We've been listening to a good bit of African music in the new year; Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, Ghana and Nigeria Special compilations and Fela Kuti with Ginger Baker are all incredible records. I've previously mentioned The Peelies and Futurebirds, if you haven't downloaded FB's free EP , I recommend it. Mazes, Alex Bleeker, Rainbow Bridge, Twin Sister, The High Wire, Crayon Fields, Holiday Shores, The Cave Singers and Allo, Darlin' have dominated our speakers for the past month. If you dig the music, please sample and support these artists. MAZES [...]

Making a best of list has been considerably harder for 2009. First things first, together with Can we've dug an immense amount of vintage Brasilian music, lots of easy listening, old soul/funk/disco gems and the quality on most of these records put 2009 music to shame. Face it, you can't keep up with João Donato, Yma Sumac, Piero Umiliani, Prince Buster etc. I haven't listened to Grizzly Bear, Mumford & Sons, Mos Def, Natural Snow Buildings and lots of other stuff seen on mainstream lists. Try as I might I couldn't get into [...]

Belle & Sebastian "Slow Graffiti" (BBC session version) Ten years ago, this song could kill me. Nowadays, it just sorta maims. The thing is, I'm not entirely sure why. I have not ever, at any point in my life, directly related to the song's protagonist, though his plight certainly taps into some of my own worst fears. At the start of the song, he's imagining a portrait of himself twenty years into the future. The lyric then shifts to a first person account of a man passively slumping through a dull life in which he tends [...]
