THE FIVE STAIRSTEPS :: SUNDAY MUSIC

THE FIVE STAIRSTEPS :: SUNDAY MUSIC As you already know from reading this Blog, Sunday is Old Soul day around my house. Playing classic's on this day always reminds of being a kid. My dad was a huge Stairsteps fan and I recall hearing their LP's 24/7. The Group paved the way for the Jackson Five. Timing in live is everything. The Jackson Five went on to national and international fame and the Five Stair Steps went on to obscurity, but at least they are on Wikipedia. The [...]

[Introducing] – Old Soul

[Introducing] – Old Soul Tweet Old Soul fall into that genre that The Civil Wars made famous in 2011, the category of country-jazz-pop that toes the line of pop, but still maintains musically integrity. Read: unlike pop, it doesn't suck, it just contains the same likeability and sugary-sweetness that many pop acts rely on solely. True to their name, however, the debut self-titled album includes old world intricacies and soulfully styled vocals that sound as though they were carried in by [...]

REVIEW: Old Soul - Old Soul [LP]

REVIEW: Old Soul - Old Soul [LP] Contributed by Trevor Meyer Still swimming in nostalgia from the return trip to California, I took a few listens to Old Soul's self-titled 2011 release. The album features a nice collection of folk tunes and blends elements of soul and pastoral ambience. My favorite tracks are the waltzy, "People Are Talking" and the dynamic "Red & Gold," a track that draws parallels to older Coldplay and A.A. Bondy. Also, "Caught A Train" is a well-knit piece woven together by a fusion of soul, acoustic, [...]

[MP3] Old Soul – "Blackbird Calling"

[MP3] Old Soul – "Blackbird Calling" dreaming of something, something no one knows ♫ Old Soul - Blackbird Calling It's always pleasant when you are surprised by a band. Old Soul caught me off guard, and the description of the making of their debut album was just too good to pass on sharing: We quit our jobs, fired up the wood stove and hunkered down for a month to make our debut album. Think lazy folk rock along the lines of Vetiver, A.A. Bondy, and M. Ward. Now [...]

Old Soul – Seven Suns

Old Soul – Seven Suns Tweet This has a definite 'A Man Called Sun' era Verve feel to it, but given that that particular song was released on a EP that is now 19 years old let's instead celebrate the new boys (and girl) in town. They be a threesome from Maine called Old Soul who have just released their debut album that is available for free download from their bandcamp. And an impressive listen it is too, one that recalls early Gomez ('Bring It On' majesty) [...]

THE INCREDIBLES

THE INCREDIBLES This records by "The Incredibles" is very special to me. The original pressing belonged to my pops, who's had this in his collection since a teen. A few years ago I was fortunate to inherit POP"s 45 collection, I guess he felt I was ready. Fourty years in the family. That's the beauty about old soul music, enjoying the same tunes your parents grew up on. To me, this style of music is timeless. THE INCREDIBLES - I'LL MAKE IT EASY

Goodbye Lydia Ooghe

Goodbye Lydia Ooghe Songbird Lydia Ooghe came out of nowhere last year and delivered "Love That Glow," an incredible album full of her singsong voice and luscious melodies. The album even made my best albums of 2010 list . Richmond had a musical gem in the form of Lydia. Unfortunately, like all good things, Lydia Ooghe will be leaving Richmond to pursue her dreams. She is moving to LA and while it's definitely sad to see her go, she will do great things out there. Plus, you know there will be a great welcome [...]

The Daily Choice: Magic Leaves - Pink Trees

Peter Arensdorf, the bassist for Magic Leaves, is a good friend of mine. Lets just get that out of the way. Magic Leaves are carving out a pretty interesting little path for themselves. The previously DCed "Old Soul" was an impressive, if not slightly standard, psych-rock freak-out session. Pulsing bass, fuzzed out guitars, clouds of throbbing [...]

The Daily Choice: Magic Leaves - Old Soul

First things first: the bassist, one Pete Arensdorf is a near and dear friend of mine and in accordance with the rituals of transparency I must admit this to you. That said if I had audibly stumbled across Magic Leaves by chance I would certainly be thrusting it upon you in a similarly persistent fashion. [...]

THE EPSILONS

THE EPSILONS The Epsilons formed as teenagers in Philadelphia, PA, an early member was a guy name Roame, who has carved a successful career playing congas and singing with Maze. The group got a huge break via a two-year tour with Otis Redding; Arthur Conley was also a member of the troupe, his smash "Sweet Soul Music," featured the Epsilons, uncredited, on backing vocals. The quintet now consisted of John Whitehead(Roame's cousin), Gene McFadden, Allen Beatty, Lloyd Parks, and James Knight. Parks cut his teeth with the Emanons, whose recordings included "One Heart," on Phila of Soul Records in 1968. [...]
