Geo·dissonance: the metal movement is proliferating to all corners of the globe. In its relentless display of vitriolic truths and the ugliest questions of existence, we can hear the resounding riffs of heavy metal in the most conservative pockets of society. As your Punjabi, riff-worshiping correspondent, I've created Geodissonance to report the controversy: as metal ...
The Middle East is a perpetual presence in world affairs - at the time of writing, the ceasefire between Syria's government and rebel forces rests on a knife edge , Egypt's first truly free presidential elections in decades is already mired in controversy , and the ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran continue to prove inconclusive . It's against this background of uprising and upheaval that Jon Kerr offers up this week's Spotify Slaylist as a "horns-up" to all our Middle Eastern metal brethren. While many metal bands originating from the [...]
IIT Guwahati's cultural festival, Alcheringa 2012, has the unique distinction of sounding like an impressively rare disease (according to some people), but it is also unique because it holds the distinction of being one of the biggest college festivals in India. It is, therefore, a good place to be at or around if you wish to have some fun in Guwahati this weekend. The festival is a four-day affair and will commence on Thursday, Feb 2. It will feature a host of big name artists including the talented Anoushka Shankar (pictured) who will be playing renditions of [...]
Because we have a video of a lady belly dancing to Orphaned Land. Enjoy: -AR Thanks to Andrew Robbins for the clip!

Since summer and, thus, summer festivals are almost upon us, I thought I'd take a closer look at Sonisphere, one of the biggest European music festivals. Mostly because I wanted to do some research on it, since it's the only festival in which I am indulging this year. Probably. (Note: I don't much like festivals, [...]
When I interviewed Kobi Farhi, vocalist for the Israeli metal band Orphaned Land, last year, he had some really interesting things to say about the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians: he claimed that Orphaned Land "has a legion of Arab fans," some of whom "have been thrown in jail" for liking a Jewish band. [...]

Israeli metal act Orphaned Land played the Bangalore stop of their India tour last week at the Kyra Theatre. With about 350 punters in attendance, Indian metal acts Inner Sanctum and Eccentric Pendulum opened proceedings. Swedish metal band Degradead also featured on the bill. The Judeo-Arabic influenced sound went over well with the fans that were for the most part familiar with the material and chanting along with vocalist Kobi Farhi. The gig also happened to coincide with drummer Matan Shmuely's birthday. A cake was brought out on stage and everyone sang 'Happy Birthday,' prompting Farhi to remark, [...]

Ben [...]
Mazel tov to reader Noah Mezsick, who correctly identified the first night of Hanukkah's trivia question - yes, Orphaned Land's Kobi Farhi is the poor musician that I accidentally introduced to frum porn earlier this year. I hear he's had nightmares ever since. I apologize, Kobi! In any case, Noah wins a mystery prize courtesy of Century [...]
So last week some worthless human tampon stole a couple of guitars from Kataonia. And even though we all knew that the joke was the thief or thieves, since our main man Anso made sweet, sweet love to those instruments, we were pretty peeved about it. Luckily, the guitars were recovered last week, according to [...]
Even some douche bag stealing their shit can't stop Katatonia's MetalSucks-sponsored "New Night Over North America 2010″ tour, which is roughly at the halfway point. That means that if you live in California, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Kentucky, or Virginia, you have not yet blown your chance to see one of Sweden's finest exports [...]
"We can't believe this," Katatonia frontman Jonas Renkse announced between songs at their sold-out NYC show this past Friday, the third stop of their MetalSucks-sponsored U.S. tour with Swallow the Sun and Orphaned Land. "Flying all the way across the ocean to play for a sold out crowd in New York City... this is our [...]
Katatonia's MetalSucks-sponsored "New Night Over North America 20103 tour kicks off today! Featuring support from the always-excellent Swallow the Sun and Orphaned Land, the Swedish metal legends' latest trek is guaranteed to be a killer time. And to celebrate, MetalSucks is teaming up with Peaceville Records and Omerch to give away a Mayones guitar played [...]
Katatonia are awesome, and we're pretty awesome, so when they were like, "We're gonna do this awesome North American tour with two other awesome bands, Swallow the Sun and Orphaned Land, do you wanna sponsor it?", we were like, "AWESOME!" And thus it was so. And now the band has released an awesome trailer for the [...]
Earlier this year I got to attend a pretty kick-ass Orphaned Land gig here in NYC; well, Team Metal Injection was there in full-force, too, and did what they do best, which is smoke weed and get drunk. And, oh yeah, the captured some awesome performance footage of the show, too. For example, check out [...]
The last time I saw Katatonia was a truly unforgettable night, a Scandinavian metal boner-fest to be sure: they played New York City along with Swallow the Sun, Insomnium and Scar Symmetry. I also picked up my beloved Insomnium t-shirt, which I still get questions about ("When did Insomnium come to the U.S.?"). Truth is that [...]
