Last Thursday I sent C=T contributor, Charles Killsgworth, to cover one of the most iconic and relevant musical groups of our time, Os Mutantes . Photos and Word by Charles Killingsworth Reminiscent of Astrud Gilberto and Love, a reflection of 60's pop culture, bossa nova and psychedelic rock origins; Os Mutantes delivered a proper performance Thursday night at Cervantes Ballroom. Offering an education in sound, Sergio Dias, one of the original and founding members of Os Mutantes, arrived as the leader of a clan of outcast [...]

The Mutantes are back! After an unnecessarily long hiatus of three decades and then some, the legendary Brazilian ensemble comes blasting back again with a killer record. This group, pioneer in the ever-venerated Tropicalia genre, has revamped itself in lineup and sound on their eighth full-length to produce a revolutionary twist on everything that is Os Mutantes . The idea of a new album for a band that's been dormant for so long can be scary for fans: Will they just attempt to recreate the hits that made them glorious in the past? Will they step out of their [...]

Get out your Bumbershoot, it's raining! Of the past four years, this was my first Bumbershoot experience in the rain, which is pretty awesome, considering it's Seattle . This was my second year of the 3-day pass experience. Aside from the people in walking traffic that pause whenever they please, the Labor Day weekend is near perfection. (I could also happily go a few days without seeing any neon clad 14 year olds making out.) Not only was the rain a first for my Bumbershoot experience, but this was also the first year I [...]

HAIH OR AMORTECEDOR, OS MUTANTES Anti, Brazil Rating: 71 By Carlos Reyes Os Mutantes, the most celebrated band from our region comes back with a first album in 35 years! Ok, every single review of Haih or Amortecedor starts with this fact, but I guess us in particular should be jumping up and down for what could be the [...]

There are always about six or seven shows during Pop Montreal that I've marked down as must-sees (and generally end up missing, or just having enough time to catch two or three songs - sigh), and that's certainly the case this year. Matt & Kim ? Okay, no. I've never even heard a Matt & Kim song but something about their promo pictures has always prevented me from investigating any further. I find it hard to believe they're not secretly from a Vancouver suburb and that half of [...]

Holy mother of all reunion release weeks. Bands Polvo, Os Mutantes, Prefab Sprout and The Clean all release their first album in a loooong time. Polvo 12 years, Os Mutantes 35 years, the rest fall in between. If that weren't enough, there's also new releases from Vivian Girls, Yo La Tengo, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Health, Visqueen, BLK JKS, Sondre Lerche, a compilation of Damon and Naomi and the physical release of They Might Be Giants' latest kidtastic adventure. Normally, this would be a jam-packed thematic post with all kinds of passion but Bumbershoot happened, derailing most my [...]
Fuck Katy Perry and Sheryl Crow—I have rarely seen a band more suited for playing to soggy people on a sunny Saturday afternoon than Natalie Portman's Shaved Head. These party-rock synth kids got some damned lucky breaks to be playing for crowds this big, and they were appreciative, giving and smiley, their keyboardist-cum-bassist-singer wearing a Delicious Vinyl t-shirt and yachting cap like a man steering his hometown crowd towards the shores of Par-Tei. They did all the hits—at this point, they have nothing else to play—and after song after catchy song about sideways ponytails and Bis-esque beard lust, I realized [...]
It's the iconic Brazilian band's first record in more than 35 years, and on Haih or Amortecedor, Os Mutantes remain as bizarre and fun-loving as ever. Spinner is streaming the kaleidoscopic docume... Continue reading "Stream the New Record From Os Mutantes, Haih or Amortecedor" >
In so many ways, I shouldn't be qualified to talk about Os Mutantes. Their last album was released 10 years before I was born. Of course, by that logic I also shouldn't be qualified to talk about The Beatles, but I'm gonna do that later this week anyways. Yet unlike The Beatles, Os Mutantes haven't quite carved out a reputation as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Still, they did relatively well for themselves in the late 60's/early 70's psychedelia movement, enough to still generate plenty of word of mouth about their "reunion" back in 2006. Now [...]
I had just broken up with my high school/college girlfriend, and I was new on the dating scene. The only problem was, I went to a college roughly the same size as my high school. Once your peers knew you had a busted relationship, you were pretty much off limits to everyone on campus. I don't understand how that worked, but people who were broken up in college could only date other people who had broken up in college. Everyone else was too selfish, and they didn't want to be known as the person dating someone's ex-boyfriend or girlfriend. It [...]
NPR is streaming the first disc of the new Big Star box set, Keep an Eye on the Sky. AOL/Spinner is streaming the following albums through Sunday, September 13, so listen while you can. • Sondre Lerche, 'Heartbeat Radio' •...

"No, Os Mutantes , you are beautiful!" I thought this as the group's figurehead and lead singer Sérgio Dias humbly lavished praise on the happy audience. And to think that I'd almost given up on the show because of bad traffic! What great fortune if you, too, have had the privilege of experiencing Os Mutantes live. Melophobe caught up with the five-man, one-woman group at The Aladdin Theater on Wednesday night. They were between San Francisco and Seattle, sleep deprived and homesick for their beloved São Paulo, Brazil. Nevertheless, they put on the most spectacularly fun show [...]
Danko Jones' Never Too Loud is more of the same from the Canadian three-piece. It's good, but after listening to the album a couple times, it's become clear that Jones' sexual braggadocio is start... Continue reading "New releases, Tuesday, September 8" >

Bumbershoot 2009: Seattle, WA (09/05/09) Words and Photos : Drake Le Lane As promised, here is Drake 's recap from Day 1 of Bumbershoot 2009 : Bumbershoot's first day is in the books, and it couldn't have gone smoother. Weather threatened to dampen the day, with downpours through the morning, but as the gates opened, the clouds stayed at bay until well after De La Soul played their final note. Here's a few photos and brief review of each performance [...]
Bumbershoot's first day is in the books, and it couldn't have gone smoother. Weather threatened to dampen the day, with downpours through the morning, but as the gates opened, the clouds stayed at bay until well after De La Soul played their final note. Here's a few photos and brief review of each performance I managed to take in. Akimbo @ EMPSFM's Sky Church stage My day started late, but I made sure to get in for Seattle's hardcore superstars, and to bring my ear plugs. The riffs were loud [...]
Bumbershoot is the most diverse celebration of the arts, but it also marks the official end to summer music festivals, making it a bittersweet event. The thing that sets Bumbershoot apart from other festivals is its smorgasbord of flavors to taste from and to spend all your time taking in performances that you'd see at other festivals (ie, rock) kind of misses the point. Brazilian Tropicalia masters Os Mutantes (pictured), for instance, is playing on Saturday at 7:30 and is the one act that you should not miss. [...]
