Last night was a great night for me personally. Know why that is? Cause I was not at home watching the Olympics like all the other people out there that feel the need to watch this giant commercial event. About 70% of people I know last the night away becoming NBC-ombies! Now Its great that all these athlethes across the world go out and compete for there "country". At one time in life that meant something I guess. But now its just a huge poster board for corperate advertisement. ANd not to mention that they are held and are providing [...]
Easily one of the greatest sports moments I've ever witnessed. I don't know about everyone else, but (for me) it was a giant leap off the sofa and invigorating victory yell that followed USA's out-touching of the "supposed to crush us" Frenchies! What a comeback, what a world record, what a fine day to live in the USA! [MP3] The New Pornographers - Ballad Of A Comeback Kid
by Mark Spitz Hey guys. It's me. I'm sure you're all in Olympec fever with the Bayjing game goin' on and all, and you're all gonna have new Olympec heroes and stuff now, but seriously. Let's not get crazy here. Let's not forget about Mark Spitz. I'll set the scene: 1972. Munik, Germaney. A pool. Me swimming like crazy. 100-Meter Freestyle, BOOM! Gold medal. 100-Meter Butterfly, BOOM! Gold medal. 200-Meter Freestyle, BOOM! Gold medal. And…wait for it…200-Meter Butterfly…BOOM! Gold medal! Seven events, seven world records! And I looked good doin' all of it. So seriously guys. [...]

Shouts to Vectorpusher for posting this link over on DOA; if you guys didn't catch the ceremony on TV, you missed a thing of beauty.
So tonight the olympics begins, which may or may not be your thing, but i saw this video today and realized that there is a part of the olympics that you don't see, the people who come in last place.. or barely make it, or something else.. like in this video. This video starts off pretty normal, a swimming competition in the Sydney Olympics, and by the end it's like an SNL sketch. There are 3 swimmers to qualify for the next round, 2 of them false start.. disqualifying them.. so it leaves the one Eric 'The Eel' Moussambani [...]
Who else is pumped? I mean, the things come once every four years, you know they're good But really, I'm pretty excited about the Olympics: something about them has always fascinated me. They're not just the biggest sporting event in the world, they're also a political event, ya see, and this year's olympics (in case you live under a metaphorical rock) are being held in China, which should make for some interesting times to say the least. Yay America. [mp3] Broken Social Scene - Canada Vs. America [mp3] [...]

I am not a huge fan of the Olympics by any means, but these images really caught my eye. As we all know, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, possibly the most controversial in living history, are now underway. Whatever your views on China and these games are, you can't deny the beauty in the following set of photos and the enormity of the opening ceremony. The photography is simply stunning. [...]

Today the Olympics kick off in Beijing at 8:08:08pm on 08/08/08. You can bet it's Chinese wedding day central as well since 8's are lucky in Chinese culture-- the more the better. I myself am flying back to Edmonton today to attend a family wedding, not so coincidentally missing the wedding of a friend too. I imagine lots of Chinese will also be buying lottery tickets today, though they just missed the Wednesday 6/49 jackpot of $45 million dollars, the 2nd largest jackpot in Canadian lottery history to be split by the staff of a car dealership [...]
88 drums w/ gang gang dance & more tonite at 8:08

You know how sometimes you can get a completely inappropriate song stuck in your head? Well, I keep humming Devendra Banhart's "Chinese Children as we watch the opening ceremonies in Beijing and there's probably something vaguely racist about that song in this particular context. Oh, good some Chinese opera, that'll get rid of Devendra. My impression of the opening ceremonies so far - very red, far too much singing but technologically fantastic. One other tip for the Chinese Olympic Committee, if you want don't want to be thought of as authoritarian, probably best to [...]
T he Olympics are about to start in 2hours (roughly) and all the world's attention will switch to Beijing. Hopefully NBC won't do their usual lame coverage of the event, as these will be the most important Olympics in decades...for obvious reasons which we shouldn't really get into in a mediocre blog like this one. In any case I'm gonna turn on my Olympic spirit, grab some Gatorade and enjoy the games...you should too. Jackie...where did you leave Chris Tucker?

If Olympic subplots of human rights violations and superhuman quests for eight gold medals haven't really been doing it for you, perhaps you'd rather peruse the torrent of self-reflexive, media-focused stories polluting newswires like smog on the Beijing skyline. Welcome to the "Metalympics." Here you'll find some of the following topics of varying urgency and importance: NBC is doing an admirable job in expanding its Olympic coverage, NBC will undoubtedly do a [...]

The Hong King Lego Users Group recreated the city of Bejing in under 100 hours. The National Aquatics Center is in the center. Other photos of Lego venues can be seen here . The good thing about this is there is no smog. [ via ]
In honor of the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Nike has released yet another plethora of money makin' joints. As shown above, the shoe has been released in black, red, and blue colorways, as well two other yellow and a green colorways. The shoe is made up entirely of patent leather, coupled with a quilted embroidery pattern. You can find these available now at Millennium shoes , and some other top retailers within the week. Good tidings. More breakfast after the jump .
The title of this post may be a little dramatic, but the news is actually quite silly. Read on and have a chuckle. With just a week to go before the opening ceremonies for the Bejing Olympics, an innocent little song by The Kooks has somehow led to an international controversy. Two members of Britain's Olympic sailing [...]
It's a strange device, Gordon Smart's moral compass. Happy to run long-lens shots of women with their breasts on display, and to discuss women's "crackers" and "bangers", all of a sudden Gordon has a fit of the vapours when discussing a ban on the name chosen by British sailors for their Olympic yacht: Big t**s spark an Olympic row Poor Gordon seems to be outraged at the ban on naming a boat after a Kooks song, railing at the organisers: But their latest choice, Jackie Big T**s — a song from Inside [...]
The Soho store Opening Ceremony recently teamed up with Nike to create this beautiful Olympic Air Max 1 pack, in honor of this years Olympic games. On August 8th, the store will open up a 24 hour athletic themed souvenir shop where they will be sold, among various other limited edition pieces of jewelry and accessories. To my local homeboy, this might actually be the sneaker that gets the attention of the girl that you have been stalking for the past two months. And by the way, we at wwb don't at all condone any type of stalking [...]

I've been on a walking tour around west London, taking in the sites and stories of London's 1908 Olympics. They were held in a stadium at White City, which was demolished in the 80s (the BBC are on the site now), but memories of the Olympics remain, such as this mural. The best story came from the marathon. Starting at Windsor Castle, it wound through north and west London. Princess Mary at Windsor Castle asked that it start at the east wing - 'so the children [...]
