Brazilian musician Curumin has released one of the most eclectic albums of the year. "JapanPopShow" begins with the title track, a creepy, creeping murmur that is part lament, part spiritual, before launching into "Compacto," an upbeat, funky bossa nova track that brings a hip hop element by utilizing samples and scratches at the break, then gradually building back into the incredibly catchy hook for the fade out. I'm not generally a fan of songs in other languages, because I like to know what the song is about, but I find that with Curumin, the music is [...]

Let us start with the weaknesses of the new GZA album Pro Tools, the title of which implies that GZA doesn't need Pro Tools to compose his songs. Well, maybe he should have thought about stopping at the Apple store to pick up a copy because the beats throughout this album are weak and difficult to remember. There is nothing here that will capture and demand your presence on the dance floor, but

Having recently perused Oneida's new album PreTeen Weaponry from a few weeks ago, my first chance to see them live came at Lee's Palace in Toronto, Ontario last Friday. With a packed house on the deck remaining after Tropics played their 8 o'clock set, Lullaby Arkestra followed. Lullaby Arkestra The last true rock show I attended was Tool last summer and I loved it even though I only knew more than a few of their songs. Lullaby Arkestra [...]
This was my first time seeing Oneida , who played as a five piece with both a brashness and an energy that caused ears to ring hours after they were finished. The sound was thrashy but still rhythmic and recalled the climax of an action film several times. Hailing from Brooklyn, it was easy to feel as if the band was bringing to Chicago some of NYC's edge. Oneida is currently in this midst of their North American tour to support [...]

I'm way behind with my new release updates..... Noteworthy Records Released on 8/5/08: Records I've Heard: Darker My Love : 2 (Dangerbird) – The local band has put out an extremely likeable record that's a lot more polished than their first record. This one will draw more comparisons to Supergrass, Jesus & Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and (label mates) Silversun Pickups than Can or My Bloody Valentine. The band's two vocalists, Tim Presley and Rob Barbato, [...]

Fucked Up Year of the Pig (2008 Matador EP) Matador Records Over the course of a year, Fucked Up's more epic than epic, 18 minute, political, progressive punk statement, "Year of the Pig" has gone from a give 'em credit for their ambition type of song to one of the essential songs of this decade, worthy of the expanded reissue treatment provided by Matador's recent Year of the Pig EP. Here, all 18 minutes of the original "Year of the Pig" are included along with three 7" edits and four b-sides. With [...]

Another week, another batch of new releases to sink our teeth into. I haven't listened to much this week, but i've really liked the few songs i've heard from Brazilian Girls' New York City , Oxford Collapse's Bits , and Ida's My Fair, My Dark EP. I've never particularly liked anything from C onor Oberst , so I doubt I will be listening to his new release anytime soon (didn't he just have an album out not too long ago?). Feel free to recommend anything else that [...]

Oneida 's latest Preteen Weaponry drops today on the pretty much flawless Jagjaguwar label. Preteen Weaponry is part of a sprawling multi-album project dubbed "Thank Your Parents." What Oneida's vision exactly is remains rather mysterious, but will rule nonetheless. Preteen Weaponry features three movements, and is the first in the series. Oneida is always reliably prolific. Though the new jams don't depart too much from Each One Teach One 's first towering disc, you can't complain too much with consistent output. Oneida is the best non-kraut kraut [...]
It's been over 10 years since Oneida's first release, and they're still going at it with the ferocity and experimentation they always have. It's hard to tag a long-standing, accurate description to a band like this; they're always taking on new sounds and ideas. Of course, each album lives in its own world, but even the lack of similarities from song to song within a single LP can be surprising. On one tr ack, the band can be in the depths of a vigorous psychedelic rock jam--exploring every nook and cranny of the song's key with distorted guitars [...]

The first part of Oneida's Thank Your Parent releases, Preteen Weaponry , comes out today on Jagjaguwar. Described as a Can/Suicide collision, one will find that on par when taking on this three track largely instrumental work. Following that, one might assume correctly that the album's modus operandi is always at least somewhat concerned with working repetitive riffs and rhythms to spiraling hypnotic effect. With conviction and connection, Oneida open with the traverse of the terrestrial backdrop of Pt. 1, containing an unwinding riff with a mounting density which brings to mind Hawkwind's Space [...]

It sounds like Wolfmother tuning up! Oneida's "Preteen Weaponry" is a CD with just three "songs", each of which clocks in at over ten minutes in length. You might call it a jam session, much like the extended spacey blues jams that the Grateful Dead started doing in 1966. But it's more accurately called a noiserock symphony, almost entirely instrumental, and was recorded over the course of one day. Every part is precise--there are no mistakes, no happy coincidences--although it has a purely improvisational feel. This is not an easy album to listen to, but [...]

Today I have prepared a nice sampler from the The Jagjaguwar / Secretly Canadian / Dead Oceans family of labels. Some are new, some are old, all are worth a listen.
