Detroit based producer Matthew Smith has been kicking around in his outfit Outrageous Cherry since the early 902s. They've recorded a stack of LPs over the years, but 19992s Out There In The Dark is the one I go back to when the leaves turn and autumn sets in. A heaping platter of psych-pop, with the cold, reverby production reminiscent of The Seeds or any number of mid-sixties contemporaries from across the pond (The Eyes, The Sorrows, The Troggs, etc.). photo by Cory Mcburnett The Contrariness of the Mad Farmer by Wendell Berry I am done with apologies. If contrariness is my inheritance and destiny, so be it. If it is my mission to go in at exits and come out at entrances, so be it. I have planted by the stars in defiance of the experts, and tilled somewhat by incantation and by singing, and reaped, as I knew, by luck and Heaven's favor, in spite of the best advice. If I [...]

Wilco's Solid Sound Festival finalized its lineup and schedule for the event slated for Aug. 13-15 at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Mass. Though the fest will take place outside of Boston, the band is making sure the weekend is filled with some Chicago love. Among those included on the bill are Mavis Staples , whose upcoming album You Are Not Alone was produced by Jeff Tweedy, Wilco side projects The Autumn Defense , Pronto and The Nels Cline Singers , Deep [...]
By: Rinjo Njori For the last sixteen years, Matt Smith has been releasing records with his band Outrageous Cherry. The self titled record that started their 10 album run sounds somewhat like most of the albums out in 1994, riding the grunge wave for all it was worth. Though to be fair, the harder songs on the album had more in common with Screaming Trees ("If Someone Loves You") and mid tempo
To those who ordered the New Pornographer's latest LP, Together, with the bonus Outrageous Cherry 73 of The New Pornos covering this much overlooked Detroit, power pop band, the reactions likely spanned from "Who?" and "What?" to "Why?" The who and what you can find on your own using the modern marvel that is Google, and the why plays itself out below with Outrageous Cherry's latest offering, "Fell." Imagine, for a moment, what those Brooklyn neo-hippies and their followers would sound like if they focused more on their songcraft and less on their style, and you're awfully close to the [...]
Hunter Valentine - Stalker (mp3)* I love this! There is a severe lack of this kind of female-fronted hard rock bands. Reminds me a little of The Distillers. Hunter Valentine are an all-girl three-member Canadian rock band led by singer-guitarist Kiyomi McCloskey. Their new album Lessons From The Late Night will be released May 11th. Buy @ Amazon (only $6.99!) ****************************** ** Mountain Man - Soft Skin (mp3)* Despite the masculine name, Vermont-based Mountain Man is another all-female trio. Their [...]
After the critically acclaimed glam/psych miasma of 2009's "Universal Malcontents", and subsequent tours in Europe and the USA, Detroit's Outrageous Cherry returned to their analog cave to record Matthew Smith's latest batch of tunes. Wanting to capture the energy and vibe of their recent live performances in a semi-controllable studio environment, "Seemingly Solid Reality" was recorded on a reel-to-reel 8-track in a house in the same neighborhood, (and with the same architectural dimensions) as the old Motown studio. "Seemingly Solid Reality" will be released on June 1 on CD and LP on a red vinyl limited edition.

Matt Smith and Outrageous Cherry make crafting a top jam seem so easy: Find a hook, add hand claps, oohs and aahs, then lay down a beat and some words about a woman who's done you wrong, and top jam. Yet, if writing a pop song was so easy, then every hack with a guitar and a dream would be doing it, right? If writing a pop song was so easy, we certainly would have found the next Beatles by now, right? There's something else at work here. Smith has this way with phrasing, deftly [...]

Ultra-catchy Detroit pop that pines for '70s UK sounds This Detroit band's been kicking around since the mid-90s, minting a string of albums that span mid-60s garage, bubblegum and California pop, 60s/70s/80s British Invasion, and moody modern fuzz rock, all written thick with catchy melodic hooks. In the same way that the Flamin' Groovies expanded upon the sounds of the '60s, Outrageous Cherry expands on the same base with added waypoints that include the autumnal melancholy of Badfinger, Marmalade and The Association , the glam-cool space-age jokiness of Bowie, Jobriath, Sparks and Slade, revivalists [...]
We are happy to announce the upcoming release from Detroit indie psych rockers, Outrageous Cherry, on February 17th. "Universal Malcontents" is their ninth release, and this new set of pop songs once again showcases the band's distinctive mid-seventies sensibilities. The album is evocative of artists such as early Roxy Music, Mott the Hoople, Sparks, 10cc and Eno, and meanders [...]

Jacob Thiele , the mind behind the synthesizers of The Faint was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions for MIA . Formed in Omaha, Nebraska, The Faint create a collective blend of new wave, dance and punk melodic sensations. The quintet was once named Norman Bailer and originally involved Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst. Over the years, Connor went his own solo way and the members decided to make a few fresh musical changes including their band's name. Together The Faint have released a total of five studio albums [...]

Somewhere in a box of cassettes, next to our Pablo Honey , a Morrissey cassingle of "Tomorrow" , and Bandwagonesque , lies our cherished first Outrageous Cherry EP (on cassette as well). Lead singer and guitarist Matthew Smith has been writing garage-fuzz, power pop and psych-influenced songs for his band Outrageous Cherry for a very long time now, and we think that it's fitting that Little Steven himself put together the band's first 'best of...' collection. It's called "Wide Awake In The Spirit World" and has just [...]
There's something to be said for a band who can play super sunny power-pop, while talking about evil and destruction. You're gonna die (ooh la la la) It's kind of like that. The Detroit band Outrageous Cherry is back with...
