A short but diverse schedule as we approach the holiday: ► Japan's magnificent metallurgists Dir En Grey return to SoCal behind their new release "Dum Spiro Spero." They bring their unique, pummeling rock the to the House of Blues. ► Lo-fi indie rockers the Growlers play the Observatory (fka the Galaxy Theatre) in Santa Ana, with Tomorrow's Tulips supporting. ► Old Californio and the Whiskey Saints team for a night of roots rock at the Satellite. Also: [...]

Somehow I missed the summer release date of Old Californio 's latest album, Sundrunk Angels . Well, I was on a 2 week east coast vacation, so that may be why - but, better late than never. The Pasadena, California band - led by guitarist, lead singer & songwriter Rich Dembowski - knocked me off my feet back in March 2009 when I heard "Mother Road" for the first time . They have a rootsy, harmony-filled folk-rock vibe reminiscent of other Golden State bands of years past - groups like the [...]

Old Californio - Sunburst Angels Employing the same rootsy-bluegrass-desert-vibe post- Dead psychedelia that made Westering Again so charming, Old Californio come trotting back riding bareback along that old and dusty california trail. Bringing some Byrds-ian jangle along with some banjo, lap steel, wurlitzer piano, and fine fiddle playing to their already solid musical chops, Old Californio explore some vast bluegrassy terrirtory vacated by the Grateful Dead . And they do it first rate all the way. Rich Dembowski has a way with a phrase and musical turn, [...]

Seun Kuti Plays a Free Show on Friday Sorry my post from last week didn't make it. I was on vacation and scheduled a post, but blogger crapped out on me. There are no excuses this week - great free shows almost every night. Crystal Antlers, The Soft Pack, Seun Kuti, Old Californio... Monday 7/11/11 [Pick of the Night] Crystal Antlers / Cold Showers / Clorox Girls [...]

[Missive from Buzz Bands LA's Dept. of Twang: Something to go with our whiskey, please.] Old Californio , "A Cool Place in the Light" — "Sundrunk Angels," the forthcoming new album from the L.A. quintet, encompasses classic rock and pop, psychedelia and folk/country — overall, kind of a soberer Flying Burrito Brothers. Rich Dembowski's vocals are better-suited to pop songs, but as with 20092s "Westering Again" Old Californio has songs that'll stick with you. The band celebrates the [...]

I'm a little late to the party with this one as the album was released back in the first half of 2009 - but hey good music has no sell by date. It's themes and style are evident from the title and band name (if you're prone to make assumptions like me) and a brief look at the track-list reinforces what you may expect, " Warmth of The Sun ", " Lazy Old St Gabriels ", " California Goodness " plenty of clues in the geography and imagery to work on, no need at this point to to read [...]

When The Pope and I first heard the incredible new album "Westering Again," by Old California, we were speachless. Literally. I was on the road that day and we were on speaker phone, and neither one of us could dream of the words to capture the simple, dusty beauty of that gem. Finally Pope said, "It's like you're in the mountains above the desert, and you're walking on a dusty trial, and the sun is high in the sky, and the world is expansive. Imagine that's music." Yep, I agree. So it was [...]

[So long, summer. Happy birthday, Chrissie Hynde.] Tonight's show lineup is a bit holiday-weekend-light, but two of the September residencies kicks off. Leslie & the Badgers [ featured here back in June] bring their big-hearted twang to the Echo, joined by Welldiggers Banquet and Old Californio . ... Cinematic quartet Saint Motel [more on them later today] launches its Spaceland residency, with the Jakes , Fight From Above and Giant State [...]

[Apologies for the radio silence yesterday; I think Buzz Bands' server problems have been fixed. Here are some delectable options for tonight:] That band with Jack White in it is getting all the attention, but there are several other newsbies filling my ears with hot-licked blues-rock. Band of Skulls , playing L.A. for the umpteenth time since June behind their new album "Baby Darling Doll Face Honey," is one of them, and the U.K. trio headlines Spaceland tonight ( Useless Keys open). ... Mercury Prize nominee [...]
Old Californio play the type of alt.-country that can be found on Uncle Tupelo and early Wilco records, but with a bit of a "summer of love" vibe. Their vocals and vocal-harmonies are pretty and they can really pick and play their instruments. The majority of this record is about life in the San Gabriels, pickin' and singin' on the front porch with wine and being a happy hippie in the sunshine.

Friday Five : \ ˈ frī-( ˌ )dā,-dē ˈ fīv\ : On the sixth day of every week I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five and drop a little knowledge and insight for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, sometimes there isn't. Sometimes we have guest, but most of the time it's just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments. [...]

Quality country at Spaceland, where Canadian quartet the Sadies visit; their latest album "Country Club" features classic covers and was made in collaboration with John Doe , among others. Sure, I could steer you toward the new Neil Young, Richard Swift, or Doves albums - all out this week - but this one's been on steady rotation for several weeks now, and it would be silly of me not to make this my Ick's Pick o' the week. A few weeks ago, I announced myself blown away by this band: Pasadena's Old Californio , and their new album, Westering Again - largely due to the mind-blowing infectiousness of the opening tune, "Mother Road". Well, today's the [...]

Somebody has deep pockets. The teenage L.A. rock band Acidic won an eBay auction to play a main-stage slot at Sunday's second day of the Bamboozle Left Festival at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre — with a bid of more than $13,000. The money benefits the One Love for Chi Foundation, the charity that is helping Deftones bassist Chi Cheng with his medical expenses as he recovers from a injuries he sustained in an auto accident in November. The Green Day-channeling Acidic, fronted by 16-year-old Michael Gossard, will play at 2 p.m. Sunday, about 16 hours after [...]
