I recently went to pick up Donald Byrd's Places And Spaces album, one of my favorite fusion Jazz albums of all time. Luckily I found a second hand 123 in decent conditions at the record store down the street from my place. After listening to it a couple of times, I decided it would be more than appropriate to dedicate this week's Sample Sundays to the best track on the album, Wind Parade as it has been sampled in a bunch of very classic rap tracks. enjoy. Wind Parade - Donald Byrd [...]

Hands down, one of the more overlooked acts of the early-to-mid 1990s was Organized Konfusion. The Queens-based duo of Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po recorded two of the best and most slept-on albums of the decade in Organized Konfusion and Stress: The Extinction Agenda . The latter album was host to a slew of strong material, most notably "Stress," which Monch discusses in the above interview with Distortion 2 Static . He particularly touches on the track's killer visuals, which you can check out below. I have always felt like Organized Konfusion was due for a [...]

Between points Pharoahe Monch took deep breaths, in part due to his asthma, but like his lyrics, it was clear he wanted to carefully think through each point. Pharoahe Monch has always been creatively thoughtful with his lyrics, once rapping from the prospective of a bullet to elicit the history of gun violence. After over twenty years in hip hop, first making a name for himself as one half of Organized Konfusion, one might expect Pharoahe Monch would be more popularly known at this point. His debut album in 1999, Internal Affairs , was released on the [...]

There once was this Zen master sitting on a small stone bench, studying his small Japanese rock garden... There are only five rocks in the master's garden. Each was chosen for its individual perfection, as well as its unique relationship to the other stones. One day a visitor comes to the garden. The visitor steps slowly around the tiny space, contemplating the rake-grooved gravel and the stones. Eventually the visitor turns to the Zen master and exclaims, "It is perfect." The Zen master shakes his head solemnly and says, "No, it will be perfect when there are only [...]
