It's been a great year for the Oceanic music to break big all over the world, from Twerps to Geoffrey O' Connor and now to Opposite Sex . Their self-titled album is something that should definitely make it into your weekly playlist, otherwise you're going to be missing some special goodness. In my mind, the first run through, I thought of a cleaner, more playful version of Love Is All , which is one of my favorite acts. It's got a little bit of an off-kilter [...]

The Opposite Sex are a bit behind the times. But, you see, that's a good thing because these masters of dark swirling art pop probably haven't bought a new record since 1984 and they've now channelled those influences and rushed them to today. The results of all this is a time swelling, noisy sheet of noise that's dramatic and oh so good. Their album, Live and Burn will have anyone who knows anything about music very excited. For those of you who just downloaded your first Echo and the Bunnymen tune you'll enjoy it as well. [...]

David Bazan: "Bless This Mess" The new song "Bless This Mess" from David Bazan has made the rounds, but it deserves to make the rounds again. My favorite Pedro album was Control and this seems to have a bit of that dismal electronic-inspired feel. Looking forward to the full album, Curse Your Branches , out later this fall from Barsuk. More mp3's after the jump... Nakatomi Plaza: "The Finish Line" [...]

To be honest, you're going to have to be pretty special if you're going to be travelling under these colours: The Opposite Sex has been described as majestic, powerful, dramatic, intense and unhinged. Apt verbiage considering a handful of the band's influences which include Echo & The Bunnymen, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Killing Joke, New Model Army, T.S.O.L and other 80s-era legends with beautiful hair. I'm not entirely sure it's possible to sound like the Bunnymen and New Model Army; it's like having a pixie boot that's shaped like a clog. And I'm [...]

I'll get back to you on unhinged after October's test flight. Frozen Heart, Frozen Mind • The Opposite Sex , from their upcoming album Live + Burn (out September 1st)

Ana Bender (pronounced "on-a-bender", duh) is a boy-girl duo that's one part Anton Glamb , one part Ana Dyson and all parts go. Anton, from all over (Hawaii, NYC, your mind) and Ana (Seattle-based) make the sort of rudimentary kitchen-sink-tossed pop music that slashes everything up and patches it back in a way that doesn't remotely resemble the original iteration. But that doesn't make it worse, it just makes it more fun. It's simple guitar and shout-speak songs like these that make us happy to be alive, happy to dance, happy to rip shit up and [...]
It's Friday night, and you're reading this piece of shit. Do you know where your social life is? While perusing some old top ten lists, I realized that there was a lot of dating advice contained within the archives. Why? I don't know. Don't take my advice. I spent the last three years of my life treating women like shit and having the time of my life...but that behavior is not for everyone. Well, if you're spending your time on this website, odds are you don't have any dates scheduled for the next few weeks (months, or years). [...]

There are some bands who are reluctant to point out their influences, fearing that such remarks would take away from their suggested innovation. While many take pride in sounding comparably favorable to their idolized inspirations, it remains a sensitive issue in the widespread desire to be separated from any other artist in a creative manner, either past or present. In atypical form, The Opposite Sex displays complete pride in sounding like a wholesome form of classic 80s post-punk. While the specific genre has been one of the most often utilized forms of revitalization this past decade, popular acts [...]
