Last spring Mumford & Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros embarked on the Railroad Revival Tour , which saw the three bands traverse the country together via vintage train cars. The throwback tour, which got its inspiration from the famed 1970 Festival Express tour that transported the likes of the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and The Band across Canada, began in Oakland and ended in New Orleans, stopped in six cities along the cross-country route where the bands performed at unique outdoor venues. The entire [...]
The February installment of the Feel Bad For You Mixtape is up and streaming. The FBFY mixtape has entered a new segment of it's life moving from a message board tape curated by Ms. Rockstar Aimz , of My Aimz Is True , to a mixtape put together by a collection of (mostly) like minded bloggers. You can stream it below and head over to the official FBFY mixtape web site for some dialog on why each song was selected. Track Listing: 01. Shayfer James - Title: Weight [...]

Shayfer James - Weight of the World Counterfeit Arcade (2011) Submitted By: Popa2unes Comments: Shayfer James is devilishly captivating and deliciously unusual. A man of bewitching grace, grisly humor, profound story telling, and whiskey-flavored [...]
Today, Mumford & Sons revealed the trailer for their upcoming tour documentary Big Easy Express , which contains footage from the band's 2011 Railroad Revival Tour in the U.S. alongside Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show . The tour saw the three bands living, eating, sleeping and recording onboard 15 vintage railcars, and the documentary is set to premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival. You can watch the trailer for Big Easy Express above. Mumford & Sons are currently working on the follow-up to [...]

Ano passado, o Mumford and Sons se juntou às bandas Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros e Old Crow Medicine Show para uma turnê pelos Estados Unidos, a The Railroad Revival Tour . Rolou shows em escolas, mini festivais, e claro, dentro do trem. O resultado de tudo isso [...]

During the spring of 2011, Mumford and Sons , Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros , and Old Crow Medicine Show toured the U.S. aboard a train as part of The Railroad Revival Tour . When not performing live, the bands ate, slept, and recorded music on some 15 vintage railcars. Now, as NME points out, their experience has been documented in an upcoming film entitled the Big Easy Express . According to press for the project, the film highlights the "bands' vibrant railway adventures; the high [...]
Old Crow Medicine Show : New Virginia Creeper [ purchase ] Never shying from creating modern railroad songs (and working their instruments to imitate the chugging, whistling sounds of the big, iron trains), OCMS gives us this song invoking the imagery of a relatively short-lived interstate railway between Virginia and North Carolina intertwined with some pretty heavy-handed euphemisms. The narrator in these lyrics comes across as a big-talking wooer seeking company in his plainly referenced bed. As always, OCMS does an exceptional job of recreating the plucky, easy-to-sing-along-to bluegrass style [...]

This is from Old Crow 's 2008 album Tenessee Pusher.

Emmylou Harris : Wrecking Ball [ purchase ] Gillian Welch w Old Crow Medicine Show : Wrecking Ball [ unavailable, purchase studio version ] I suspect that we are going to see this week how certain metaphors strike different songwriters. A wrecking ball is a fine example to start with. Emmylou Harris makes a pun on the word ball, and her narrator invites a boy to a dance. The danger is implied rather than stated, and the song [...]
Throwback to one of the best bluegrass songs out there

The band brings the 'Celebration' to San Diego // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

Back on April 21, confined to the tracks of a steel octopus stretching its legs across the country, three bands brought us back to the times of the goldrush and spitoons. The three biggest names in our contemporary folk music movement, Mumford and Sons , Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros , and Old Crow Medicine Show came together for a legendary performance. They called it the Railroad Revival Tour . The bands made only 6 stops on this tour traveling exclusively on vintage railroad cars. Where the tracks led, they followed, setting up a glorious festival [...]

I skipped the Top 3 post last week cause I knew I'd be out of town all weekend and not get a chance to tally the results. I also know everyone was expecting this one to be a Top 3: Lucero but since I have a natural tendency to be rather obstinate I decided to do Old Crow Medicine Show instead. I have little doubt as to what song will win this week but I am curious to see if there is any form of cohesion after it. As always, pick your favorite three [...]
Which Stage | 11 June 2011 | Full Set I am mighty fond of Old Crow Medicine Show. I could say it's the old-fashioned twang of all those strings, or maybe just my predilection for harmonicas, but if we're being honest, it's both of those things and a hell of a lot more. To me, OCMS is the music I grew up listening to, sitting by bonfires and eating frog legs (yes, it's true-- I'm the one writer who just might be able to give Mel a run for her country money), but a [...]
As the dust settles - and by all accounts there was a lot of it - and the last of the cars pull out of the parking lots from the tenth installment of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival , we thought we'd take a look at a couple of the big stories that dominated the coverage of what went down in Manchester over the last four days. While hip-hop acts have always been a part of the fest dating back to year one with Jurassic 5, this was the year that had many declaring that the genre finally [...]

By Jon Stone I've been thinking about late-night sets all day. Bonnaroo is famous for them, but seriously, I don't see how people manage. Like tonight, there's some really cool stuff going on at, like, two and three in the morning. I'm convinced that only the very young, the completely wasted, and those who can sleep somewhere with air conditioning stay out all night. Which is really too bad. I would have loved to see Ratatat last night but they went on at three. On the other hand, Weezy had us all up that late anyway. [...]
