[photo by Joe Madonna ] There was a brief time in my life when the Old 97s were one of my top 3 favorite bands. 19992s Fight Songs is a perfect album and one that I played on rotation an infinite number of times. I've always felt that Fight Songs was a more consistently excellent album even than Wilco's Summerteeth , also released in '99 - a more truly realized blend of alt-country and pop that both albums sought to achieve. Although Satellite Rides was a worthy follow-up, [...]

The Old 97's Rhett Miller is having some major vocal problems recently and some 97's show have had to be cancelled . Here's one of my favorites from the Blame It On Gravity album from 2008 called "Dance With Me." You can find more Old 97's songs to stream on their SoundCloud page .

Oh, my loves, it is the month of love, and I do love love! I am not one of the bitter single people; no, I relish the chance to listen to my favorite love songs and stuff myself silly with all manners of candy. So I present to you, my wonderful valentines playlist. Or it could be a galentines playlist, or a guyentines playlist. It’s always great to bro down with some love songs, right? You have to start off with the classic; God Only Knows what we’d do without the Beach Boys. Then Ben Gibbard [...]

photo by Morgen Schuler When Old 972s dropped by KEXP earlier this year, Rhett Miller took a moment to reflect on the impact KEXP has had on his life, and what a rare and precious commodity listener-powered radio is. If you share Rhett's sentiments, please make a gift of support to KEXP. We're in the midst of our New Donor Challenge, and if we can raise $15,000 from new donors by midnight on December 31st, three generous VIP Club members have agreed to double that amount—but [...]

I’ll admit it – I’ve been a bit down lately. Everyone has their off days, but I’ve been in a funk, and not even music can shake it. But I’m sure as shit going to try. Music has the ability to shape our moods. A depressing song during a breakup can cue tears; a poignant song during a time of mourning can do the same. So it makes complete sense that if we’re feeling blue, some of our favorite ditties will scoop us right out of those doldrums. I’ve got some old standby’s (Talking Heads, Old 97’s, The [...]

902s alt-country band Old 972s took a hold of the El Rey for 2 consecutive nights as the band performed its album Too Far To Care in its entirety. In celebration of the album's 15th year anniversary, the band took it as a perfect opportunity to bring out Exene Cervenka for the song "Four Leaf Clover", as it was on the original album, which made the already high-spirited crowd even wilder. But it didn't stop there! Afterwards, a mix of fan faves with the crowd occasionally yelling requests. The set ended with the song that started the night [...]

After releasing a string of well received studio album in the mid-aughts, it's been nearly four years since we've gotten a proper studio album from Calexico .
