We had the weekend to let Pitchfork's Greatest 200 Songs of the 1960's list sink in. Now, friends, is the time for the nitpicking to begin in earnest. For the most part I think it was a pretty good effort by the 'forkers. There were clearly great pains taken to expand the usual Rolling Stone magazine conventional wisdom, include underrespected genres, and oust some terrible Doors songs. Any attempt to assign rank and number to a decade's worth of music is going to be imcomplete, however. In calling to light some material that [...]

(Photo by Ana Carmen ) The name of this act rings a bell if only for the Tropicalia classic Bat Macumba. You see the resemblance? But what's a macumba when it's at home? Well, in the Brazilian context in which we dwell, macumba refers to any religion or ritual of African descent, broadened to include anything even remotely witchcraft or arcane-superstition-related. So where does that fit into the popular music canon? Well, Bat Macumba, originally by the heroically beardy Gilberto Gil and later covered magnificently by Os Mutantes apparently [...]

Innipúkinn um sÃðustu helgi var nær eintóm vonbrigði, Ghostigital og Mugison best. Ne nni ekki einu sinni að skri fa um hann. Morrissey var skÃnandi góður og hress. Fullkomin poppstjarna með frábæra sviðsframkomu. Skipulagið á tónleikunum var fáránlegt. Þeir sem áttu miða à stúku fengu sæti niðri á gólfi og þeir sem voru à stæði voru à stúkunni. Svo endaði það með þvà að þeir sem höfðu mætt fyrst á staðinn til að tryggja sér fremstu sætin niðri voru illa sviknir þvà einhverjum fokkings hálfvitum datt à hug að gefa skÃt à liðið sem sat prúðbúið og standa fyrir framan sviðið. Fólk tróð sér fyrir framan sviðið svo þeir sem fremst sátu sáu ekki neitt. [...]

I sadly regret to inform those of you who have been enjoying my San Francsico concert reviews that I had moved from Berkeley, CA to the little town of Ann Arbor, MI where I am starting to experience the dearth of quality live music. Compared to Ann Arbor , SF is nirvana for concert-goers like myself, where bands make an effort to swing by at least twice while on tour. Although I can still review the Detroit shows, I am currently lacking concert [...]

Play it: Os Mutantes - Best songs not on Everything is Possible (From their three first albums, reissued today) The landmark first three albums from Brazilian pychedelic superstars Os Mutantes see their reissue today, via Universal Music Latino (and Light in the Attic .) Fresh off of their triumphant reunited tour of the US (and show in London back in May,) it's fitting that these albums finally see an official release here in the states. I just wish [...]

It has been said that today's lineup at the Pitchfork Festival "could very well be the best day in the history of live music." Yeah, it was us that said that , but that's beside the point. The point is, original lineup or not, I get to see Os Mutantes today, so yay for me. Os Mutantes Ando Meio Desligado mp3 Here's a video of the band performing the song live at The Barbican Hall in London back in May.

Play it: Os Mutantes - Setlist 07/26/2006 Os Mutantes played last night at the Moore theatre , in their 4th show ever in the US (and their 5th since reuniting earlier this year.) They started their set with five more obscure songs (that is, not on their greatest hits US release - the David Byrne curated collection, Everything is Possible ,) which was a [...]
On Monday night I finally had a little pocket money to spare and decided to do the right thing, and go see Brazil's psyechedelic sound champs Os Mutantes. I had been eagerly waiting for my own opportunity since my friend Christine mentioned in an mail some months ago that she was gonna catch 'em in NYC. Well at first they were only scheduled to play two shows west of NYC, one being at Chicago's Pitchfork festival & a separate high profile gig at The Hollywood Bowl with The Flaming Lips. I pretty much had [...]
Here is the second half of our festival playlist. I can't decide which day I'm more excited for. This will be my first time seeing Spoon, so I'm leaning towards Sunday. I don't know much about Os Mutantes, but I've only heard good things. Lets be honest, I'm basically excited for every second of this event. One week and counting... Acho que nesse dia 13 de Julho não preciso dizer muito né? Todos já devem imaginar a importância que o Rock tem em minha vida... não só pelo fato de eu possuir um blog. Mas o rock é o maestro regendo minha vida...Um pouco de rock em um dia especial... 50’s Elvis Presley â€" His lastest flame Little Richard â€" The Girl Can’t Help It 60’s [...]
Songs for Feet Soles Worn Smooth by Sand and Hot Asphalt, (Run-On Sentence Int'l Postcard Pt Two), Part One Picture sent to me by my Winter Bee, oh so long ago. Tonight is another sweating monument to Summer, where I can feel the longing for mint juleps (powdered sugar mashed into bruised mint leaves, twisting between mini [...]

Play: The Free Design: The Now Sound Redesigned Play: The Free Design - The Redesigned Originals, Recorded by The Free Design (1967-70) As I posted last month , the record label Light in the Attic was recently added to Rhapsody, and as a result, we've seen a recent surge in music geek classics at our disposal. These two Free Design [...]

This, this is great. For You Can Call Me Betty's 100th post, I can sit here just in my shorts it's so hot, the football on the telly right next to me, and I get to post about Brazil. As football posts go, it doesn't get much more exciting: in the words of Mugatu, they're so hot right now - Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Adriano and, yes, Fred made the squad, the samba boys are still (as every year) the hottest property in football - I wish I could incoporate Ronaldinho's band in there, but try as I might, they're too busy [...]
