The Orwells are some young rockers from suburban Chicago. Maybe not be as young as these promo shots suggest, but young all the same. I don't have much to go on with these guys, but it's pretty impressive how quickly their sound is maturing and evolving. Compare the stuff on their MySpace page to their most recent full-length , Oh! Let's get this out of the way immediately: French outfit Orwell do like their soft pop. Continental, their third album, follows the well-worn tracks of Brian Wilson, Harry Nilsson and lost genius Bergen White, plus the modern chamber pop sounds of fellow Gallic outfits Air, Tahiti 80 and Phoenix. This means lots - and I mean lots - of synth and electro sounds, soldered to jaunty acoustic guitars and percussion. Everything and the kitchen sink. Yesterday discovered this wonder Garage kids by pure accident and the first thing that came out of my head was "The Sonics", that's how good they are. The Orwells are a bunch of young kids from Elmhurst Illinois and make a brutal and raw sound that would sound like a better and raw version of the Strokes. Their 2010 second album "Oh! Well" is a brilliant Garage revival where you can easily spot loads of influences from The Stooges to The Velvet Underground and even some high and low's nineties characteristic riffs from the alternative juice bands like [...]
