The crowd - Operation Ivy I think now might be the time for me to reappraise Operation Ivy. From be all, end all ska-punk progenitor and crust gateway drug (an early, early gateway) to their place in that Berkley/Gilman Street scene (and beyond in underground American music at that time. Not only ska) not as kings but just as part of a larger whole. As they were when they were active, not as t-shirts and myth. It has been a while since i left [...]

They didn't last very long, but California ska-punks Operation Ivy have garnered enough fans over the years to demand their ... Read the full article at http://www.prefixmag.com/news/ operation-ivy-to-reissue-catal og-on-vinyl/62655/
Lookout! Records , the Berkeley, California-based record label and one-time home of Green Day, Operation Ivy, Rancid, The Donnas, Alkaline Trio, and countless others, is no more, according to the label's former signee Ted Leo. In a message posted on his website , Leo revealed that while the label had ceased putting out new material in 2006, it was still printing back catalogs until December. Now, however, the label has "sadly, shuttered its windows for good," explained Leo. Leo, who released four Ted Leo and the Pharmacists records through Lookout! during the early 2000s, went on to [...]

Alright, alright...I'm a huge fan of the punk (and related) genre. Punk was the first thing I got in touch with as a kid and this encounter has truly influenced my life and tastes regarding music forever. Thus, with that, I bring you a little list of bands from the past and present that fall into the punk genre and punk subgenres. This music isn't for everybody, but if you are into this kinda stuff then this list is for bands that are worth remembering and/or checking out. 1. Bad Brains If [...]
Operation Ivy - Sleep Long I don't know if it is the looooong, drawn-out transformation from Winter to Spring that happens here, or if its the governments fault, or Illuminati secret technology they got from lizard-people and gray aliens in effect, or my own psychosis, but for almost two weeks now, I haven't had a restful sleep. Hopefully, that ends this weekend. I am turning off all phones, disabling the door-bell, securing my spot on the bed and kicking the cats to the wife's side. Tonight, I'm going to sleep the sleep of justice, friends! Till the [...]

What are you doing today? Me, I am painting a wall. Lost in thought I stumbled on an old Bad Religion track on my computer. This shortly snowballed into a newly formed iTunes playlist featuring some of my favourite punk(ish) songs from my youth. If you weren't really into this stuff back in the late 902s then give it a whirl. For those of you who were, enjoy the walk down memory lane. This week is Riotfest in Chicago - punk rock taking over da city, 33 years later! Look at this schedule of rock above! Bad Religion, Articles of Faith, Jello Biafra and his Guantanamo thing, old school faves Smokin' Popes, Subverts and Negative Approach and a load of other bands. Wish I were there. But you Chicagoans know who you are! Have fun! Post video. A little closer to home, here in Phoenix (Tempe), there's a killer double bill at the Clubhouse . Devil's Brigade , the side project fronted by Rancid / Operation Ivy bassist Matt Freeman, has been around a long time. They first appeared on a 2002 Hellcat Records compilation, and later released a couple of singles. After eight years though, they've finally gotten around to dropping an album. 'Bout time. The self-titled debut includes Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong on guitar and DJ Bonebroke of L.A. punk legends X on the skins. The punk throwback LP hit stores last week, complete with an elaborate theatrical concept. "The original concept for this record [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive While Matt Freeman was writing songs for his Devil's Brigade side project, the Rancid bassist found himself listening to a lot of X . This made sense since that legendary Los Angeles group was among the first to mix rockabilly and punk, two of the styles Freeman was attempting to fuse. As he prepared to enter the studio with guitarist Tim Armstrong [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Rob Naples Devil's Brigade are just now readying the release of its first album, a self-titled collection due Aug. 31, but it's been around for the better part of a decade. The band made its debut on the 2002 Hellcat Records sampler 'Give 'Em the Boot III,' swooping in mid-disc with 'Vampire Girl,' a showcase for Rancid bassist Matt Freeman's raspy, ferocious vocals and proficiency on the upright bass. Freeman [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Rob Naples Matt Freeman is the reason many young punks pick up -- and later slam down in frustration -- the bass guitar. Armed with a Fender electric and medium-thin pick, Freeman is to the California punk band Rancid what John Entwistle was to the Who , the rare bassist who steps out of the pocket, runs roughshod over the fret board and functions as a lead [...]

Using the hashtag (#) followed by "MusicMonday" you can easily find new music posted by the thousands of people making recommendations each week. Every #MusicMonday I upload a playlist of 20 songs that I've been listening to (new and old) over the past week [...]
You'd think after the debacle posting The Henry Clay People 's "Your Famous Friends" last week we'd be wary of posting another clip by the band. But you'd be thinking wrong. The L.A.-based act recently performed a live set at Fingertips, which we think is a record store somewhere, and at some point requests were taken, and the result is the awesome video above wherein The Henry Clay People tackle The Replacements ' "Can't Hardly Wait" and -- astonishingly -- Operation Ivy 's "Knowledge." Check it out. The Henry Clay People will play [...]
