Orchestra Baobab 's Pirates Choice is easily one of my all-time favorite albums, and seasonally speaking, it's the perfect compliment to a lazy summer day in the sun. Afro-cuban rhythms, floating clear-toned guitars, and beautifully harmonized words that you can't even begin to understand all wash together in a heady and calming wave of inescapable contentment.
The Very Best are a deliciously odd trio. The band formed more than four years ago, after DJ Gods Johan Karlberg and Etienne Tron of Radioclit met Esau Mwamwaya after buying a bike at Mwamwaya's used furniture/junk store in East London. In 2008, the group released a mixtape, Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit are the Very [...]

Ainda assim, deixem-me fazer a brincadeira

Tabu Ley Rochereau "Kelya" - mp3 Thanks to Cem for turning us on to this gem of a record from African vocalist Tabu Ley Rochereau . Released earlier this year, the double disc Voice of Lightness (Stern's Africa) spans Rochereau's career and touches all the major high marks. On the back of similar African records we've been loving this year, (Nigeria Special, Orchestra Baobab, Nigeria 70, Tinariwen etc...) Voice of Lightness may take the cake as one of the best we've come across. More info below... "The Tabu Ley set is [...]

Tickets €30 on sale Thurs Aug 7th @ 9am. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =g1qknbe0QtI This West African institution established itself in the 70s as the leading outfit in Dakars thriving music scene, idolised for their languid grooves, sophisticated arrangements and soaring vocalists. Pfff... jalousie, jalousie. Pour ma part, j'ai [...]

ORCHESTRA BAOBAB (Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukie) There is a connective tissue that bonds people of African descent across bodies of water, but its one fashioned by work and wounds, not genetics. So when Africa is heard in the Americas, as in the resurrected 70s Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab, its because someone carried, preserved, and reworked a tradition in a new space. Baobabs mostly middle-aged members continue to generate the culturally, harmonically and rhythmically dense hip-rockers that once charmed off-duty Senegalese government officials at Dakars Baobab Club and heavily influenced the world music scene since their mid-80s sabbatical. [...]

So Orchestra Baobab just came through town, and I read a review that was so over the moon about the show that I had to investigate. And hey guess what! Great band! As you know, my chi is weak when it comes to non-Western music, but I'm starting to climb the ladder. The bottom rung tells me that Cuban music became popular in western Africa in the mid-20th century. (This tidbit and much more can be found in the fascinating Orchestra Baobab biography at allmusic.) Monday jam! 1982, comin' at ya! [...]

In 1987, the British label World Circuit released one of their most legendary recordings, Pirate's Choice - originally recorded in 1982 on four track tape - and in 2001 the record was released with bonus songs to Europe and the States sparking a major interest in the band. The Graboid is back once again this week, and thankfully, on it's regularly scheduled day of the week. Lots of great albums this week including new releases from The Wedding Present , Mates of State , French Kicks , and Islands . I checked out a few tracks from Scarlett Johansson's much publicized album of Tom Waits covers, and damn...this is not good at all. Not that i've been hearing a lot of good press in regards to it in the first place, but I still wanted to see [...]
