David Beeman's Old Lights (Saint Louis) recently made a stop in West Michigan - knocking out a few shows in the process. He and his fellow members(including Benjamin Riley ) also freed up some time to swing by the Stone House to record a Halfway House Session. Color us impressed. Currently - Old Lights is gearing up to record a brand spanking new EP in Nashville with David Vandervelde producing. Stay tuned for details. For now - enjoy the hell outta this session. Wait, weren't we just here? Like, in 2009? As I hinted at in last year's TDoL year-end extravaganza , making these lists is always a tug-of-war between what feels good and what actually is good. But if it makes you feel good, it must be good ... right? So here's the process: I frantically assemble my list. Move things around. Re-listen to records. Cut one here; add another there. I didn't know what to think when I first heard Old Light 's debut LP The Dirty Future . It's got hefty four-part harmonies throughout. Pop hooks. The occasional stoner riff. Autoharp (36 strings = six guitars). It's hard to pin down ... it's just good. As Thee Oh Sees madman John Dwyer succinctly puts it: "It's like Crosby, Stills & Nash if they didn't suck!" The Dirty Future has been kicking around these parts since the band sold out their record-release show in early October. The album is now available to you, [...]

This past week I've been getting into Old Lights pretty heavily. This is David Beeman's latest project, who's previously drummed for David Vandervelde and worked as a sound engineer for Cold War Kids, among other bands. Old Lights - Furthest From The Tree For all of you that have been waiting for the Kode9 DJ Kicks album, here's one you'll be interested in. Martyn 's "You Don't Wash" was dropped as a freebie. It's on you to go get yourself the [...]

I got an email the other day from David Beeman, mastermind behind the folk-pop quintet Old Lights. He was very pleased and very eager to share with us the brand new video by Cody Stokes for "Losing My Mind," off their latest, Every Night Begins The Same (click to buy on iTunes). I really enjoyed [...]
