Victoria George and Or the Whale bring some country to the city at The Independent in San Francisco.

Or, the Whale - "Rusty Gold" Or, the Whale is returning from a hiatus to perform a rare show tonight at The Independent , and a recent post from the band's blog suggests that there's some possibility this might be it for SF's alt-country darlings: So, here's the deal: after a few months of "hiatus" we are playing a show at the Independent in SF. We are splitting the bill with Victoria George and there will be some collaborations in each set. [...]

Or, The Whale Call and Response Be sure to check out one of my favorite San Francisco folk acts, Or, The Whale at SXSW 2011 . They’ve got anywhere from 6 to 14 members in there band at any given time, and love to invite friends and other bands on stage to party and sing along with them. There show is always a great time, and you walk away feeling like you just made 100 new friends.
Check out the concerts happening around the Bay Area this week — after the jump. Ages ago, I found this R.E.M. bootleg at a now-defunct record shop. It was wonderful, and intimate, and full of strange cover versions I had never heard. Just before launching into "World Leader Pretend," Michael Stipe says: "We're really happy to be here at Mountain Stage. We're surrounded by really good people, and we're gonna do a couple songs for you." At the time, I had no idea where, or what, Mountain Stage was... but I wanted to be there. Years later, thanks to the magic of the Internet and NPR Music , I get to experience amazing, live [...]
This is Outside Lands weekend, and a surprising number of excellent non-Outside Lands related gigs are happening concurrently. So, if you don't feel like watching Kings Of Leon getting pooped on (although who wouldn't love to see that!), you've got some crazy good options. Read On! Thursday, August 12th Or The Whale, These United States, [...]

The Rickshaw Stop will host not just two stellar Bay Area bands and one band from San Diego on Friday, June 11th (8:30 pm, $10). The Rickshaw Stop will host one local country-rock mainstay, one relatively new surf-pop outfit, and one clever Beatles reference all at once. Or, the Whale - "Rusty Gold" AB & the Sea - "Suzie" Or, the Whale are scheduled to headline, AB & the Sea will play before, and San Diego's Get Back [...]

San Fran Roots Band Blows Breath of Fresh Air Into SXSW After 5 days of mostly scratchy, noisy, indie rock, baby bands playing next door to our event, the sound wafting over the fence on the last night of SXSW was so delightfully pleasant it stopped me i ...
Day two. Very tired. Big day yesterday. Giddy day. My vocabulary isn't wide enough to express my joy. Seriously, it starts with Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and gets better as the day went on. Uffie Really, my day started with Uffie. I heard three minutes. She's really pretty. She can rap. Sort of. Sharon Jones & [...]

In celebration of our third annual Bay Area Takeover party this Thursday, March 18th at Austin's Beauty Bar , we're dedicating this week's podcast to music from all 15 bands that will be performing at the show. Whether you will be in Austin or not, these are all bands that play around the Bay regularly, and they're all well worth checking out. Also, Nicole and Anna took over hosting duties for this episode, so enjoy that change-up before our dour monotones return next week. The editors are all heading [...]

I believe Seattle has spawned a new subculture I'm coining as hicksters. These guys probably grew up in Seattle. Suburban white kids with wealthy parents just like hipsters. But, they're dressed like they came from a farm where dating your cousin is the norm. Your beard(like the amish) is never long enough. and the uniform consists of boots, carharts, and either flannel or a cowboy flair button-up. Little did I know, this definition is already on urban dictionary. Don't you hate when your ideas were already someone else's IDEA? Headlining Wednesday was: The Maldives.(pronounced mall-deevs) [...]

If you can't find something to do in here, then well, we just can't help you. There are plenty of things to choose from! Trust us!
Every few weeks comes the necessary roundup of recent media that we'd love to share from Bay Area bands. Merging gorgeous visuals with local independent music, One Night Music is a new treat for us. ONM's most recent session, with the mesmerizing collective Honeycomb , was documented back in December at BlueSix. The session includes downloadable audio, videos for every song, a thorough biography and contributed coverage from Mission Local . Above, Viennese videographers They Shoot Music - [...]

Time for Monday's weekly delivery of five songs that are newly making me bounce my behind... We Are Standard - The First Girl Who Got A Kiss Without A Please When you hear that We Are Standard are from Northern Spain, thoughts of Latin jams and ay-yay-yays come to mind. Incorrectly as it turns out: quickly building a reputation in the blogosphere, WAS actually produce a rhythmic and punkish dance-rock. With a debut album produced by Gang of Four's Andy Gill soon to arrive, this is the first single, featuring a pared-down sound and some [...]

I was going to develop this post more. I ran out of time. I'll make it up to you next time. The point is that Klosterman is a great author if you love music and pop culture. He even writes fiction! If you need something new to read, it's inALLcaps recommended. Found in the book IV By Chuck Klosterman: Interviewing Britney Spears is like deposing Bill Clinton: Regardless of the evidence, she does not waver. "Why do you dress so provocatively?" I ask. She says she doesn't dress provocatively. "But [...]
