picture by Chris Melgram Would you care to introduce yourself? Hello, my name is Reuben Quinn. I write and sing songs in Oscar Charlie. How would you describe the music you make? I grew up listening to a lot of stuff, mostly Frank Zappa and Paul Simon. Aretha too - I'd like to think that we sound [...]
With just a handful of tracks in my possession I think it is fair to say Oscar Charlie have kept me guessing since I first heard them at the start of this year. Hailing from the Shetland Isles, but recently relocated to Glasgow, the band's synth heavy songs weren't what I was expecting when I [...]

The Scottish music scene is undeniably city-centric. If a band isn't doing the rounds of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee or Inverness then, for many people, they might as well not exist. Yet that would mean missing out on a massive amount of talent, and that talent tends to avoid the derivative, scenestery, cliché-addled sound which often comes from being part of a much wider network. I am about a month behind now, but with the Xmas break coming up, I should be able to [...]

And as evinced by this absolute gem of a track, 'Vandals', they're going to go a lot further. There's a dark side to this synth-led track, in the lyrical content - there's references to graveyards and violence in here (at least from what I can make out; the band - that's Reuben Quinn (vocals, guitars), Jim Bevington (bass), John Gair (drums) and Jamie [...]
