Please enjoy this clip of the fine Scottish pop outfit Orange Juice playing "Rip It Up" in honor of their impending reunion, which will take place when the band—and lead singer Edwyn Collins, who suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2005—is honored by the UK music-therapy outfit Nordoff-Robbins in Scotland next month. The whole idea of Collins even playing music again seemed like a very distant possibility three years ago, and this is kind of an amazing coda to his recovery. Also, Collins' piece for The Guardian about his therapy , and how it was aided [...]

Orange Juice, a Glaswegian* post-punk band, not only play good music, but they play it flippin' well. Regular readers will know that if I don't consider a band to be true musicians, they're out of the picture. Luckily for Orange Juice, I believe them to be full of musicianship. As always, it's nice to hear some instruments besides the typical guitars and drums line-up. It's not just the instrumentation that's original: the vocals, especially on "L.O.V.E.... Love" are... original, not to be too rude. Some may call them Bowie-esque, but personally I think they're just a bit strange. They don't [...]

Finally saw Hallam Foe yesterday, an excellent film set in Edinburgh. It's quite fun, sitting down watching films and recognising your (adopted) home town in places recognising many of the sights. And as usual, a story that is very different from your own life. Dark in places, but very funny in others. Very much worth checking out. And if you didn't want to see it, just because the last time you saw Jamie Bell he was in Billy Elliott , then shame on you! An excellent soundtrack, not all scottish indie, but three [...]

When I was stuck at my grandma's house a couple weeks back, I unearthed my well-worn copy of the 4th edition of the Trouser Press Record Guide . It was published in 1991, just before the alternative rock scene went mainstream. In those days before information on obscure indie and punk bands was a mere Google search away, the Guide was an invaluable resource when it came to deciding which albums and artists to keep an eye out for at the local record shops. There was a time (back when I rode the Christian Herter [...]

For some reason I seem to have become OBSESSED with Orange Juice recently?! Don't know if it's the fact I've been listening to a lot of new wave compilations they keep cropping up on but I can't get ' Rip It Up ' off my ipod. This seems to be coming across in dj sets as well with Rip It Up having found a second home in my record bag! Orange Juice - Rip It Up Check out this article on Edwyn Collins [...]
Mrs V has asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone for all the nice things you all said last week. We had as good a time imaginable in Venice. It was Mrs V's first visit to the city, and the last time I had been there...well it was quite a while ago when I was just a young hopeless romantic doing the student inter-rail thing with the backpack. So it was entirely different this time round.

The olympics in Beijing have been a huge, and unprecedented in the modern age, success for British athletes. Winning 19 gold medals and finishing fourth in the medals table significantly exceeded expectations and gives the UK hope for the 2012 olympics in London. The Beijing olympics will be remembered for many things the amazing record breaking performance of Bolt, the 8 gold medals of Phelps, the incredible cycling of Chris Hoy and the bravery of Shanaze Reade, the endurance of Kenenisa Bekele, the GB coxless four powering their way to gold. I'll also remember it for [...]

Hey kids. Today was a long one. Got to work a half-hour before opening to prepare for a big storewide sale, and just walked into Nicci's place five minutes ago. Some of the discounts were larger than my normal employee discount, so I bought a handful of records that I'd been holding onto for a few weeks. Superfuzz Bigmuff , a Steve Reich record, the first Saints album ( I'm Stranded ), and a bunch of seven-inch records (Big Black's Il Duce , Minutemen's Paranoid Time , two Flying Saucer attack 7"s and a Tortoise 7"). All [...]
Insomnia is a terrible thing, but if you're going to suffer, you might as well turn your bleary-eyed, twitchy lemons into musical lemonade. That's why, last night, somewhere between an optimistic 2:00am and a cranky, defeated 4:30am, I made my girlfriend another mix. The reason is simple. Rebecca is leaving her job, and this, my friends, is a VERY good thing. For Rebecca hates her job. Loathes it. And now, she gets to walk away. Tossing her "I live for caffeine" coffee mug into the trash and tearing down the "Get Fuzzy" cartoons off her beige [...]

A few months back, I asked readers if they would like to support a charitable cause - if you need your memory jogged, you can simply click here. I'm delighted to say that a good number of you did come back and made donations, and in return I sent out some hand-crafted Orange Juice CDs. There was also a donation made direct to the charity by my young brother, and by the time I totalled
From January 1982. It reached the giddy heights of #63 in the Uk pop charts. This is the sound of happiness. On a double A side 7" single. I really don't think I need say anymore.... mp3 : Orange Juice – Felicity mp3 : Orange Juice – In A Nutshell Some OJ footage is over at The Video Villain.
Dear Yum! Brands & Pizza Hut, Last evening (Thursday May 29th, 2008) I had a very upsetting experience involving one of your franchise's locations in Los Angeles, California. I feel it is my responsibility to inform you about what happened, and I will try to do so as objectively as possible. For your consideration: Allow me to set the scene. A small group of clean-cut, polite, Caucasian twentysomethings have gathered to watch the season finale of their favorite television program ( LOST , airs Thursdays at 9:00pm EST - 10:00pm PST on ABC). The consensus opinion [...]

I awoke to the sound of my alarm clock as it struck 9:00am. Last night was another night of deep, dreamless sleep, only without the benefit of awakening refreshed and ready to greet the day. Although I longed to roll over and return to wherever the fuck my consciousness escapes to when I sleep, my desire to keep all the plans I've made this week got the best of me, and I instead rolled out of bed and threw on some clothes. My mother yelled to me from downstairs to declare she had made breakfast for me, and asked if [...]
Gist - Greener Grass The Specials - Raquel Orange Juice - Blue Boy I was digging around the old iTunes '80s playlist this morning and came across something I had forgotten I had - the NME C81 compilation. Originally a cassette only release, it was given away free with two coupons and £1.50. Compiled by the NME and Rough Trade Records, it contained a a great array of acts and styles, both

Numerically speaking, 45 is royalty. The seven-inch 45 rpm vinyl disc is the medium that delivered rock & roll (arguably in its golden age) to millions of teenagers in the '50s and '60s. The sight of a spinning 45 was an iconic image even before it appeared in the opening moments of Happy Days , which, along with American Graffiti , persists in coloring my mental picture of 1950s. So popular and ingrained is the retro cool of the 45 that a slew of strange bedfellows, like Morrissey and Ricky Skaggs, have recently issued new collections of old [...]
