Grizzly Bear The Yellow House So The new Grizzly Bear album actually fits in with both the current and previous theme. I would describe it as a wildly expansive and experimental pop record. To me, the songs feel like winding paths. Which isn't to say that the songs are structureless, but perhaps unconventional. The most obvious reference points that come to mind would have to be a very lively Animal Collective, and perhaps Mercury Rev or The Soft Bulletin era Flaming Lips (especially percussionwise.) After a few listens, [...]

Music: Ive been pretty psyched about this new song from Boredoms affiliate OOIOO. Its basically just drums and girls chanting. Its like the pogo-girl punk equivalent of japanese noise, and it's awesome. OOIOO - UMA Sci-fi: In the vein of Laz's last post I think I should write a little more about science fiction, which is my supposed topic. And not the sci-fi-esque crap I normally do. Speaking of sci-fi-esque crap, I should mention that I feel there are a lot of [...]

I think the ladies got a little carried away with the screechy chants and random noisemakers this time around. If you have a high tolerance for music that strives to sound unpleasant, the full album, Taiga , is in stores today. tags: music | mp3 [...]

So I can't help but love most forms of Japanese indie music. Call it culture shock or just something lost in translation but it seems like whatever current runs through the Japanese underground is definitely unique to Japan, and can't be replicated in music outside of the country. J-punk screams but with an exuberance that any American noise act would translate into aggression. Japanese psych is able to tap the spiritual core of their indigenous musical forms without feeling like they're dabbling in mysicism from an outside perspective. OOIOO, the brainchild of Boredoms drummer Yoshimi P-we, captures the clamor of [...]
