One of Wes Anderson's best tools as a filmmaker is having the ability to weave the perfect song/score into his obsessively perfect scenes. The details behind the soundtrack of his newest film, Moonrise Kingdom has surfaced and if the thrilling trailer (below) hasn't made this an anticipated release, the soundtrack definitely will. Anderson will be blending music from Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic as well as French chanteuse Françoise Hardy and the great Hank Williams [...]
This Must Be The Place . [...]
And here's the best part: you're never quite sure which Matthew Collings will show up. There is his Sketches For Albinos project: a delicate, nostalgic, macro-lens union of piano and samples. There is the Convex Mancave collaboration with Chriz Tenz and Greyhound Out Of Mainline: a rambunctious, ultra-modern interpretation of noise and processing. And then there is the man himself: experimental composer, collaborator, and music philosopher/aficionado of the highest order. Add one more to that CV: film score composer. In early February, Collings announced his forthcoming OST for Hakon [...]

A few more albums to shortlist as I head off to vacate. I'm not doing the whole SXSW thing this year, unless you mean the acronym's alternate long-form: Strangled By Sea World. - Patience (After Sebald) OST by The Caretaker. (Thanks to John Harrison of Cedar Lines for the tip. Watch for our Cedar Lines profile in early April.) - Perceiving Perspective , by Pleq and Lauki . Two Maxwell advocates record a quite acoustic-sounding EP. -Forthcoming releases by Black Swan , Vieo Abiungo [...]

Another forthcoming soundtrack by Ólafur Arnalds. Not much intel yet. The best bet is still probably the Facebook page . This one could be pretty amazing: In 1944, Soviet forces occupied the Baltics for the second time. At the first occupation, 1940-41, the government offered no resistance and the Lithuanians had quickly learned the brutal lessons of Communism. This time, they decided to resist. Tens of thousands of young men and women from the villages, schools and universities took to the forests and formed a guerrilla movement, [...]
Swinging collection of ‘60s jet-age pop marred by contemporary covers The vintage picks on this fourteen-track set nicely conjure the ring-a-ding-ding jet-age culture of television’s Pan Am. Unfortunately, the inclusion of two contemporary cover versions reeks of marketing opportunism, and interrupts the vintage vibe of an otherwise finely programmed collection. Grace Potter and Nikki Jean’s fans may enjoy their renditions of, respectively, “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Do You Want to Know a Secret,” but the modernity of their vocal styles sticks out among the company they’re keeping here. The set [...]

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Mute Records) has a soundtrack that takes no melodic prisoners. Trent Reznor, in collaboration with English composer and musician Atticus Ross, comes bearing a monolithic 39-track beast. Fresh from their triumph at the Oscars (They won Best Original Score for The Social Network) they have hit the ground not running but barreling. Ross has collaborated with Reznor on past Nine Inch Nails albums and it's a fusion of dark vision. The staccato clattering machinations of "Oraculum" chime and skitter along at a frenetic pace that brings to mind OCD and the agitation brought on by any painful thought or situation you just [...]

It's telling of the love and reverence out there for this artist when you see a user comment on Itunes in Ping that reads: "I will definitely watch this movie BECAUSE of Jonsi scoring it. Curious to see the tracks in relation to each movie scene." Add to that the fact that "We Bought A Zoo" film director Cameron Crowe, a longtime fan of Sigur Rios, sought out the Icelandic band's frontmaan Jon Thor Birgisson specifically to score the film. Jonsi creates sounds to be transported by that bring a bit of otherworldliness into our own world even before you [...]

Organ trio riffs on ‘60s and ‘70s Italian soundtracks Given the obscurity of the titles, all but the most devoted Italian cineastes will have to take this trio’s word that these organ-jazz arrangements are based on movie soundtracks. Their best-known inspirations, Ennio Morricone and Piero Umiliani, are augmented by Gianni Ferrio, Piero Piccioni, Luis Bacalov and others. The selections mix breezy sounds of mid-60s la dolce vita with a good measure of early-70s exploitation cinema. Vince Abbracciante’s Hammond, Farfisa and Rhodes range from jazz cool to psych-soul heat, and the rhythm section plays with [...]
The missus has been reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for what seems like months. She's a fast reader, so she's either stuck in a loop of read and re-read, or she's sauntering through, savoring every word like amuse bouche. I guess I could always, you know? Ask? Either way, we're both beside ourselves watching this trailer for the film adaptation. Her, well, for the film adaptation . Me, for the soundtrack. Trent Reznor. Atticus Ross. Three hours of material. A Bryan Ferry cover. [...]

This is a bit dated compared to our usual music posts we share but just watched "Dear John' with its accompanying Dear John: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and really loved the story and the musical score which included 311, Joshua Radin, Fink, The Swell Season, and more...
