In this space, resident Bananafish fetishist Brandon Stosuy focuses on bands, albums, singles, and villages in Sweden that may otherwise pass by unnoticed. This installment's virtual milk crate contains Crazy Dreams Band , Svarte Greiner , and Emeralds . The last time I checked in was to list the Outsiders Best Albums of 2008 . Here we are almost a month into 2009, so onward... Crazy Dreams Band create loose, at times manic vocally [...]
New amazing video from Beirut, as you probably know already, he headed down to Mexico to record his next release, March of the Zapotec . He of course got to collaborate with local musicians, so far so good, this animation is nothing less than sublime.

I just got this and I'm loving it, it's a remix by DJ KRD, "Love Lockdown" but Merengue flavored, yummy. download
...he STILL wouldn't be as messed-up as Dan Bul l , a 22-year-old self-described autistic, whose album "Safe" is so disturbing, it makes eminem sound like Doris Day. It's a mighty impressive debut, begging comparisons to The Streets, but if ya ax me, this dude's got much better flow. The music is similarly well-crafted. It starts off fairly innocuous , with a wistful tale of summer, followed by a love song, and that's as happy as it gets - the lover spurns him, [...]

Local hip-hop band Outside are throwing a Christmas concert tonight at O'Gara's Irish Pub on Snelling Avenue in Saint Paul. The photo above was the best I could get (jacked straight from FeedBack's Facebook profile!) featuring Outside lead emcees Raps Deluxe and FeedBack ripping it on stage. The bottom line is if you're not doing anything at 9:00pm tonight, head over to O'Gara's and check out a dope show. Outside will be doing some group cuts, and Saint Paul emcee J.Loonz , recently returned from Prague, will probably be doing a couple of songs as well. [...]

In this space, resident Bananafish fetishist Brandon Stosuy focuses on bands, albums, singles, and villages in Sweden that may otherwise pass by unnoticed. This installment's virtual milk crate contains The Best Albums Of 2008 . In 2008 I spent more time listening to metal than anything else. (Note: To that top 20 I would currently find a way to squeeze in Nox Inferi's Adverse Spheres , Aura Noir's Hades Rise , and Mitochondrion's [...]

In this space, resident Bananafish fetishist Brandon Stosuy focuses on bands, albums, singles, and villages in Sweden that may otherwise pass by unnoticed. This installment's virtual milk crate contains Wavves . In the past couple of Outsiders I've focused on underground legendary figures/bands Harry Pussy and No Neck Blues Band alongside newer blood. This week I'm giving the entire spotlight to Wavves, the one-man project of 22-year-old San Diego-based Nathan Williams partly because he makes [...]

Picked up this cracking mix from ZNTN who describes it as: "My creative process is about inspiration and gathering. I'm not a musician, I don't know how to play an instrument or read music. I'm a "geek", a librarian - I've always enjoyed music and collect and read about it frenetically . I'm so obsessed by it that I try to create it - usually by mimicking artist I like - I study their patterns, how the instruments interact and I think of them as gears on a machine punching in in time of [...]

What a great concert it was! I know that because there wasn't anything to the concert other than the songs and a bunch of big screens with forgettable visuals, but the music sufficed to overcome all that. Alicia did her thing and she did it well. It sounded very much like her Unplugged. Then George came on and did some singles from his impressive catalogue. The audience didn't stop dancing and we were always gripped to his performance. I was saddened everytime he thanks people for the past 25 (or is it 27?) years. It was his farewell tour. I [...]

This Thursday is Thanksgiving Day, one of the bigger holidays here in the USA. So let's celebrate with an example of that most democratic of art forms, the song poem . Norm Burns: " Our Thanksgiving Blessings Are Great " Didn't we just do Halloween? Happy Thanksgivoween!

Johnny Marr recently began his career as a Visiting Professor to the University Of Salford's school of Media, Music And Performance by delivering an inaugural lecture that focused on the notion that the greatest music has always been created by life's outsiders, stating "nothing of any value was ever created inside the British or American music business". During the speech he named eighteen different bands or artists directly and we've put together a mix of songs from these very bands: Professor Marr's outsiders. Listen below, read the lecture HERE . In this space, resident Bananafish fetishist Brandon Stosuy focuses on bands, albums, singles, and villages in Sweden that may otherwise pass by unnoticed. This installment's virtual milk crate contains Harry Pussy . It makes sense hitting Vol. 21 of the Outsiders by going backwards in time to Harry Pussy, a band (and Bananafish staple) who influenced me (and a generation of noisemakers -- Magik Markers, Wolf Eyes, etc .) and trained my ears when I wasn't [...]

This installment's virtual milk crate contains Peter Rehberg & Dennis Cooper , Uton , and Koen Holtkamp . Peter Rehberg, who performs as Pita by his lonesome and as KTL with Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley, runs the sturdy Editions Mego. Moving between Vienna, Paris, and the UK (he was born in London), Rehberg's involved [...]

One day in the early '90s, I was looking through one-dollar records in a thrift store when I came across one called "Gay Name Game." With a song entitled "Lesbian Seagull" listed among it's contents, how could I resist? The album is a typical sensitive singer-songwriter acoustic relic of the '70s, though the out-and-proud lyrics certainly set it apart from, say, James Taylor. So imagine my surprise when in 1996, in the middle of a mainstream Hollywood film (" Beavis and Butthead Do America "), one of the characters starts singing "Lesbian Seagull." And legendary [...]

David Liebe Hart believes he was abducted by aliens, hosts a public-access TV program called "The Junior Christian Bible Story Puppet Show," draws pictures and performs music for tips on the streets of Los Angeles, and is looking for a woman. He has recorded 2 albums: the first ( Christian Hymns and Songs of Praise ) featured his religious songs from his tv show and was recorded on a tape recorder at a friend's apartment. Taken in small doses, I find the hypnotic droning songs strangely compelling. [...]

[ Guest post by misterlevitan's brother, Little Murph ] Last week I was in town visiting my older brother. He moved here 12 years ago with his Sub Pop Loser T-shirt , flannels, and ridiculous black boots just in time for his favorite band, Soundgarden , to break up. I remember him coming home for winter break that first year nearly in tears because that band had postponed their two-night-stand downtown for a week, and he had to give his tickets away. So as a Southern [...]

Regardless of what you think about Barack Obama's politics, you must admit that the man is a pop-cultural phenomenon. Has there ever been an American politician who has had so many tribute songs written for him? I've been collecting as many of them as I can find, figuring they're going to be a weird piece of history. And, believe me, it doesn't get much weirder then this one. Don't know who Buddy Lewis is, but this tune is the funniest, retarded-est bit of Barack 'n' roll I've heard thus far. Because Obama is of [...]
