Years ago, while still ensconced in my former life as a music industry stooge (and proudly so), I was in a meeting with legendary polka bandleader Jimmy Sturr. Sturr's got more Grammies than Whitney... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .
Let me open with an apology: The metaphorical pause-button had to be depressed onto VinylSighting for a few weeks whilst I relocated. And, as any record-nerd will tell you, the worst part of... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .
![(Thanksgiving) Boston Music Miscellany [Buffalo Tom, Cuffs, One Happy Island, Mission of Burma, Travels, Wheat]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3886265_lg.jpg)
Thanksgiving. Great holiday or The Greatest Holiday? No gift-giving or gift-taking required, just a day to surround yourself with family, eat to your belly's content, and enjoy some calm before the impending onslaught of rampant consumerism. This long holiday weekend always helps me put things in perspective, gives me a break from sweating all that small stuff, and lets me appreciate all that I have. Which includes two fully functioning ears, lots of Boston-made music to put in them, and a place to write about it... If you're [...]
You're successful in a certain undersung capacity. Maybe you write the songs, but don't sing them. Maybe you provide some hot guitar, bass, clavinet, or drums. Maybe you produce things, but have yet... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .
Friday and Saturday can be found here . SUNDAY Stumbling out of the Travelodge at dawn (around 10:30), it was decided that Sunday would be the day that things were really mixed up. By which I mean we went to Sainsburys for breakfast instead of Tesco. It cost a little more, and the service was a little bit slower, but it was rather more tasty, so that's a good result I think. Shambling onto the site just before the first bands on, it was time for another [...]

Photography by geishaballs ... One of the greatest phrases of an adult's working life? "It's my Friday" It's kinda in your face, you know? It's got a little fuck you to it, depending on how much you emphasize the "my"... (Ir)regadless, it is! It's MY Friday! WOOT! Taking a long weekend with Momma Tsuru and my little birds are all coming into town tomorrow! Nice. Don't worry, I'll still be posting and whatnot, just possibly not as much? Not too sure. Either way, man today we gots a sweet [...]

Strange Boys This Austin band has captured all that was feel good about early 70's pop fuzzed it out and given it the garage band treatment. Their new single "Be Brave" wears the shine of a well defined sense of sound and allows their shouty group vocals stand out perfectly. A slow weedely guitar sets the attitude and a few fantastic sax solos provide the sparkle. Strange Boys will be stopping through Philly on September 19th at Kungfu Necktie for two shows with Those Darlins, Gentleman Jesse and His Men. [...]

"It seemed like a good idea at the time...make like a tree and please go away" One Happy Island 's debut release is 15 pretty different tracks. Some are sorta sad, some are manically happy, but all are kooky and cute with lyrics that make you want to smile. Although the electric ukulele goes a long way, it is most definitely the switches between boy and girl vocals and the harmonies that come between that make these guys so much fun. [...]

The self-titled debut album from One Happy Island is due to hit record shops on 5th July, released on Odd Box Records . I've had it at home for a pre-listen for some time, and it soon hit the top of my last-fm charts. The album shows the many sides of the band, from the calm and warm thoughtful songs to the fun circus-tunes with kazoos, ukuleles and brass-instruments. The album includes 15 songs, and when I first heard the album, my reaction was that this was a bit [...]
![WeePOP! Records [Label Spotlight]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2644458_lg.jpg)
There is a growing underground force of pop labels releasing music on nontraditional formats. Of these formats, two prevalent ones, at least in the lo-fi pop and twee pop arenas, are cassette and the 3-inch single. Being such a strong fan of the genres that release via these formats, one would think I would have the ability to play them when they arrive in my mailbox. Unfortunately, I do not at this time. (But boy do I love receiving them!) WeePOP! Records releases via the latter and they've built [...]

One Happy Island Today's free MP3 is ramshackle orchestral indiepop by Boston's One Happy Island and the track Cave City Sunrise Summer 2010 marks the release of their self-titled debut album on London's Oddbox Records label.
![Oh Happy Island [Feature]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2636847_lg.jpg)
I thought I recognized the Oh Happy Island name. The band recently released a few singles on 33 CD via the London-based pop label weePOP . The latest is that they have a new one out soon on Odd Box Records - the band's debut self-titled full-length. Oh Happy Island creates hyperactive pop with overly ambitious percussion (in a good way), a slew of chanting vocalists, and a sound entirely lo-fi and uninhibited by post production. They [...]

One Happy Island debut, self titled album is due to hit record shops on 5th July 2010 One Happy Island is an indie-pop band from Boston, Mass. They write pretty good songs and then bang them out on an electric ukulele, a rudimentary drum kit, and a hollow-body guitar that won't stay in tune. Records , [...]

So what are the magic ingredients to make a sweet lo-fi meets twee-pop band? Well, you'll definitely need a fun but cute name. You'll also need all your band members to join in and sing along in most tracks. Some mellow tracks in-between the fun are a must as well. And of' course you must have the boy/girl harmonies to sweeten things up even more. Well, One Happy Island seem to have all those elements. It's therefore no surprise that their self-titled debut is more than charming. The band has been together since 2007 and [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. One Happy Island are an indiepop band from Boston that "write pretty good songs and then bang them out on an electric ukulele, a rudimentary drum kit, and a hollow-body guitar that won't stay in tune". Which is pretty much exactly what they sound like. While other indiepop bands are content to wallow in their bedrooms, One Happy Island remember to bring the fun. Their entire album is so wonderfully ramshackle that it sounds like each song was thrown [...]
Real quick, you have to watch this, it's adorable and great. Thanks to William Skipping Stones for pointing this video out!

Day 5 in Austin was March 21, 2009. The morning began with a ride to the northern part of the eastern town, where five members of Balmorhea , an instrumental six-piece from Austin, were waiting to play a few songs for our video series, Secret Garden . We headed downtown and went to Red Eyed Fly to catch Harlem Shakes . This band's got a ton of good things going, but I'm still not sold on the lead voice. I remember [...]
