The latest episode of Shots Fired takes its title from this Busdriver song that seemed to obliquely epitomize the Harvard & Stone saga of the last week. Also, the room was comprised of myself, Nocando, the great O-Dub , and Open Mike Eagle. The description is below. Hopefully, it contributes to a discussion that we should be having - one that usually devolves into ad hominem attacks and LL Cool J and Braid Paisley songs. "Music writer/scholar/DJ Oliver Wang of soul-sides.com & 3rd member of Shots Fired Open Mike Eagle join MC Nocando [...]

I apologize for dropping this one on you with such short notice. But I will make amends by presenting a free show featuring Chicano Batman, an Ariel Pink DJ set, Open Mike Eagle, and Wild Pack of Canaries, who may or may not be a giant cage of birds that I will unleash at the stroke of midnight to the delight and horror of Harvard & Stone patrons. To recap, festivities start at 9 p.m. Harvard & Stone is at 5221 Hollywood Blvd. I will be there in my blue satin 70s tuxedo. It costs $0 and zero [...]

As if we needed another reason to love Open Mike Eagle and his music, dude just dropped one of the best performance videos of the year so far. He linked with Beats Rhymes and Life and they brought along some cameras to film Mike rocking a new track, "Qualifiers", live in a 24-hour laundromat. The Taco Neck-produced joint is a sharp, quotable-filled cut from the Los Angeles-by-way-of-Chicago rapper, who delivers each line to the amusement of the folks around him trying to clean and fold their clothes. You can watch the [...]

Try Stopping {ft. Mikhael, Open Mike Eagle & Nissim} by Diwon Diwon is a global artist. He’s known to New York audiences for his mix of Middle Eastern samples and Baltimore club beats. He is renowned worldwide for his remixes of pop acts like Lana Del Rey. On the inside, Diwon has the heart of a true-school hip-hop head. “Try Stopping” which hits streets April 30th, is the first single to be released from his forthcoming album, “New Game.” which will be released this August 6th. After producing countless albums for [...]

Inspired by a last minute cancellation and the enduring reality that all rappers are lead singers (and most have lead singer syndrome), the latest episode of Shots Fired features myself, Nocando, and our guests Open Mike Eagle and Taurus Scott talking about rappers who live on their own time, how fame effects a rapper’s ego, and why conscious rappers sometimes have the worst case of lead singer syndrome. Plus, Taurus tells us about his time working with G-Unit, Open Mike Eagle shares lead singer syndrome stories from touring, and Nocando tells us about [...]

This is from Kampala Blackouts, the album OME & Ras G recorded on their trip to Uganda. Last May, Ras G and I received a grant through the LA department of Cultural Affairs and the non-profit org J.U.I.C.E. to travel to Uganda to make music with the rappers and producers there. The result is the Kampala Blackouts EP thats available for free download here: http://www.mediafire.com/?snia bbaabnldpi3

I'm so happy we all survived SXSW. I made us a playlist because we're such troopers, and there are some artists on there that I got to see live during SXSW, like Open Mike Eagle (amazing), Willie Green (phenomenal and has a new album out called We Live In The Future ), Psalm One (awesome and with an album forthcoming this fall from Rhymesayers). But I'm just here to bring you a mix of some nice tracks for your Friday, maybe introduce you to some artists or tracks you haven't heard before, and get you a pleasant soundtrack for [...]

Review courtesy of the Uber Max Bell. Milwaukee's Milo has a "big brain"- like Jimmy Neutron if he talked about Nietzsche's Übermensch instead of science. Think of Milo as a more introspective and well read Ab-Soul for fans of Vonnegut and Phillip K. Dick. Allusions aside, he's an intelligent, unabashedly horny '90s baby with an inexhaustible store of knowledge (high/low culture and otherwise) and a prodigious gift for thought-provoking and brow-furrowing bars. His come-ons are only understood by those who know the fantastic '90s Nickelodeon game show Legends of the Hidden Temple . He swears he's [...]

The new Shots Fired episode on Earwolf examines Chicago rap from Common to Chief Keef and all points in between. Because Nocando and I are Los Angeles bored and bred, we brought in Tal Rosenberg , the online editor of the Chicago Reader and Open Mike Eagle, the South Side-raised online editor of art rap. Or as he is popularly known: the Marc Maron of dark-skinned art barons. The episode description is below the jump, along with the MP3. In this episode, I learned to do the Percolator, which was a very important moment in [...]
Now this is fucked up. Open Mike Eagle is an alternative hip-hop artist, and in Self Medication Chant he's found a way to overlay a handful of tracks so that absolutely no rhythmic elements overlap whatsoever. The resulting beat is profoundly stoned, and you'll want to hold on to it so as not to fall into the sinkhole of depression and paranoia that is the lyric. A report from the edge. Open Mike Eagle - Self Medication Chant (alternate download) [...]

Milo - Things That Happen At Day/Things That Happen At Night Hellfyre Club: 2013 “Underground hip-hop” doesn’t exist in the same area that it did 10 years ago. Def Jux is a thing of the past, Aesop Rock is still making music but it’s not the same headspace that Labor Days came out of, and overall things are just, well, different. I speak of that with some kind of nostalgia, because that was, like many people, my formal introduction to getting involved in the music world. Stones Throw, Def Jux, and Rhymesayers were all that mattered and [...]

If you are one of those people who is obsessed with audio fidelity and formality, this might not be your favorite episode. Due to Blockhead and Nocando's tour schedules, the only time we could get together to record this episode was on a Saturday afternoon at my apartment, buoyed by a lot of Irish whiskey, weed, and a sleeping Boston terrier with a chain saw snore. The recording was improvised on my laptop Garage Band with no external mic. Somehow, it exists and I think turned out funny. We talked about rap alter-egos and nonsense and [...]

In case you didn't notice, the world didn't come to an end today. Hooray! Moving on, the past week has been a busy one for us here at Potholes. We got around to bringing you the remainder of our year-end lists, including the best albums , remixes , EPs , and Nardwuar interviews . That last one was a particular favorite of mine, if only because I got to re-live all the great conversations the Human Serviette's had in the past year. Additionally, there were some fine-ass tunes that dropped this week, including the [...]

If you are reading this after December 12, 2012, then congratulations on surviving yet another overrated doomsday prediction. In fact, you deserve a purple heart for getting through 2012 alone. But now get ready for that festivus time of year where the spirit of family and friends sets upon us all while we hope that Santa or someone brings us a copy of Trash Talk's 400+ pictures strong Book 2 from Dovecote that will make a great addition to grandma's coffee table art book collection. So ...
![Ras G – Kampala Blackouts ft. Open Mike Eagle and Mon MC [audio]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4682901_lg.jpg)
The Kampala Blackouts EP was recorded over a two-week span in Kampala, Uganda in May of 2012. Featuring Los Angeles-based beatmaker and Brainfeeder recording artist, Ras G, and Los-Angeles-based Hellfyre Club recording artist, Open Mike Eagle, along with Ugandan rapper Mon MC, this project is the result of an international hip-hop exchange program between hip-hop non-profit J.U.i.C.E. (Justice by Uniting in Creative Energy) and AGYA (Amagezi Gemaanyi Youth Association), an NGO in Kampala, Uganda…
