DC is giving away all sorts of goodies on The Waiting Room this week. In fact, he's giving away all sorts of things that I would rather like to win myself, bar a couple of things which I have already. I was supposed to write this last week, but given it appears I have some sort of Black Belt in Fuckwittery, I managed to miss it by a week. Idiot. Anyhow, all you have to do is listen to last week's episode and email DC with the weight, pounds or kilos, [...]
It's been raining all day here in Sweden and I'm bored out of my skull, so in an attempt to cure myself I thought I'd share some good songs. MP3: Tapes 'n Tapes - "The Dirty Dirty" MP3: Elle S'appelle - "Honestly" MP3: Prototypes - "Clap Your Hands" MP3: Or, The Whale [...]

"I've got to get me a strumming guitar, my main guitar doesn't do strum. Maybe it's me that can't do strum, I sure as hell don't need a n o t h e r guitar, unless it's a pedal steel, or a national..." Or, the whale are responsible for this train of thought by the way, in the same way that Calexico and Nixon make me want big, curvatious, sunburst Gibson acoustics, Or, the whale on the other hand with their classy [...]

Last night I hosted ipickmynose- fav Or, the Whale ( myspace ) on KZSU . I didn't know beforehand, but they decided to do an acoustic set: guitars, banjo, accordion, a variety of percussion and lots of voices. Given their sound and this set up, it had a real front porch feel to it. It was loose and fun while still keeping the musicianship that the stage show has. Here's what they played : [...]

more whales here . Whalebones - Don't You Know? I discovered this song the other day (via the Fader ). The band's got the whole Neil Young veneration thing going on, similar to the crew of Black Mountain. More songs for download on their myspace . Or, the Whale - Fight Song I mostly picked this cause it fits with the theme. The arrangement is really nice--I like the steel guitar bits. Also, the singer drawls words ever so slightly, in a [...]
San Francisco, CA This bunch is so adorable. They're set to start recording their follow-up to Light Poles & Pines , so look for new material from Or, The Whale soon. "Saint Bernard" Or, The Whale on MySpace Or, The Whale on The Hype Machine

Download: Or, The Whale - Isn't She Awful San Francisco grade band Or, The Whale will be at the Noise Pop Fest this year. As is their right. They'll be at Cafe Du Nord on Feb. 28th if they can fit on the stage. Okay I'm making them sound larger than they are. I like a band with more than 4 people. Fills the eardrums. More Noise Pop Info: Noise Pop XVI [...]

how in the world did i completely overlook or, the whale in 2007... cause=time was singing their praises way back in june...the san francisco septet plays catchy, countrified indie rock that utilizes the pedal steel & four-part harmonies & were voted one of the worst band names of the year by the av club ...their self released debut album, light poles & pines , is great from beginning to end & definitely worth checking out...plus, they've got a blog . download: or, the whale - call and response [...]

i know it's raining today, gang, and it's supposed to continue raining up to and possibly through tomorrow, but you mustn't let it hold you back. because tonight there's a show at the rickshaw stop you absolutely do not want to miss. local acts port o'brien (oakland) and or, the whale (recently named s.f. weekly's 2007 best alt-country band) will combine alternative folk rock forces with a.g. favorites and seattle natives the cave singers for an absurdly affordable 10$. you can (and by can, of course, i mean should) pick [...]
Here's the stuff we talked about. Your 33 Black Angels - Sue Your 33 Black Angels - Town and Country Rue Royale - U.F.O. Rue Royale - Parachutes and Lifeboats O'Death - Down to Rest O'Death - All the World Glen Hansard - Say It To Me Now Or, the Whale - Call and [...]

We're nearing the end of the year and my subconscious has been starting to compile the top albums of 2007. As I scrolled through the bands in my iPod, I passed by Or, the Whale and realized that I've never mentioned them on HearYa. Since it's one of the best albums I've heard this year, it's time to give them some praise. Light Poles and Pines is the debut album by San Francisco's Or, the Whale and it's a peach of an album. It was recommended to me by Adrian at I Pick My [...]

(Photo by Amanda Lopez ) I still have not found a good way to talk about how much i love the new Okkervil River album beucase so many "critics" have already done a pretty good job of beating you over the head with how amazing it is. While i sit here and continue to learn the lyrics and count down the days until fun fun fun fest , I can't praise California Bay Area Or, the Whale enough. Their debut full [...]

( source of the title - it's not from Moby Dick) Just a note: I've been packing and finishing house-type projects for the past few days because I'll be leaving for Oberlin on Saturday (the joy of the 9-hour drive!). I'm seriously looking forward to getting back to Obie-land, where hippies and hipsters roam free in their natural habitats. The posting will be sketchy for the next 5 or 6 days, but stick with me - things should get back to normal by next Tuesday. There's no lack of bands I'd like [...]

It is weird how it works. Sometimes you stumble upon a band, sometimes they seek you out and occasionally, you have mutual friends that put you in touch. The third scenario is how I became aware of San Francisco's Or, The Whale . I was introduced to them last fall and have been a fan of their hybrid of indie rock and country ever since. They have recently released Light Poles and Pines . The band is supporting this excellent CD with a US tour. They are on the road now and they'll be in the region over [...]
I Pick My Nose , once again, puts together a great mix of tunes. I particularly dig Adrian's pick, "Call and Response" by Or, the Whale. I downloaded the full album on eMusic and it's a great listen from top to bottom. Adrian : Or, the Whale - Call and Response Oh man, I just can't get past this song. I'll put on Lights Poles and Pines (which I talk about here) meaning to listen to the album, but I'll sort of stutter at this song. It's something about [...]

promo shot There has been some talk about SF band Or, the Whale ( myspace ), but it wasn't until Lindsay from the band (who I'm guessing get their name from the full title of the Melville book Moby Dick or, the Whale ) emailed me a little bit ago that I finally got around to listening to them. A few days later I had their full, debut album Light Poles and Pines . I'm not sure what I expect, but it [...]

Editor's Note: This post was written by Ben Thorne of San Francisco's Low Red Land . It is part of a series of posts that the band will be writing for the site today. At the bottom of the page, you can find the links to the rest. one of the more exciting and rewarding aspects of being in a band, is the people we meet through playing shows. there are a lot of good people in good bands playing in this city, and i feel fortunate [...]
