With music blogging it's hard not to fall into a comfortable niche surrounded by like-minded bloggers who are all posting similar songs. That's why I've had a lot of fun with this Monday Mixer project. Each week, one of the blogs in the group chooses a theme and everyone has to come up with songs accordingly. This week I'm hosting and I chose "Baby Makin' Music" because I figured everyone likes to get down & dirty to different sounds and I wanted to hear what they'd choose. by Joseph: [...]

One of our favorite newer discoveries London singer Michael Kiwanuka recently cut this spare, gorgeous version of his as of yet unreleased "Home Again" in Paris a few weeks back. Kiwanuka's talent for melody and lyric writing aside (both awesome), the man's vocal quality is really really great. Withers, Otis, Marvin, Donny, those influences are all there but there's a uniqueness to his voice, an honesty of melodic communication that really separates him from most contemporary singers that cut from a similar sort of cloth. Take a listen below and let us know what you think. [...]

Funeral is the twenty-first episode of Season Two of Glee and forty-third episode overall. It will air May 17, 2011. New Directions continues to strategize their set list for Nationals with a little help from Jesse St. James (guest star Jonathan Groff ). Meanwhile, an unexpected loss rocks the world of one of McKinley's own. Rachel will be doing 'My Man,' previously sung by her idol, Barbra Streisand, in the 1968 film 'Funny Girl.' The cast will also perform [...]

Wheeeeew, big news courtesy of SPIN . A whole slew of distinguished artists will be getting together to create a tribute album for Buddy Holly . Artists contributing covers to this project include The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Julian Casablancas (of The Strokes) and....... ah hell just read the image above and you'll get a good idea of what this album is about. Honouring the late great Buddy Holly, who died at 22 in a Minnesota plane crash with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens on [...]
Last night, Canada's federal elections didn't fare too well. Despite over 61% of Canadians voting for more progressive and liberal parties and candidates, the country got stuck with a kitten-eater who has already done some incredibly terrible things to the land of Maple Syrup, Hockey and Beavers (and Neil Young). In order to help my fellow Canadians deal with these depressing results, this Top 5 will be comprised of some of the saddest songs I could find. Admittedly, I've avoided the 'usual' and more traditional suspects. I thought of just posting a [...]

In 1965, Otis Redding recorded and released his third studio album, Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul on the legendary Stax label's subsidiary Volt Records. The album is considered by fans and critics alike to be Otis' masterpiece. To me, it just may be the ultimate masterpiece of soul music, period . The album begins with "Ole Man Trouble," a cry of desperation of a man who has had one too many demons on his trail. In classic Otis Redding-style, this is a damn powerful and convincing song. He is begging for some peace [...]

As 2Pac, Eazy-E and Biggie all once said, "We live for the funk, we die for the funk". They said it best, so let's get funky! The Bar-Kays were a popular soul, R&B and funk group formed in the 19602s. These guys are arguably the toughest bass slappers in the 19602s and their always apparent horn sections has been flooding dancefloors since your parents' era. The movie Superbad unearthed some of these timeless gems to use for their soundtrack and now I fee like it's SpacePack's civil duty to bring them to your [...]

Not enough people today are aware of popular music's roots. Before computer generated, auto tuned tracks took over the radio, number 12s were sung by people with talent and charisma. Otis "The Crown Prince of Soul" Redding was one of the best. In his time, Redding's name was synonymous with rock n roll as he released hit after hit. Unfortunately Otis' life was cut short in 1967 when he died in a plane crash, he was only 26. A month later, "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" was released - it would prove to be his biggest hit would [...]
