Orcas is the collaborative project of Benoît Pioulard and The Sight Below. In January we were introduced to Orcas , the free trade agreement between Benoît Pioulard and Rafael Anton Irisarri. ( A recent interview finds Irisarri admitting, "Collaborations are usually terrible," so at least we didn't have to say it.) On "Arrow Drawn", Benoît Pioulard sings, "I never ever cared about your real name/So never tell them your real name," hinting at a de-centered and remote subjectivity. It's an apt description of the music of Orcas : distant, elusive, and de-centered. The band plays right into this characterization on Orcas , titling one of their ambient soundscapes that pass for songs "Certain Abstractions". Moving yet further away from his Dubstep roots, XI (or one half of Loetech alongside Bombaman) recently released his new 123, 'Immunity' b/w 'Squeeze' for the nascent Orca imprint. The two tracks featured on the release focus on the darker end of the disjointed Garage/Funky sounds, spacing the production out to let things breathe a bit.
