Elf Power - A Tired Army This elaborately crafted song belongs to In A Cave , the ninth and newest album from Elf Power, a group of lo-fi experimentalists from Athens, Georgia. Having been together for 14 years, Elf Power have outlasted some of the more well-known artists also a part of indie collective Elephant 6 (Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel) and although this album sees them with a somewhat more straightforward sound, it still has that quintessential lysergic edge. [...]

From Bubble Gum To Sky Genre: Indie / Pop / Soul From: Brooklyn and Oakland, New York, United States Mario Hernandez is the irresistible force behind the wierdly monickored From Bubblegum To Sky and a one man summer pop sensation to boot. On his third album [...]
Musikkah Day Six What is this Musikkah you speak of? [ Post ] I can very much say that Americanada is one of my favorite mixes, and chances are is that it's because I got to probe the minds of some of my favorite bloggers for it. It's my first collaborative mix, and I intend on doing something like this again very soon. I've had hopes of doing a European take to battle this mix for months now...maybe the time [...]
Bobb Trimble (1982) Harvest of Dreams There is nobody quite like Bobb Trimble in the world of rock n roll. Many more famous and wealthier musicians ( Thurston Moore is one I can think of) have praised his unique body of work. Trimble released two great underappreciated records in the early 80's (private press - real lo-fi). His vision is very deep, personal, and absolutely original with a strong outsider, late night feel (think brooding dark mind trips). His vocals are like [...]

Yesssss. I'm back! I have a new host, and a new series: Autumn Songs. However first on the host: I'm hoping minorcrisis gets resolved soon and this switch is only temporary. The bandwidth minor crisis allowed far exceeded that of my replacement, filefreak. Filefreak allows me 500 megs of traffic a day, and when taken in account about 4 or 5 megs per song, and the amount of downloads, I likely won't last a whole day. Each entry I do gets an average of about 200 hits, with a range from maybe 25 to 2,500. This could [...]

Vetiver / All photos by David Greenwald Ah, Arthurfest . The second day was the one I was really excited about, thanks to the presence of the Olivia Tremor Control's reunion tour, and I wasn't disappointed. A "surprise" appearance by Devendra Banhart was also a pretty great moment, and of course Spoon rocked their shit like Federer on Centre Court. Vetiver Spoon, [...]

Photo credit: a nameless yeast One picture, two EP-length, Lambchop-inspired playlists. What is he trying to say? You decide which one you think fits best. "I'm a Moody Fucker" Obviously the f-word is what captures the eye initially. It reminded me of the excellent Moody Fucker song by Lambchop and the guy in the picture certainly looks a bit grumpy. This is the more pessimistic list that only looks at the message that he is trying to express. [...]
All photos by David Greenwald There are few bands as great as the Olivia Tremor Control . I got really into them right around the time they briefly reformed, and luckily they fell into my concert-going lap. I wish they'd gotten to play a headlining set at Arthurfest, but getting to see their brand of Beach Boys-soaked psych-pop in action was pretty incredible. [...]

Shortly before The Olivia Tremor Control released Black Foliage Animation Music Volume 1 (still...waiting...for volume 2...), they released a teaser single on Flydaddy for Hideaway . Back in 2000 or so...or was it Christmas 1999?...my brother-in-law gave me this single as a present. I remember playing it for my mother and she said, "They sound kind of like the Beach Boys ." Not a big coincidence, there, as Brian Wilson (and what should have been Smile , had Wilson finished it in the 60's) was a strong influence [...]

Ah, North America - a continent hogged by only three countries, two of which are Canada and the United States of America. Together, they form a union which should have been formalized decades ago. Together, they form a union I like to call Americanada, and it would have many things to be proud of. At least, musically, it would have many things to be proud of. You see, on the way home from a rather festive holiday party, Scandimania! was put on. Amongst the Swedish tunage streaming out of the speakers, it was remarked by [...]
Happy Xmas to you, Fabulists. To my fellow Jews: I hope you enjoy your chinese food and movies as much as I will. Enjoy these songs (which I give to you, despite normally being vehemently opposed to all music Christmas) and your day. Harvey Danger - Sometimes You Have To Work On Christmas (Sometimes) The Walkmen - No Christmas While I'm Talking Jonathan Coulton - Podsafe Christmas Song The Olivia Tremor Control - Christmas With William S [...]
In 1997 the then-youngish label of Kindercore Records, operating out of Athens, GA, put out a compilation called Christmas in Stereo. It featured some hip bands like The Olivia Tremor Control and The Mendoza Line , and some more obscure ones, just getting started, like... Summer Hymns and of Montreal . It was a top seller and apparently a lot of fun to compile, so two years later, as the label started to gather more fans and started to put together a rather brilliant lineup, they put out a sequel to [...]

Vanaqua, 12 Nov 2006 Dear Friends, I had intended to post something substantial tonight, but it is not to be. While I type, my head is literally nodding and lurching as I fight off sleep. I am drifting along the liminal shallows between the sands of consciousness and the deep of slumber, no longer certain whether the fantastical creatures I am seeing are real or surreal. Alas, I must away. A polychromatic hyrax in a coracle is rowing me out [...]

In 1999 I was browsing a record store in Salt Lake City, delighting in different Elephant 6 finds--it was clear someone working the store was a fan--like the Elf Power Come On EP and Of Montreal 's The Bird Who Continues to Eat the Rabbit's Flower . But I really struck the gold mine when I looked up Olivia Tremor Control . Next to the Dusk at Cubist Castle bonus " Explanations " CD, which I quickly tossed in the bag, was a completely odd-looking release with no title on the [...]

Mixtape Project is now back. We're now on tracks nine and ten. It's been a while since the last Mixtape Project post, but what with school and hosting and bandwidth issues, we hit a rough spot there for a week or two, or three. But who's counting? Anyway, no more time to waste, I'm kinda hungry and I believe there's some midnight cereal waiting for me in the kitchen. 9. [MP3]: The Olivia Tremor Control :: Marking Time Now I wouldn't quite consider this [...]

The Jumping Fences EP by Olivia Tremor Control was released on vinyl and on CD, and I've ripped these tracks from the vinyl, so you can probably find better-quality versions out there. Still, I think these sound pretty good. A gatefold 12", Jumping Fences contained the title track (from Dusk at Cubist Castle ), and three instrumentals, with the last, "Green Typewriters (Outer Themes and Explorations)" taking up the whole of Side B. In addition to Bill Doss, Peter Erchick, John Fernandes, Eric Harris, and Will Cullen Hart, these tracks [...]
As always, a combination of new and old to help smooth out the bumps and annoying little air bubbles (try not to let them become aneurysms). More old this time. I feel like a cat stuck in a tall tree, or maybe it's just the cat stuck in the tall ...
Jeff Mangum, born in 1970 in Louisiana, is the founder and main lyricist and songwriter of what was the band Neutral Milk Hotel (1989-1998). Neutral Milk Hotel was a highly influential indie rock band who released two full-length albums, On Avery Island (1996) and the epic In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998). He was also one of the founding members of The Elephant Six Collective, along with three of his childhood friends Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart, and Robert Schneider. The Elephant Six Collective spawned many notable independent bands, including The Apples [...]
