"Baby baby baby ohhh like, baby baby baby nooo like, baby baby baby..." Great pop songs have great hooks, and this is why Justin Bieber's "Baby" is one. In terms of great pop songs called "Baby", it's right up there with Os Mutantes, who gave us their very own in 1968. And if the chorus isn't catchy enough, check out Ludacris' backup vocals. "Yo, uh huh. Yo, uh huh." Yo, you know what I mean, dawg. Two great hooks for the price of none, right here on Youtube. Uh huh. - Song-Ming . [...]

Slowly but surely the temperature's dropping, and me no like at all. of Montreal's music is hard to define, given it changes more often than frontman Kevin Barnes' sequined and feathered outfits during a live show. One album might be heavy on the drum machine and synthesizer, while another showcases Barnes' best high-pitched Prince wail with more traditional strings and percussion. The Atlanta band boasts a prodigious [...]

It's been some time since I've posted on this blog and I am happy that topomodesto gave me the opportunity to put together a mix. In the face of algorithm driven mix generation I hope that there continues to be interest in crafting diverse listening experiences. What may start as a matter of convenience easily translates into common practice. Collecting and orchestrating music samples into coherent ideas may be perfected by professional dj's, but I find my interests don't take root until I search out the connections between songs and artists myself. And this invariably leads [...]
Of all of the disparate places modern pop music has its roots, Tropicália is one of the most often overlooked. Originated in 19602s Brazil, the movement was led by such luminaries as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil of legendary psych-rockers Os Mutantes, Tom Zé, and Gal Costa. Tropicália has been nodded to numerous times over the years, with everyone from Nelly Furtado, Kurt Cobain, and Beck noting their debt to the genre. Despite this, Tropicália's influence still goes, for the most part, very unsung today, remaining a well-kept secret of record collectors and music snobs the world over. Enter [...]

Narrated by Devendra Banhart. Start your love for the band with Everything is Possible: The Best of Os Mutantes a great primer compiled by David Byrne of The Talking Heads. Watch more awesome clips of the band over at Dangerous Minds.
Westerners tend to group Tamikrest into the "desert rock" movement, a vague and cinematically inclined term for music that would sound appropriate set under images of the Saharan desert, complete with tired camels and heat lines. The band hails from Mali, where about two-thirds of land is desert, so the grouping is at least geographically [...]

Beirut - "O Leaozinho" (Caetano Veloso cover) by znaki.fm Beirut, the music project headed by Zach Condon, is going on tour. Good news. He's going on tour with Arcade Fire, the National, and Twin Sister. Better news. He's also contributed a track to the Red Hot Organization's benefit album, Red Hot + Rio 2 : a cover of Caetano Veloso's classic Tropicalia ballad, "O Leãozinho." David Byrne was the one who brought this sweet, haunting love song to the American [...]
When one thinks of AIDS research, very rarely does the topic of Brazilian Tropicália music from the 1960s emerge. But the AIDS charity Red Hot put the two together back in 1996 for an album to benefit AIDS research and prevention and they're doing it again with the sequel, Red Hot + Rio 2 , which hits stores June 28th. The original compilation released back in 1996 featured tracks from Maxwell, PM Dawn, David Byrne, Everything but the Girl, and Stereolab, plus Brazilian artists Gilberto Gil, Astrud [...]

There are certain songs that float in your unconscious. They seem to weave through days, weeks, years of your life. Os Mutantes' "Baby" is one of those for me. And one of the oddest things is that the version I often come back to isn't the original. I also got sent an amazing cover of the tune by Gal Costa & Caetano Veloso (more on Gal Costa upcoming). So, without further ado some beautiful covers of Os Mutantes' extraordinary "Baby": The Original: [...]
Any Mutantes record is a mind-blower and this one makes an unforgettable introduction. The music and voice of Os Mutantes transcends any language barrier such that even the most literary of music enthusiasts can still fall deep for these dazzling sounds. David Byrne, who reissued an anthology of the Mutants on his Luaka Bop label, [...]
A few weeks ago, Greg Kot scooped everyone with news of three of Lollaplooza 20112s headliners . Now hot on the heels of news that Pitchfork Music Festival 2011 tickets going on sale on Friday , rumors of its line up are making their way around the interwebs. First off, Chicago Reader's Gossip Wolf claimed it has the scoop on this year's Pitchfork yesterday and named Superchunk as a headliner. Other acts said to be on the festival's bill, according to Gossip Wolf, are the newly reunited Dismemberment Plan (who just rolled through town [...]
