On Silversun Pickups 's latest and third album, the LA band shaves the fuzz of their guitars in favor of a more brooding, heavily electronic sound. You can pick up Neck of the Woods and a handful of other new albums out this week, including the second studio album from Kingston, Ontario duo PS I Love You , which according to our Music Director, Don Yates, is another impressive blend of energetic post-punk and anthemic garage-rock with loud, ringing guitars, muscular rhythms, yelping vocals and punchy song hooks." For a taste of their rocking sound, check [...]

Orpheum Bell have become our favourite 'Country & Eastern' artists! They deftly and elegantly mix classic Americana with gypsy rhythms plucked from travelling carnivals and vaudeville sideshows to create something that is in equal parts melancholic, seductive and sometimes a little bit dangerous. We've already posted two tracks from their latest album The Old Sisters' Home and here is a third, the ukelele led Whatever Shines So Bright is a cautionary tale of temptation featuring the playful duet between Katie Lee's high lonesome soprano and Aaron Klein's seductively gruff voice. The Old [...]

We recently posted Orpheum Bell's track Poor Laetitia, describing it as Gypsy Americana or Country & Eastern music. It came from their scheduled new album The Old Sister's Home , due May 8th and the band have made a new song available for free download. Daddy's Crying is, as you might expect, a melancholy lament accompanied by suitcase pump organ, shepherd harp, oboe, violin and french horn. Over nearly six minutes it recounts the story of two brothers caring for each other during troubled times for their father, mixing the sweetly sorrowful vocals [...]

The Old Sister's Home is Orpheum Bell's most ambitious CD to date (it's third!) with an eclectic style mixing folk, country, Eastern, and even a hard-driving song sung in Russian. "Poor Laetitia" opens things up with a stomping tango beat, featuring clattering banjo and muted trumpet: Klein’s gritty, sneering vocal is supported by the wailing harmonies of Katie Lee and Jennie Knaggs. Orpheum Bell is now planning to tour the US to support The Old Sister’s Home and eying a European tour for 2013. The first tourdate on tap is - 03/09/12 at the Trinity [...]

Defining and describing the sound of Orpheum Bell is a tricky task. There is some Eastern European folk in there for sure, but equally they have a classic Country thing going on too. Country & Eastern? Gypsy Americana perhaps? Whatever, these are mere labels. What matters is the music and on new album The Old Sisters' Home , their particular blend is a heady, intoxicating brew with vocals hewn from the Tom Waits stable and backed by tunes that sound as if they belong in smoky back-rooms and dusty, darkened theatres. Taster track [...]

Imagine for a second Gogol Bordello but slowed down to a crawl. Imagine each of their songs but not fueled by rampant punk energy. Instead imagine slow rich ballads and duets but still inspired by the gypsy music of the Balkans and points East. If you've got that picture in your mind's eye than you have an approximation of the lush sound of the Ann Arbor band Orpheum Bell whose music coined the phrase "Country & Eastern". The band celebrates the release of its sophomore release, Pearls , over the [...]
I wish I was... in Carrickfergus ? No : Ann Arbor, Michigan. Without a doubt, the Great Lakes would be my musical preferred state. With Misty Lyn , Matt Jones - I'm eagerly awaiting for their debut albums - Chris Bathgate , Sam Corbin , Great Lakes Myth Society and since these last few months, Orpheum Bell ... my list of michigan's favorites is getting longer. I've bought Orpheum Bell, first full length at the essential cdbaby.com a minute [...]
Thanks to my hip friend Greta, I recently saw the band Orpheum Bell play a few sets at Detroit's famous Cadieux Cafe (which is, incidentally, one of my favorite local purveyors of Belgian beer). Orpheum Bell describe their sound as "Country and Eastern," as in Eastern Europe. Aside from being clever, the C & E slogan accurately describes their mish-mash of musical styles (one part twang, one part gypsy, one party sultry, and one part gruff). Orpheum Bell's impressive list of instruments played well includes accordion, banjo, guitar, fiddle, clarinet, autoharp, double bass, mandolin, [...]
