Upon first spying the headline for this event at the Hideout, it seemed too good to be true. Tim Kinsella and whatever awesome friends he happens to be near (the loose collective known as Joan of Arc ) recently released the excellent, dronetastic Oh Brother , featuring collaborations with local Chicago improv masters like super drummer Frank Rosaly and Robert A. A. Lowe (AKA Lichens ), Hella's Zach Hill, and former Cap'n Jazz bandmate Sam Zurick (among many, many others). The Lightbox Orchestra , a whoever-seems-to-be-on-hand improvised orchestra, is led [...]

Disappears Congratulations. If you're reading this, you survived Snowpocalypse, Snowmageddon, Snomg or The Jesus Blizzard of 2011. Now that things are slowly getting back to normal, meaning frigid temperatures with minimal snow, it's time to dodge the massive piles of white stuff out on the sidewalks and see some live music. In this edition of Weekend Diversions, we talk Disappears at the Empty Bottle , Verona Red at the Subterranean , Shapers at the Hideout and much more. Let's get to it, shall [...]

I recently received Out Like Lambs debut record 'Not So Winter Waltz' in the mail and was delighted to open it and let it play on. It's got that serene movie-like quality, when everything feels hazy and romantic, and the notes just glide and the vocals come in mid-song with a haunted quality. Their intricate mulit-layered instrumentation is credited to a long list of members and contributors. You really get the sense that this is a product of a DIY community of musicians, where most everything is hand made and courtesy is their ethos (a testament to everytime [...]
I got a lovely package in the mail a little while back of the Out Like Lambs Field Recordings Vol. 1 on casette. They're only $5 and there's only 100 so get your hands on one now . If only for the creepy cat with one eye photo on the front. Seriously, it took me a while to see what it even was, and whoa.. pretty gross! But otherwise, the songs are lovely. Yes, I had to dig deep into my friends attic to find a cassette player, but it was worth it. Field Recordings is a [...]

Sometimes the scariest part of a movie is when it is dark and quiet. The same is true of music, and that is what these selections for my huge Halloween mix have in common. Liz Durrett's Outside Our Gates was my 3rd favorite album of 2008, and sometimes I think it should have been first. It has turned out to be the one I go back to the most. I also like her older albums, Husk and The Mezzanine . The title song from Husk starts out with: [...]

Out Like Lambs - Bred to Bug Here's a tender folk tune to help you wake up this Sunday morning. It's a pretty long song that slowly comes to life with soulful vocals over a growing orchestra of light acoustic sounds. But don't start making assumptions, because this song gets pretty psychedelic at times. Out Like Lambs is from Ocean Grove, New Jersey and recently recorded this tune as well as others that are posted on their Myspace . If you like folk/acoustic music than this is a band you should [...]
I love well assembled folk music, but too many bros and broettes fuck it up royally. So while Out Like Lambs , the duo of Rachel Ade and Michael Lucio Sternbach, might seem familiar, they're undeniably refreshing. My experience in New Jersey is limited mainly to Hoboken and Jersey City, which are not necessarily the most picturesque places I've seen. But I have to imagine that Out Like Lambs' home of Ocean Grove is a rather scenic, historically rich, and spiritual millieu in order to birth such gorgeous, fanciful torch ballads and dedications to nature and love. Man, I'm [...]
