British Sea Power once wasted elegiac stanzas on a rapport destined to be 'ended on an oily stage'. However, many wonderful musical happenings of a more positive nature have coincidentally occurred over the course of the past twelve months on stages small and large; sticky and pristine; smooth, sweaty, and indeed oily (for which see that of Tivoli de Helling above). Here's the deal: we'll run through our most enjoyable for reasons varied (and in some cases pretty well unknown), and you can reminisce or wish you'd been there in a more composed state of mind or rejoice in the [...]
"Leh Jani" by Syrian superstar Omar Souleyman is the first release from the new label Sham Palace . The label was started by Mark Gergis, who also works with the renowned world music label Sublime Frequencies . "Leh Jani", originally a Syrian cassette only title, is the fourth domestic release from Souleyman, who according to his site's discography has released over 600 live and studio recordings since 1996. From the label: "First release on Sham Palace, a new label from key Sublime Frequencies conspirator Mark Gergis. "Leh Jani" - the legendary [...]
When it comes to mashups, three seems to be the magic number. Two is too lonely; too easy, too. And four or more, well, now that's a crowd more suited for Girl Talk co-eds . Like any mélange à trois worth its constituents, what first reads as disparate – hip-hop, Hopelandic and Al-Hasakah – ends up sounding definitive, as if it's always been that way. Again, there are three reasons. First, the Syrian Souleyman had already recorded three re-mixes for Ms. Guðmundsdóttir's Biophili a, all found on the second disc of her "Crystalline Series." (Thus, the ampersand here.) Secondly, no one right now [...]
Lean your head out of a nearby window and you can probably hear the low thrum of buzz that's already surrounding this release, a collaborative effort between mysterious doom monger Burial and Brit genre hoppers Massive Attack . Vocals wander atop staccato samples, shrieks, and shuffling as Four Walls, picked up from the chopping room floor and dusted down, effortlessly betters anything contained within Heligoland, including the heartfelt throb of the Albarn-featuring Saturday Come Slow. Were Omar Souleyman's chief melody maker to soundtrack Cirque du Soleil, it still probably wouldn't sound anywhere near this unique... The flipside [...]
A sense of the subdued lingers come Sunday and it's not until Omar Souleyman teases the fragile from the throes of both slumber and splintering headache on the Main Stage that many beings are encountered. Like a snake charmer beguiling a pit of serpents with processed Korg frenetics, his wearied disciples slowly but surely cross the mudded planes of Robin Hill Country Park, dressed in suriyahs and tea towels, to raise their slithering arms towards Souleyman. Introduced by a stern translator in suit and shades, Souleyman eventually emerges, clenches his microphone between arm and torso, and begins to [...]
The lineup for Austin's Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 just got all that more fun ridiculous with the additions of Spoon (in what will be their only 2011 performance), Black Lips, Omar Souleyman, Cannibal Corpse, and Sergio 'Sexy Sax Man' Flores. They join an absolutely stacked bill that already included Slayer, Passion Pit, Public Enemy, Danzig Legacy, The Damned, Odd Future, Major Lazer, Lykke Li, and Hot Snakes. Here's what it looks like in poster form: Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 goes down from [...]
Znów zaczynam bez wstępniakowego wodzirejstwa i znów (znów?) posługuję się bardzo prostym modelem, którego w swoich "Listach z podróży" użył Karel Čapek. Syrian pop producer, Omar Souleyman , takes three tracks off Bjork's upcoming album to create his very own, Crystalline Series . Words cannot even explain how excited I am for this album, and when this remix was heard, I became even more ecstatic. Souleyman definitely did some genius work on all three of her tracks but his 'Crystalline' remix is by all means has come to be my favorite. It's a groovy middle eastern belly-dancing cadence that just never seems to end. So intricately poppy and can potentially get people dancing on the dancefloor [...]
