It is my turn to give my personal 10 favorite songs of all time ( Check out Part I ). I have picked songs that have stood the test of time and remained favorites of mine throughout the years. These are all classic songs that have great production, lyrics, message, replay-ability, and will sound great not just in your headphones but live as well. #10. "Swim Good" - Frank Ocean This is the most recent songs to come out to make this list and it is for good reason. Frank Ocean is [...]
Filed under: The Hit List HENRY DILTZ, AFP/Getty Images When Rhode Island's Newport Jazz Festival debuted in 1954, audience members sat in neat rows of folding chairs and applauded politely for acts like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet. Six years later, fans were so anxious to get into the festival, a riot occurred as ticket-less music lovers stormed the gates during a Ray Charles set, prompting a visit from the National Guard. The headline above couldn't get any more cool-dad if it tried – what (other than a clearance sale at a North Face store) could possibly be more "cool dad" than white-boy-soul impresario Justin Timberlake singing Otis Redding to cool-dad-overlord President Obama? The short clip is part of a much longer show highlighting Memphis soul at the White House. Timberlake hails from Memphis, as do Booker T. Jones, Mavis Staples, and, um, Ben Harper - all of whom played the special showcase. Look closely and you can even see the President do "cool dad" dance moves [...]

Otis Redding - I’ve Got Dreams To Remember

The Otis Redding album that could have been Producer David Gorman has worked a bit of sleight-of-hand in creating this what-might-have-been Stax/Volt release. By cherry-picking from Otis Redding’s catalog, Gorman’s built the most consistent studio album that Redding never released. Rather than balancing heartbreak with hip-shaking soul, Gorman’s playlist gives in only to pleading shades of blue: forlorn, yearning and desolate. Think of this as the soul music equivalent of Sinatra’s In the Wee Small Hours , Where Are You? and [...]

As one of the undisputed titans in the annals of Soul Music, Otis Redding seemingly needs no introduction. Any serious discussion of the genre he so thrillingly mastered will reflect upon the rewards to be found in his work, and that it’s never fallen out of favor is tribute to his talents. But in truth, scads of younger listeners do require some enlightenment regarding the massive achievements of the man. Lonely & Blue: The Deepest Soul of Otis Redding will serve as an exemplary primer for the uninitiated, and the thoughtful focus on the artist’s aching love balladry [...]

In the past couple of years, R&B has found itself developing a strange relationship between its cold, technological, 80s self and its soulful Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye past. That combination has led to albums from the likes of Frank Ocean and The Weeknd receiving critical and commercial success, bringing R&B back from its mid-20002s malaise and creating a path for its future. In the meantime, Arthur Ashin's Autre Ne Veut [...]

Gary Clark Jr. I love those new apps for the smartphone, especially the ones that let you listen to terrestrial radio anywhere in the world. Lately I've been digging WDST-FM, Radio Woodstock , operating out of the New York town that shares its name with the festival. WDST is one of those rare stations whose DJs will say something like "Boz Scaggs has a new album out ..." and they will actually play a song from that new Boz Scaggs album. Amazing - you don't usually hear that on [...]

One of the dirtiest music-related words of all time has to be "posthumous." Whenever we see this term attached to a press release, we are filled with equal parts optimism and pessimism. Too often, it's like seeing the glass half full, only watch it get poured out completely, realize it's actually gasoline, and then get lit on fire. It is, of course, foolish to question "WHY?!" these post-death albums come to fruition—money, duh—but somehow through all the bullshit, we still find ourselves hopeful for certain projects. Perhaps it's because the few that have worked are actually pretty damn [...]

Ah, February. The short month full of Hallmark cards, increased chocolate intake, and enough flowers and candy to make every single person gag. Yep, we definitely get doused in consumerism as February 14th approaches, but that doesn't mean that cupid's favorite month needs to be nothing but sap. We've all been to enough weddings to know that there are songs that make you warm and fuzzy, and songs that give you the cold sweats. And I'm here to offer up my takes on some of the best tracks that leave you jonesing for a make-out session. And believe [...]
Otis Redding 's Lonely & Blue: The Deepest Soul of Otis Redding could pass for a title Stax/Volt might have released in the late '60s. The look of the album reflects Stax's design themes of the era. But in fact it's a collection that never existed, until now, that homes in on one mood and one theme -heartbreaking, yearning ballads - of which Redding had many. The album will be released as a CD and blue vinyl LP on March 5, 2013, on Stax Records through Concord Music Group.

"Sittin" is a great example of the versatility Kendall Elijah showed on "The Wild" , when we first heard him. He raps and sings - more Cudi than Drake and not at all like Future, but still dope nonetheless. I love Otis Redding's "Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay," and if you do too you'll appreciate The Pyrex Kid's production here. Although where's the fucking whistle solo bros?? Looking forward to big tings from the kid Dynamite this year. via jon tanners jon tanners [...]
