As London venues go, The Roundhouse is pretty iconic. Once a Victorian repair shed for steam engines, this elegant industrial building now functions as a thriving multimedia arts venue and provides a dramatic space for live music, with a 3,000 plus capacity. The elaborate metalwork that shoulders the building creates a decorative and apt frame for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD)'s Friday night performance. Following Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ’s show at the Regency Ballroom Friday evening, no one could claim that that frontman-bassist Andy McCluskey was phoning it in. English Electric was a British engineering company whose origins predate those of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark by 60 years. Chosen as the title for OMD’s second comeback album, following on from 20102s History of Modern , it reflects the man and machine exposition that the UK band has successfully worked over past years. There is something regretful in the title as English Electric the company is long gone; bloated by mergers and absorbed by takeovers, an early technology business that ultimately fell short of its aspirations.
