The British synthesizer veterans do their best to sabotage their own comeback album. Over the past few years, OMD have really set the table for a smashing comeback. First came the well-received reunion shows, featuring the band's "classic" four-piece lineup performing their classic material. Then came the concerts with symphony orchestras and an art installation with famed graphic designer Peter Saville. Throughout all this, the band realized their music, particularly their more experimental early '80s material, had undergone a critical revival. In their native UK especially, the lasting...

It's been raining for three days here in G-Vegas. This isn't "Seattle spittin' rain for days" kind of rain either. It's the monsoon/rainy season in the South Pacific kind of rain. Oh, I'm friggin' miserable. So is this song... perfect for today: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Crush [mp3] Cheer up!

I'm back from holiday and from the first underwater encounter with these guys here: It was a short, but nonetheless impressive moment when five of these dolphins swam right between my dad and me, and it definitely was the highlight our dives. You sometimes just have to be on the right side at the right time! Speaking of The Right Side : just how cool is that new song by 802s heroes [...]
It's another big, big week for new releases from some of our favorite indie bands and artists, including LA's lo-fi, experimental outfit, No Age; the fifth studio LP from Deerhunter is a tour de indie with songs of psych-rock and electro-pop as only they can deliver; and the newest release from Abe Vigoda should be [...] Related posts:Best New Releases: Stars, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Club 8, Owen Pallett, Tender Trap, Chemical Brothers, Neighbors, Coliseum Recent Releases We Almost Missed VI: Owen Pallett, ARMS, Gareth Dickson, Monster Movie, Silver Seas Best New Releases: Elsinore, The Budos [...]
We've got quite a few great releases for you this week, and this time around we're going to try to fit them all in one post. Take a look at our quick rundown, and as always, if you dig what you hear, support the artists by picking up an album or two. Eric Clapton is back with his 19th studio album, Clapton via Reprise Records. Of the album, Clapton says, "This album wasn't what it was intended to be at all. It's actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let [...]

is a record that is guaranteed to be a record of the year candidate here on ze blog. The debut record by les Detachments! The record came out today through up and coming indie label Thisisnotanexit whom you will be hearing a lot about over the next few months. The love-child of Fad Gadget and early OMD raised by Cabaret Voltaire has finally descended on us (well...those of you in the UK) to paraphrase Orange Juice, rip it up and start again. The record blends early industrial, coldwave and a tinge of synthpop to create an opaque masterpiece. Consider this [...]
Things usually fare well for film geeks when they show a passion for making music. By film "geeks", I'm not referring to that friend who can name every David Lynch or Lars von Trier film. They might know every underground film in existence, but if they have no knowledge of production or the film aesthetic [...]
![[Review] OMD: History of Modern](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2849025_lg.jpg)
There's a big difference between playing the fans' favorite live and daring to stick your neck out to make a new album," says Andy McCluskey, one founding member of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The other half, Paul Humphreys, follows up in agreement, "we toured for a few years and we thought that we just can't keep on playing live trading on our former glories and we kind of got bored not having anything new to play, really" (Spinner.com, Sept. 2010). When I think of OMD and how vital they were to the growth and evolution of [...]

Ah, I remember OMD's minimal, society slating days. Okay, so being 22, that's a bit of a lie, but I feel like I do. That's the beauty of OMD; despite their music being distinctly period, sometimes it's nice to be transported back to a time when things made sense. A time when epic music was celebrated, not castigated - where effort counted. They sang in a time when technology was relished, rather than relied upon, although I'm quite glad they haven't retained the technology obsession they preached about in their earlier days... Whilst the awe of [...]

The new OMD album The History of Modern is (finally) out today, but thanks to the wonders of modern technology, I've been able to give a few listens prior to the release. The band still sounds unmistakably like OMD , as they have found inspiration everywhere in their back catalogue from Enola Gay to Walking on the Milky Way . Obviously the album is neither a new Architecture & [...]
I really should check my email with a fine-toothed comb because I just came across on informing me that OMD's newest record, History of Modern, is streaming in FULL on their MySpace page... right now! I'm listening to it as I type this and the...

The return of UK band OMD—aka Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark—just might be one of the best bits of news we've heard in Music Land in months! Sure, we've all geeked out to their classic Pretty In Pink soundtrack jam "If You Leave," but these guys were also responsible for at least a dozen other influential, shimmery synth-pop singles throughout the '80s and early '90s. Head below to hear "Save Me," their new mashup with Aretha Franklin. OMD's new album History Of Modern —their first [...]

The first time I visited the UK, it was with a friend, TJ, and another friend of his, Donna, whom I didn't know. It was a memorable two and a half weeks in a rented Daewoo, beginning in London, hitting both coasts and and so many castles - courtesy of TJ's itinerary - that Donna and I began to refer to the trip as The Castle Hostage Tour. TJ kept us plied with cigarettes and candy, resulting in a trek during which tensions flared only once or twice and those periods defused rather quickly. For some [...]

This is totally my fault and I accept full responsibility for it. OMD's newest single, "If You Want It," was released on Monday and I forgot to tell you all about it. I'm embarrassed, ashamed, and relinquish my medal as "OMD Fan #416." Whoever was #417 is one lucky SOB. I hope they can forgive me and at least let me stay in the OMD Top 500. "If You Want It" is off their upcoming album, History Of Modern, their first album in about 10,000 years it seems. This album reunites the original [...]

Hard Format has some great shots of the die-cut Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark LP cover. The cover was designed by Ben Kelly and Peter Saville for the Dindisc label. Die-cut is always a good idea and I love the vibrations between these blue and orange shades, something about it absolutely works. More info here , lots of other great sleeves at Hard Format . With their first release in 14 years, History of Modern , due to drop on the 20th September, it seemed only right to have a chat with OMD mainstay Paul Humphreys. As a youngster, I was brought up with their early synth-pop stylings, their Best Of selection on of the very first CD's I ever bought. It almost feels as if they've come full circle now - patched up their differences and released an almost "back-to-basics" album. It might not appease all the early fans, but it feels a comfortable place for OMD to be. [...]
