This week is Discotexas which presents its first release of this 2012. We all know that everything that comes from the Portuguese label is a guarantee but this time they have excelled themselves. The newcomers are Jay Lamar & Jesse Oliver , a duo coming from Helsinki (Finland), who first met at a music production school discovering their common taste in music. Both had experience producing and remixing, so when they hit the studio for the first time a house, disco and electro explosion took place. "Diamonda", is their debut EP which features their first original tracks, [...]

Diplo & Switch, the masterminds behind Major Lazer, are no strangers to mixtapes and collaborations having worked with M.I.A. and Santigold (back when she was Santogold.....ahh the good old days). Now they've teamed up with electro-dance-pop duo La Roux for a 14 song monster of a cassette. By sending your email address to their site they'll send you the whole thing for free. I don't know what the hell just happened. I went on about a 2 hour expedition searching for new jams and somehow I came across this brainwashing anthem that I'm now presenting you with. I don't even think I'm typing right now, the song has been on repeat for an hour and a half and it's typing for me. Don't know who it's by, don't know what it is, just push play and you'll black out immediately. This is some Mugatu shit right here. Download: Saycet - Opal (Error :: Love - Opalowsky Remix) [...]

Before Mazzy Star, there was Opal.
While Devil is perhaps a little more folk than the Paisley Underground influenced dream pop of Sandoval's yesteryear, longtime fans need not worry that she is heading in any radical new direction. The new material is a long overdue continuation of her very distinct slow-fuzz sound.
2009 is looking to be rather adventurous and prolific for '90s dream-pop singer Hope Sandoval . A refreshing change from almost a decade's worth of silence, Sandoval will appear as a guest vocalist on Massive Attack 's upcoming full-length. More importantly, Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions , the hazy, folky group formed at the turn of the century, will release their long, long, LONG awaited sophomore record, Through the Devil Softly, on September 29th (preview a free track from the album here ). Though this flurry of activity is most exciting, [...]

Last week while I was listening to Kevin Cole on KEXP he played a song from Purrs ' new album followed by the Dream Syndicate 's Tell Me When It's Over which reminded me of a couple things. One, how much I love Kevin Cole's kid in a candy store approach to his daily show (you never know what he might grab off the shelf) and two: how much the Purrs seem to be influenced by the Paisley Underground. About a year ago when I saw them across the street from the Green [...]
Well, here we are at the halfway point of this series. This post represents bands that were formed in 1984 (to the best of my knowledge and research). I am particulary fond of this year because some of the bands are in my all time favorite category. Notably, The Jesus & Mary Chain , My Bloody Valentine and Love and Rockets . I left out a couple more - Timbuk 3 (who gave us the hit "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades") and also The Del [...]

While looking through the archives recently for a certain disc, I came across a self-made compilation entitled "Pure & Unadulterated Northern Soul: Volume 1". I remember that I had four volumes of this which I would use when DJing Northern Soul nights around Los Angeles. I also copied these discs for interested friends. I'm posting this compilation in its entirety here as it's as perfect a "Northern Soul's Greatest Hits!" mix as anything you are likely to find. Some of these songs are complete classics for me. I could go on [...]

Vintage clothier Opal Thornburgh and I were walking down H8 street after doing a little shopping when we saw these two girls taking photos on the street. Dumbly, we looked at them, and I guess something about us caught there eyes and they accosted us. "Can we take your photo? It's for our fashion blog!!!!" and we were like, OK. So, of course we were feeling a little creeped out, but we didn't want to be mean, or a bitch or anything so we just let them. After taking a few pix, we think ok, this [...]

My wife just got her first iPod, and a couple days ago she asked me if I could re-create the first mixtape I gave her in an iTunes playlist. Could I recreate a mixtape I had made nearly thirteen years ago for her iPod? Yeah, I could do that. If she had asked me to do something simple like change a diaper or take out the garbage, I probably would have said "in a minute," then promptly forgotten about it. But creating a playlist for my wife was something I was willing to get to work on immediately. [...]

It's a fine line between dreamy and narcoleptic. Maybe it's the difference between Hope Sandoval and Kendra Smith's voices, but while I always found Opal's music beautiful and hypnotic, I thought Mazzy Star (essentially the same band with a different singer) were pretty dull. Actually, truth be told, Opal's lone LP, Happy Nightmare Baby , was a little too "weird scenes inside the goldmine" for my taste. It has some good tracks to be sure, but much of it meanders. In my opinion, the band's really killer stuff can be found on the Early [...]
