Next month will be my first time seeing Old Crow Medicine Show despite being my second time buying a ticket to see them. A few years ago, they came to Northampton, MA but I got stuck late a t work and never got to go. So, between that failed experience and another solid album from the finest bluegrass band going today, I was pretty excited when I saw Higher Ground had booked them for June 26th . If you aren't familiar with the boys from Nashville and their revitalized Appalachian sounds, they knock [...]

"Summer was gone and the heat died down/ And autumn reached for her golden crown/ I looked behind as I heard a sigh/But this was the time of no reply" Last night I got a great fortune: " Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening all at once. " I don't know if it's the fact that [...]
I'm currently praising every deity imaginable that this hellacious week of tests, midterms, and papers has finally passed. I feel like a celebration is in store, but it's not five o'clock yet so I'm gonna throw together a bunch of odds and ends that have made me chuckle or put me in a buoyant mood. Unleash your inner dork! I'm a 360 kinda guy, the only product to which Microsoft holds the key to my heart for, so when the whole PS3 vs. 360 war started I was quick to side with the "good [...]

The rain stopped as dusk approached after a good couple hours of black skies, heavy rains, thunder, and me sitting in the office cussin' up a whole other storm all together. The skies were still threatening and a heavy fog was rolling in as I left St. Pete for Skipper's . Old Crow came to Tampa for the first time ever and we welcomed them with a sell-out crowd that showed up despite the weather. This was billed as "An Evening with Old Crow Medicine Show" and as I'm sure plenty of you know, that means the band is [...]

GREAT JOB TAMPA! Man,*this* is how we get bands to venture down this deep into Florida. I expected a descent crowd but not a sell-out. See y'all tomorrow. O.C.M.S. - Don't Ride That Horse

Back in December I found out Old Crow was going to venture down into my neck of the woods, and made a slightly obscene post about it . Needless to say, my excitement has only grown in the weeks following the announcement. So I threw the new Old Crow CD "Big Iron World" into my CD player a few weeks ago to help pass the time. It has barely left my CD player since and never for longer than 2 days. This ever deepening love of the CD got me to wondering what I had written about [...]
When I compiled this top twenty list (for Bruce and Heather's 12 X 12 post), I did knocked it out in a hurry, at the end of November. If I could go back now, I would make some changes. The Format would crack the top ten. Damien Rice would move up in numbers. Regina would probably come in second. Greg and Amos would switch seats. Brett Dennen would be voted off the island and replaced by Sonya Kitchell. But it is what it is and hindsight is twenty twenty. No matter how [...]

Just because NewsCorp decided to pull OJ's TV special from the air and his confession book from the shelves doesn't mean we have to. And since we made arrangements before any of this hubbub began, we've decided to stab stick with our original holiday plans. With the staff of YuppiePunk World HQ officially off this week, the site will be left in the bloody capable hands of Mr. Simpson, who will be our Turkey Week murderer blogger. We figured it'd be better than simply leaving it unattended. Besides, what [...]

Old Crow plays old time music like a punk band. If you ever get a chance to see these five guys, DO IT. And if you’re lady, according to my wife, they are HOT!!!. Cocaine Habit God’s Got It James River Blues Wagon Wheel Tell It To Me Get more Crow @ The Hype Machine Show Details [...]

I’ve never made a mix that tried to capture the feeling of Autumn, my favorite season. Until now! Just in time for tomorrow's equinox. I tried to use songs that either have fall lyrics, sound like fall, or were I purchased in the fall. Hope you enjoy. 1. Smashing Pumpkins ~ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (I like to start with instrumentals and this is a good one off a great double album released in October 1995) 2. [...]

As I was getting ready to write this post, I decided to see what I had written about Old Crow Medicine Show in earlier posts. And you know what? Holy crap. I've been writing this rag for over a year and completely failed to write about my favorite bluegrass band. What an oversight. Well, for anyone unfamiliar with Old Crow Medicine Show, they are a sextet out of Nashville playing a brand of old-time bluegrass. But they aren't a bunch of old guys. They're a bunch of young guys with [...]

I'm nearly all recovered from the ridiculous weekend I had in Chicago with Devin and my fellow Straights. We all drank too much and hung out and dressed in drag and raised some money for the cause, you got me? At any rate, these guys came up on multiple occassions so for everyone's benefit I'll post them. The first album that was released nationally from these boys came out on the same day as Kanye West's The College Dropout. I remember my roommate and good friend Bill and I went to Tower Records at midnight on [...]

In House #1699 : Scott H. Biram in Jackson Hole; New Old Crow Medicine Show S hortly after being hit head-on by an 18-wheeler at 75 mph around three years ago, Scott H. Biram , the self-accused Dirty Old One Man Band, took to a stage in Austin, TX sporting an I.V. and several broken bones. That, perhaps, is Biram in a nutshell and more or less all you need to know if you've never heard his music. [...]
I'm not a huge reader of Paste Magazine but did enjoy the September issue and will most likely add the magazine to my reading list now. As most of the new magazines do these days, the September Paste issue included a CD sampler. It was good exposure to some new bands and I have picked the ones I liked best. Let me know what you think and like the most in the comment section. mp3 Ghostriders

For me, this week brings a return to teaching full-time, which is kind of a drag, but the fact that Old Crow Medicine Show's Big Iron World is being released tomorrow will do a lot to make up for having to kiss my summer goodbye. You can actually purchase Big Iron World right now via itunes, or you can even stream the entire album for free over at CMT. Just click here . I thought I'd do a post today previewing two of the songs that they've included on the CD.. [...]

"Down Home Girl" by THE COASTERS: I had no idea when I started putting this post together that Tuwa's Shanty had their own post going about the Alvin Robinson version of this song. His post pretty much nails everything I love about this song, too, so you might as well head over there to download their track. The first time I ever heard any rendition of this Butler/Leiber song was on THE ROLLING STONES' cover-filled Now LP. The Stones' version is sexy, but The Coasters just lay the mack down on this mother. (BONUS TRACK: [...]
Old Crow Medicine Show -- Down Home Girl Old Crow Medicine Show -- Wagon Wheel At Tuwa's suggestion, here's a cover of Down Home Girl by one of my favorite oldtime country bands. Old Crow Medicine Show was a group of street musicians who were discovered by Doc Watson's daughter playing in front of a drugstore. That led to a gig on the plaza in front of the Grand Ole Opry, and the rest could be scripted by any cheap Hollywood screenwriter. Allmusic describes [...]
