We're just in that sort of mood today. So how about a metal round up? Last week, Thursday and Envy unleashed a weighty split on Temporary Residence, with Rickley and co. reminding us why Full Collapse was such a hit, and the manic-metaloids of Envy offering up three hefty love letters to dynamics and [...]

About a month an a half ago, OPETH came into town and were absolutely amazing. We had the pleasure of speaking with frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt and guitarist Fredrik Åkesson before the show. Maybe its just because they are Sweedish, but they came off very honest and humble and it was truly a pleasure for [...]

ARTIST: Opeth and High on Fire - [Live] plus free mp3s VENUE: Regency Grand Ballroom, San Francisco DATE: 10-27-08 REVIEW BY: Raymond Ahner PHOTO: Raymond Ahner To say that I was excited about this show would've been an understatement. Opeth, a band that I had missed every time that they've played San Francisco, were back, and this time they were bringing with them one of my favorite bands, High On Fire, and a band I had been curious about for a long time, [...]
Metal Bastard tells us that Swedish metallers Memfis have got two new tracks up on their MySpace page. I've written about Memfis in this space before, but it bears repeating because you all have thick skulls: they're an excellent metal band from Sweden (NOT melodeath/metalcore/Swedecore/ whatever) whose 2006 release The Wind Up turned more than a [...]
Apropos of nothing, we just wanna say: PLEASE DON'T SEE SAW V THIS WEEKEND. It's time for that stupid fucking franchise to die already. If you're in the mood for a horror movie because Halloween is coming up, there's better fucking things you can rent. For fuck's sake, just watch John Carpenter's original Halloween again. [...]
Swedish metal act Memfis has two new tracks up: http://www.myspace.com/memfisb and If you dig Opeth and haven't heard these guys yet, you're missing out.

Hell-o!
A month or so ago Opeth came to New York's Nokia Theater as part of an awesome (and diverse) package with High on Fire and Nachtmystium. It was one of those nights; a Monday or Tuesday, I was fucking exhausted from having traveled cross-country the night before, partied too many nights in a row, just [...]
Stockholm, Sweden's brilliant death metal supergroup BLOODBATH has just posted the brand new song "Ieosos" from their forthcoming aptly titled third full-length album The Fathomless Mastery to their Myspace and their mini-site for the album, due for European release on October 6th and North American release on October 28th. For those not familiar with this [...]

Metal Sucks is reporting that Nachtmystium have been forced to drop off the Opeth tour due to "issues beyond control." We recently discussed this tour's stop in NYC, and can say with certainty that Nachtmystium will be sorely missed for the rest of this leg. Live, they brought an intensity to their new material, without neglecting their older catalogue. Nachtmystium stated that they hope to have everything in order soon, to ensure their dates with Wolves in The Throne Room go on. Read [...]
Even the best package tours usually have at least one weak spot, band-wise; but the Opeth/High on Fire/Nachtmystium tour, which Vince and I got to check out last week, is pretty much perfect from start to finish. And one of the reasons is - or guess now I should say "was" - the presence of Nachtmystium. [...]

by theseseans (NYC) Shows have been starting early lately, and when I saw that the doors at Nokia Theater were opening at 6, I made sure to get there early at 6:15. Of course the one time I get there early, the show didn't start until 7:30; a minor annoyance however, could not touch the good mood that Nachtmystium put me in when they kicked into 'One Of These Nights.' The band played the first three song of their latest album, Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1 intensely. Following those up was 'Your [...]
Last night, Frank and I attended the NYC stop of Opeth's headlining tour with High on Fire and Nachmystium. Unfortunately, we missed the opening two bands so we can't speak for them but everybody we spoke with said that we missed a hell of a show from both bands, and I believe it. We [...]
by theseseans (NYC) Tonight! Opeth , High on Fire , and Nachtmystium play the Nokia Theater in Times Square. Fuck, I am excited as this will be my first time seeing Opeth. Also this week in NYC metal, we have the ever illustrious Motorhead , with support from Valient Thorr rocking Saturday night at Roseland. Along with these shows we have several excellent local shows to pepper your otherwise weak weekend, including Friday night's Unsound show at Fontana's featuring Unearthly Trance , [...]
And it's a question I can't answer just yet, because I haven't heard all of Lazarus Bird, which drops September 16th on Relapse. But from the three songs I've heard on their MySpace page ("I Exterminate the I," "Cripple God" and "We Watched the Silver Rain"), I can tell you this: it is without a [...]
A novel idea: instead of posting EVERY new release, I'm just posting what I deem to be the "important" ones. As always, anything I miss is up to you. Radiohead , Coldplay , A Perfect Circle , Opeth and My Morning Jacket are putting out vinyl versions of their back catalog. Other than that, the only major highlights are the new Underoath album and the return of New Kids On the Block . :: A Perfect Circle , Mer de Noms [...]

Crustcake is very excited about September 18th, the NYC stop of will surely be one of the best US tours this fall : Opeth , Baroness , High on Fire , and Nachtmystium . Not satisfied to let any of America go without their unique take on black metal, Nachtmystium has scheduled several other U.S. dates in support of their 2008 release Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1 . After the Opeth tour, Nachtmystium will be hitting the road with Wolves in the Throne Room . Read [...]

I'm not sure what it is about Sweden, but their music scene doesn't seem to have too much in the middle ground. Either it's more-twee-than-twee pop like Jens Lekman or The Radio Dept. or it's face-melting metal like Opeth or In Flames. (OK...I realise this is a gross generalisation and where would you put a stoner-rock band like Dungen in there?) I like both ends of spectrum for completely different reasons. And the thing with both of them? You have to suspend your sense of the ridiculous for a moment. Twee pop can be so unbelievably wussy and [...]
