Sphongle After an electric night one of Moogfest we were eager for Saturday's festivities. With the first artists hitting the stage around 7PM we had ample time to enjoy all that Asheville had to offer. We had two goals for our time around town. First: sample the local craft beer and second: visit the Moog Factory. [...]

The walk between Moogfest' s U.S. Cellular Center and the much more intimate Orange Peel is approximately 18 minutes. Not too bad in festival terms, and instead of battling the hoard during that time, the hike is better spent grabbing a handmade crepe, petting some puppies, watching a few buskers, indulging in some fine chocolates, and/or sharing some stories over a microbrew with a local. Okay, so maybe the walk can end up taking closer to an hour. That is part of the charm around Asheville. Void of the chains that clutter most downtown skylines, Asheville runs at its own [...]

all photos by Brittany Brassell Thursday night, history visited Decibel Festival. UK electronic pioneers Orbital came to the Paramount Theatre and dazzled us with their game-changing sound. Even so many years after their debut, Orbital can still tear the roof off. Between the bonkers light show and their waves and waves of sound, the Halcyonic showcase was one of the best electronic shows the Paramount has seen in some time. Paul Chambers began the night with an upbeat and fun set of dance music, blending [...]

Ambient music may not be your EDM culture answer all the time, but when it's right it's right. Have you heard of British band Marconi Union? "Pure aural bliss" is what they do and they do it so damn well that scientists have actually dubbed it the most relaxing tune in the history of man. No really, apparently the song was played to 40 women and they all found it more coma inducing than the sleepiest of sleepyheads, Enya, Mozart and Coldplay. The song relaxes thy self by way of a 60 BPM rhythm and specific tones and [...]

This week we keep everyone entertained and busy. The week starts with Tegan & Sara at Neptune Theatre on Monday night, and then with Rose's Pawn Shop, Tumbleweed, and Wanderers at Tractor Tavern on Tuesday night. Then, things get crazy with 5 straight days of Decibel Festival. This is Seattle's Annual festival of electronic music, performance, visual art and new media and you can catch shows all over town. Even though Decibel invades Seattle, there are some other notable shows this week. A highly anticipated show with Grouplove and Alt-J at Moore Theatre on Wednesday, Bloc [...]

The sun is shining here in the final days of a gorgeous Seattle summer, and that means Decibel Festival is almost here! I'm starting to get pretty excited about hitting up a bunch of this year's shows. As a lifelong Orbital fan, I couldn't miss their upcoming set on Sept. 27th at the Paramount--I was lucky enough to catch them at a major British outdoor festival almost a decade ago, and they blew me away. As for more recent acts, I'm also looking forward to checking out Keyboard Kid, Star Slinger, Mimosa, and Baths. If you're in Seattle [...]

Although belated this review is a necessity. If you're in Berlin in September, Berlin Music Week is a must. Describing the city of Berlin isn't a hard task if you're here for a week of music. They live and breathe partying and when they have their biggest music week in town they definitely don't leave any stone unturned. To say we were excited is an understatement. Leaving Outlook Festival in Pula, and traveling north 1200km en route to Berlin was not a minute task, as we had to travel across 5 countries, the majority in German, [...]

So I've posted some Orbital tracks a couple times over the past few weeks, and I've noticed a curious trend: Every time I've posted a track of theirs, our lovely Hype Machine page that's meant to archive everything we post for the fine people there to listen to, has completely missed them out every time! So today I'm going to do a little experiment, to see whether the old Hype Machine just doesn't like Orbital. Starting much like every week does with [...]

Bringing up Warp's unique take on tat early 90's techno sound got me listening to other tech stuff I have from around that time, mostly 1993-1992. Warp's "Electronic Listening Music" as they call it is undoubtedly my favourite, but it's nice to see the roots and progression within the genre, and how it relates to the electronic scene as a whole today. Opening the proceedings is a tune I only just barely remember from my youth (mostly because of the mental music video [...]
Filed under: News , Video , Holy Hell , Music Appreciation youtube The London Olympics closing ceremony might have given us The Who and a reunited Spice Girls , but the opening ceremony for the London Paralympics Games has given us something far more awesome -- a spoken word collaboration between physicist mega-mind Stephen Hawking and techno veterans Orbital that somehow becomes a joyous medley with [...]
London knows how to run opening ceremonies.
Espectacular..... Transform our perceptions?

The opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Paralympics took place in London yesterday, and featured seminal UK electronic duo Orbital performing their new song, "Where Is It Going?" The track samples Stephen Hawking, who appeared on stage with Orbital as a team of dancers transformed Stratford's Olympic Stadium into the Large Hadron Collider . Orbital mashed their song up with a group of disabled musicians doing an awe-inspiring cover of Ian Dury and the Blockheads’ “Spasticus Autisticus” . Sir Ian McKellen among many others danced along side, and presented something that's pretty much one hundred times [...]
The Gardai have been waving their batons at so-called ‘electric music’ this summer – but Stradbally is no Phoenix Park , and thankfully the Picnic is free of numbskull stadium house. As always, the Picnic dance line-up is a proper jumble sale, taking in all manner of beats and bleeps over the three days. Here’s a few acts to tick off with the highlighter pens. Pat Mahoney (Little Big Stage, Sunday, 7-8pm) / The Juan Maclean (LBS, 8-9pm) / James Murphy (LBS, 9-10.45pm) It’s a bit of a cheat picking this three-in-one, [...]
The Olympics may be over, but the Paralympics, in which the human spirit regularly triumphs over even greater odds, is just getting started in London. And last night, in a spectacle to rival anything Danny Boyle came up with, the legendary dance duo Orbital performed their recent track "Where Is It Going?" with Stephen Hawking, the theoretical physicist whose electronic voice they sampled on the track, while a group of dancers impersonated the Hadron Collider. And they also mashed the song up with a group of disabled musicians, in a pretty amazing display of punk-rock defiance, covering Ian Dury And [...]

Band reunions: they're a dicey business, as far as fans are concerned, because they risk tarnishing the memory of the band in question's glory days. Sometimes they do exactly that, but occasionally a band get back together and make a record that's as good — or sometimes actually better — than their back catalog. Such records are few and far between, but one of them came along this week: Researching the Blues , the new studio album by the recently reunited Redd Kross. In celebration of that band's return, we thought we'd have a look [...]
