Os Mutantes soundchecking at Austin Psych Fest 2013 ( more by Tim Griffin ) Brazilian psychedelic pop legends Os Mutantes are still at it (they played Le Poisson Rouge in December and were just at Austin Psych Fest , but were interrupted by rain), and are one of the bands announced for the Celebrate Brooklyn! 2013 season at Prospect Park . Their show happens on June 29 with Brooklyn indie pop band Javelin and [...]

Capsula return to Seattle on Wednesday / photo by Christopher Nelson The weather is getting nicer in Seattle and the shows just keep getting better. Here are some of the highlights of the week: Tonight, Cloud Cult and JBM are at Neptune Theatre. Tuesday night, Alice Russell, Dice & The High Rollers, Mycle Wastman, and J-Justice are at Neumos. On Wednesday, Os Mutantes and Capsula are at Triple Door, and the BottleRock Napa Valley Festival starts in Napa Valley thru Sunday with some big headliners playing. On [...]
While American audiences were listening to the silky, unwrinkled delicates provided by the likes of Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert’s A&M label, Os Mutantes were exploring the darker side of Brazilian life. From the group’s very inception its founding members, Sergio Dias, his brother Arnaldo Baptista, and singer Rita Lee, have used music as a means of protest and revolution. Os Mutantes’ musical activism drew the ire of the Brazilian government, who sought to censor the group’s final official album (prior to reuniting), 1975’s E Seus Cometas No Pais Do Baurets, to the point of delaying [...]
Your very busy Thursday: ► The fifth annual Revolver Golden Gods Show brings Metallica , Five Finger Death Punch , Anthrax , Stone Sour , the Dillinger Escape Plan and Halestorm to Club Nokia for a sold-out night of hard rock. ► The Killers (that's their video for "Miss Atomic Bomb," above) join up with the Felice Brothers for a show at the L.A. Sports Arena. ► Canadian electro darling Lights brings her acoustic tour to the El Rey Theatre for a [...]

Week's Top Releases The Albums You Need to Know About Every Week Hey, guys! Hope this week's release day finds you well and ready to do some listening. I decided to (sort of) list the releases from oldest band to newest band this week, which takes us back to 1983 - the year indie rock vets Guided By Voices was formed. They've been in the game for thirty years now and are still creating relevant, really interesting music. Going even [...]

Whether you're feeling moody or in a mood to dance, you'll find what you need among this week's new releases. Topping the list of must-buys in record stores today comes from U.K. trio Daughter , who were a standout during our CMJ broadcast last year with their highly emotive and engaging performance . Our Music Director, Don Yates, calls If You Leave , their anticipated debut of "an often-moving set of dark, goth-tinged folk-pop," for its "haunting, atmospheric sound featuring melancholy reverbed guitars, stark percussion, smoky vocals and lovelorn lyrics." For something a bit more hip-shaking [...]

Os Mutantes are one of the zaniest bands in the history of rock'n'roll. The Brazilian veterans' latest release, Fool Metal Jack is the ultimate mixed bag, at times utterly frustrating and at others hilariously brilliant. [...]
GRAPHICS BY SARAH HEINEMANN Festival season is upon us, and it's time for my favorite one of them all, Austin Psych Fest. It's still a relative baby, only in it's sixth year, but boasts a line-up that proves it's here to stay. For the first time, the event is moving out of a traditional venue and into the great outdoors - Carson Creek Ranch to be exact. They now offer weekend-long camping, the perfect way to really soak up those psychedelic reverberations. Bands don't start until the afternoon, giving you time to recover each morning before diving [...]

photos by Kyle Johnson and Dave Lichterman Minneapolis band Poliça released their single "Tiff" from their upcoming album, and the song features Bon Iver's Justin Vernon . The track a synth pop dream - darkly lit by the echos of Vernon's voice in the background. [ Pitchfork ] When James Blake isn't working at James Blake, he does remixes as Harmonix - and he dropped a beautiful echo [...]

Spring has sprung, and I for one am ecstatic. I'm ready to shed my coat in favor of tank tops, and don strappy sandals instead of boots. But for some, spring's arrival isn't as welcome. It signals our slow-but-steady entry into 100+ degree temperatureland, and even the promise of sno-cones and watering holes can't subside that fear. Alas, there are some songs that just put me in a happy mood, giving me that extra spring in my step, in more ways than one. (Forgive me, they can't all be winners). I've got an upbeat playlist that's sure to help you [...]

The great Brazilian psychedelic band Os Mutantes returned from a 35-year absence in 2009 with their eighth LP, Haih . Now, they're set to release the follow-up to that one, Fool Metal Jack , with lyrics written almost exclusively in English. The breezy, bright track has a notable reggae influence - perhaps befitting its title - but its lyrics are ... kinda bizarre. As far as I can tell, it's a fable in which giants from American politics rise from the grave to correct our course via zombie revolution. A sample: Read More...

Brazilian psychedelic rock veterans Os Mutantes will release their ninth studio album, Fool Metal Jack , on April 30th via Krian Music Group. As frontman Sérgio Dias told SPIN , the follow-up to 20092s Haih... Or Amortecedor will showcase "a new side of the band" by capturing a "snapshot of America." Our first glimpse is with the album's haunting title track, which eschews the group's Portugese lyricism for an emphasis on the English language. Take a listen below. "There's so much more in an individual than just the [...]

Prior to his success as a solo artist, José González fronted the indie-rock band Junip during the late ’90s in his native country of Sweden, with the group releasing one EP before breaking up. Back in 2010, the singer-songwriter reunited with his former bandmates, releasing their critically-lauded full-length debut Fields that featured their highly enjoyable brand of psychedelic folk-rock act as filtered through Gonzalez's hazy, Nick Drake-inspired vocals. On April 23, the band will release their self-titled sophomore effort via Mute Records, and have lined up a 13-date North American [...]

Hype Hype Hooray is a biweekly “critique” of the music scene and the blogosphere that feeds it, told through the lens of Jamie Hale, a journalist who likes music about as much as he likes scotch and a firm leather chair. Please enjoy with a grain of salt. Hey guys, Jamie Hale here. You know, when I'm not penning hot blog posts about the indie music industry, I like to sit back and relax with a cool drink, a big pair of headphones, and an album from my favorite 1960s artistic movement, Tropicália You [...]
