Don't look now, but Christmas is almost upon us, and what better was to celebrate than with the 2010 version of Christmas at the Oldfolks Home ! If you were a hill regular at this time last year, you'll remember that Ricardo & Shaun from Winnipeg's Oldfolks Home invited us to participate in an ambitious Xmas treat where they released a song a week, complete with custom artwork, in the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas. The results were quite wonderful, and [...]

Newer: Crocodiles & Dum Dum Girls - Merry Christmas, Baby (Please Don't...

As a final little treat before the holiday hits us, how about the final installment of the Oldfolks Home Christmas/Holiday project. Shaun and Ricardo gave us four tracks and each had custom artwork. All they asked from you was to listen. not a bad deal if you ask me. Anyway, here's the last one, White Christmas . Better than us try to tell you how the duo feels, this gracious thank you more than does the job! Merry Christmas and happy holiday to all: This will be this year's final [...]

Week Three of Christmas at the Oldfolks Home . This week it's a, dare I say, sensual sax-y boy take on Frosty the Snowman . The duo continues to show that the box you try to force the Oldfolks Home into aint quite big enough... well that and they will knee you in the ribs if need be. Frosty the Snowman Frosty the Snowman, is a jolly, merry song, Until he gets sick of the children, And the cop's pull him over for being different, And then he takes out someone's eye with his carrot [...]

Winnipeg based act Oldfolks Home is releasing one free Christmas song every week in December. Each song will include artwork by artists such as Julie Fader, Howie Tsui, Garland Lam, and Kerri-Lynn Reeves. Some background on the idea behind the program is below On one sunny summer afternoon, Oldfolks Home began recording a cover of "White Christmas" for an upcoming compilation. Starting with a drum beat, the song quickly took shape as an up-beat, less traditional incarnation of the holiday standard. The process of [...]

Week two of Oldfolks Home holiday cheer. Week one was a look back at the joy of family, and naturally week two is a look at most people's favorite part of the holidays - FOOD. Honestly, I never expected the Winnipeg duo to cover a Hawksley tune, but the effort is much appreciated. So is the collage of color courtesy of Julie Fader. So as always, deck the halls. It's Christmas time in Hollis herohill. Almost A Full Moon Since I had picked all the other [...]

Its here! The 2009 Music Playlist for Christmas! Now I wish I could take credit for this awesome compilation of chill songs but it was really the guys from Indiecater Records that made this possible! After their success with their first Christmas album last year, they decided to step it up a notch and improve their selection for 2009. Most of the songs on this collection were written especially for the occasion and even includes bands we had previously covered like Adam and Darcie You can stream the songs [...]

We've long been a fan of Ricardo of Oldfolks Home fame. We crossed paths about five times in three nights at this year's HPX, and we championed his debut LP way back in the day. He's a stand up guy that gets us in a good mood, so why wouldn't we jump at the chance to debut his Christmas song project? For the next four weeks, tune into the hill to get a sneak preview of his 4 holiday treats, each with a unique story and cover art from a different Canadian artist. It's never too [...]

The fine folks at BETTER SWIMMERS have put together a serious of shows that should have the Winnipeg indie crowd donning their finest for weeks. You can check out the full line up over at the POP! ET CETERA site. While you're there, you might as well grab the sampler pictured above. The kickoff party is tonight at the Lo . (Wish I could make it.) I'm looking forward to (finally!) seeing LEBEATO next week. [...]

Now that the countdown for HPX '09 is on, we've been trying to pit our magical random question machine against as many of this year's performers as possible in the hopes that hilarity and/or insight would ensue. So who's our latest contestant? Why it's Ricardo Lopez of Winnipeg's Oldfolks Home . Ricardo and OFH is a natural choice for us, considering he's been featured on our Manitoba mixtape , done a fantastic take on a BSS song for our sporadic [...]

I'm ( Mikey MMMuscles aka Mike B ) heading out West (Canaduhhh) with my pal Oldfolks Home in about a week - we're doing a little band/DJ tour based around our show at the Sled Island festival in Calgary. Check out the dates below as well as a chill promo mix I put together for the occasion. **We've been having some trouble securing Vancouver/area dates, so if anyone reading might be able to help out (guest DJ set or an OFH performance) with [...]

Wow. This one took forever and a day to finish, but the end results are pretty stellar. We had some delays on songs, a redesign of the cover art (who knew that Winnipeg was lousy with ' Keeping it Riel ' shirts and our idea wasn't original) and general half assedry on our side. Luckily, by waiting we got some absolute treats for you guys: A Ruby Jean & the Thoughtful Bees remix of I Hate Dell by Oldfolks Home. [...]

Hailing from Winnipeg, Oldfolks Home is the project of Ricardo Lopez. Where their band name incites more a folk band name, Lopez actually creates electro music that may parallel Ratatat but with the use of vocals. We Are the Feeding Line was initially released in 2007 (I think) to some fanfare but for whatever reason that never materialized into anything substantial. It faced a re-release on October 9 while Oldfolks Home went on a mini-tour around Canada. I can't quite put my finger on why I was initially interested in Oldfolks Home [...]
Who : Oldfolks Home from Winnipeg. What : What's the sweetest sounding song about hating a computer company you've ever heard? Might be the one below from Winnipeg's Oldfolks Home . The artist name for Ricardo Lopez-Aguilar, a producer, sound-engineer and band member of Boats . The song is off his debut We Are The Feeding Line , which so far sounds like the guys from Air joining Stars hanging out with the Postal Service . Quite nice. He's on [...]
Twin Cities: - Haley Bonar and Brother Ali both sat in on Radio K recently, performing short studio sets in support of the station's 15th Anniversary. Bonar's set covered "Bad for You," "Big Star," "Tiger Boy," and her version of Tom Petty's "Yer So Bad." Brother Ali's set included a few new songs including "Good Lord" and "Baby Don't Go," as well as a few older tracks "The Puzzle" and "Philistine David." It's been far too long since we asked any of the artists we cover for free shit. Word on the Beat was a way for us to get artists talking about artists that influence their music (and get cool content for the hill), but we kind of forgot about it for way too long. Long story short - it's back and for any of you bored musicians, all submissions are welcome. When I was talking to Ricardo from Oldfolks Home , he mentioned he had new gear he wanted to try out, so I politely [...]

myspace Well, through the magic of the Internet, I have another terrific record from the good people of Manitoba. After my quick post on Boats , I was sent the CD from Oldfolks Home and the tie ins started coming to light. First, Ricardo Lopez – the brains behind the project – is also a member of Boats. Not enough? Well, how about the fact one of the tracks on the record features a terrific duet with Halifax's own (and herohill championed), Rebekah Higgs . Still not [...]
