Yesterday. Well, to put it simply, sucked a dirty asshole. My mountain bike got stolen out of my garage and I learned that my homeowner's insurance pays a maximum of 1000 dollars on a bike (less than 1/2 of what the bike was worth). Now, I am bikeless and looking at the replacement bike being a massive downgrade from what I had. Boo-fucking-hiss. All of that was made a little more tolerable this morning though when I got to work and saw that the new Otis Gibbs album, Harder Than Hammered Hell, is now available for [...]

Per his bio, Chet comes out of New Hampshire, having traveled the country via cars, buses, vans, backs of pickups and railcars, sleeping where he could find a bed along the way and pitching a tent when he couldn't. He's backed up Bo Diddley and he wrote The Gibson Brothers' track "Ring the Bell." It's only appropriate that Otis Gibbs got to mention this album on ninebullets before I did, since he was the one that put me onto it via twitter last month. It's also appropriate that Otis turned me onto Chet's newest album, [...]

Amy Lashley got a brief mention earlier this year for her appearance on long time partner Otis Gibbs excellent Joe Hills Ashes album, this time she's front and centre on this solo release, a round dozen tracks with Gibbs handling production their team work has produced the goods once again on this fine album, encompassing a range of roots styles on this album of original music. My favourite track from the album is Homebody Blues " written as a tribute to the few folks in this world who are indeed happy with their lot [...]

Note from AIV : Otis approached me about this post and I thought it was a great idea and I hope to make it a reoccurring piece here on 9B. Hope you enjoy. As a traveling musician, I'm given countless CDs from people I meet on the road. I have no interest in being a music critic, but I try my best to listen to as many as I can. In the spirit of turning people on to good music, this is a list of three [...]

Phew! Back from SxSW and back at work. 9B as normal will resume tomorrow. I have some good videos and a few stories I'll relay over the coming week or so as well. SxSW was good. It was wise to lay off the booze this year. I had a lot more fun and feel way better in the afterglow that I did last year. Other than that it was a typical SxSW. Friends were made, friends were lost, miles were walked and shows were seen. I'd like to drop a special thank you to the guys from Two Cow Garage [...]

Hey everyone. I shove off for SxSW in a few hours and figured I'd post a new podcast before I shuttered the site for the week. Well. Kind of shuttered. I'm sure there will be scattered updates from Austin but they'll be sporadic and of questionable lucidity. If you're interested you can follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook where I am sure there will be no shortage of updates, hijinks and pictures for use as evidence. But enough about me and my travels...let's talk about the podcast. The first half of [...]

If you missed this, like I did first time around then stop and take note of this essential offering of folk from East Nashville based troubadour Otis Gibb s, the albums title is a homage to American Union activist the late Joe Hill ( history lesson ) and the album is about as authentic as American roots music gets, steeped in the tradition without letting it strangle the content the albums possess a simple and raw power which is delivered straight-up by Gibbs' parched and cracked vocal, the fella's bio makes for more than interesting reading " a man who [...]

When it came time to decide what this week's Top 5 topic was gonna be I didn't have to look any further than the front page of my favorite news sites. The topic picked itself. Protest songs. It's pretty self-explanatory. Go! Iris Dement - Wasteland of The Free : From Iris's 1996 album, The Way I Should. Otis Gibbs - The People's Day : I see hope for our country in what's happening in others lately. One day our whispers will be louder than their screams. The people's day [...]

The Tallest Man on Earth – The Wild Hunt. Download "Burden of Tomorrow" (mp3). Download "King of Spain" (mp3). The Tallest Man on Earth is the sardonic musical name of five-foot-seven-inch Kristian Matsson. He has a raspy voice, sings songs with beguiling melodies and refined lyrics, and picks and strums with verve. Both The Wind Hunt and Sometimes the Blues is Just a Passing Bird are each the most consistently relishable albums of the year. Quasi – American Gong. Download "Repulsion" (mp3). Download "Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler" (mp3). Quasi is Sam Coomey on guitars and vocals supported by Joanna [...]

Here we are at the end of another year. All things considered, it was a pretty good one. On a personal level, I came into 2010 facing some pretty freaky & scary health issues and I'm leaving more or less in tact and healthy. Both my Seminoles and my Buccaneers had positive seasons while it looks like my Lightning are gonna be in the playoff conversation all season. Musically, it was a pretty solid year too and that's what we're really here to talk about now ain't it. In preparation for this show I literally (yes, I am [...]

in my short time as a music blogger (hard to believe it's only been a few months), i've discovered that there's a certain amount of internal, unexplainable embarrassment in finding an amazing album, and then finding out it was released months ago. i mean, a guy can only be so many places at once, but still... i'm not really sure what to even say about otis gibbs' may release, joe hill's ashes ...it's that good. guitar, strings, a raspy voice, and pure songwriting at it's best. if i anticipated having time to put together a 'best albums of 20102 list (i'll [...]
