As Wednesday creeps into the edges of your consciousness, it's my pleasure to again pair with two of Philly's finest -- Bruce from Some Velvet Blog & Duke from The Late Greats -- for a tag team Valentine's Day bacchanalia. There are millions and trillions of love songs out there, ranging from the sublime to the silly, from the nostalgic to the nasty. We each arbitrarily picked out ten that we liked for this holiday of cupids and red roses, and we're putting it up 2 [...]

Go here to see if your state offers them. That was a text I received from my friend recently. Intriqued, I did a quick google search, and found that in May of 2005, the City of New York's Health Dept. received an $8 Million donation of patches from Pfizer to help New Yorkers quit smoking. Clicking around a little more, and I saw news reports of the dwindling supply, with the Daily News reporting that as of June of '06, there were only 5000 [...]
This month is just flying by, isn't it? It seems like just yesterday that I had all my money in my bank account and my sanity intact. The holiday season seems to deplete those resources faster than my 6 year old nephew changes hobbies (making gift buying that much more of a nightmare. . . "Do you still like superheroes? Dinosaurs? Baseball?"). There's no question that Christmas is my favorite holiday, but there are still so many things that bother me. I'm not going to go into them here, because when it comes to [...]

Few more Xmas songs from a movie soundtrack. Spike the egg nog and dig in. Otis Reading ~ White Christmas Billy Mack ~ Christmas Is All Around Olivia Olsen ~ All I Want For Christmas Is You Buy it Other soundtracks ~ Vanilla Sky ~ Zoolander ~ Next Stop Wonderland ~ [...]

Everyone else seems to be posting up their "Best of 2006" lists, yet I prefer to wait until the year is actually over to start on that mess. Call me crazy. But as my insomnia was kicking my ass last night, I had to find something to exhaust my brain. So what did I do? I updated my holiday mix and recorded it for you all. I did one last year and used it as a place holder for this site until it was officially born, but since many of you weren't readers back then... I figured I'd [...]

I'm really glad Lush asked me to participate in this Christmasblog, because I think it's a real shame what people are listening to in those dark days at the end of the year (in the Netherlands the hideous Skyradio for example). I'll start of with my favorite soul singer who nailed some great Christmas classics. But then again, if Otis would have been singing his grocery list it would have sounded great as well… Otis Redding – Merry Christmas, Baby

Talked to Pep and Christi this morning. They said that over in Memphis they need to try a little tenderness. I think that is what we need in the whole state. The old, the young, and the confused. The black, white, brown, beige, and all the variations. The rich, the poor, and all of us in the broadening gap between the two. Bing said it a long, long time ago. Otis said it in Memphis a long time ago. TN needs to look to another african-american man from Memphis for leadership tuesday. [...]
The latest issue of The Word includes another installment of their series "12 More Songs You Have To Hear": 1. Gary Portnoy - "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" (Chosen by Bob Hardy of Franz Ferdinand , who explains, in part: "It's the theme from Cheers ! Whenever my mind is clear and I'm walking down the road in a good mood, it just comes into my head. It's my default song. Probably never fashionable and never gonna be, but it makes me [...]
Just talking over cigarettes and drinking coffee... What a powerful song . I thought to myself, if I had to rename my blog right now, I might change it to Cigarettes and Coffee, (someone beat me to it though .) Otis Redding - Cigarettes and Coffee

Happy birthday to Mr. Otis Redding , the patron saint of soulful southern gorgeousness in music (in my mind, he's the one and only). Born September 9, 1941 in Dawson, Georgia, he would have been 65 today. Redding died in a plane crash just three days after recording "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay," which would come to be likely his best-known contribution to the American musical lexicon. Do you realize that his recording career only lasted seven years? Although he grew up singing, his first professional tracks [...]

Otis Redding - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction Otis Redding makes the Rolling Stones' version sound subdued by comparison. This was the first version of "Satisfaction" that I heard, so when I finally heard the original, I was more than a little underwhelmed. It just doesn't sound right to me without the horn trills.

Yes, I am indeed capable of smiling. I just don't really like doing it in front of a camera. Read into that what you will. So I'm still frakkin' high over last night at Science Club . I'm not entirely sure how he did it, but my alter ego The Rex Monday pulled what I think was one of the strongest sets of his life out of his ass. It just...bubbled forth. And megastar DJ, rock icon, and (most importantly) my buddy Bob Mould made an appearance at my [...]
Man. Sorry about the delay in posts. There was some excitement regarding the last post (i.e. I'm gonna get married) which kept me occupied, there was a string of days with perfect weather which kept me outside and actual work began to get very busy. So, this little website got put on the backburner a bit. Sorry. I feel very bad about what I've done. I'll try to keep it up. Sometimes I

More lovers, fewer fighters â€" that’s what this poor world needs. Despite my occasionally prickly personality, my allegiances are firmly rooted in the lovers’ camp. Just ask my wife, our fifteen-year relationship has become the stuff of local legend for both its intensity and its “you make it look so easy†je ne sais quoi. There are the occasional, minor, rough patches here and there, but nothing that can’t be overcome by a pizza and comics date. (We go to a pizza place, eat pizza, and read comics.) Consequently, I find myself being asked for relationship advice fairly often. [...]
