O.V. Wright was a Memphis soul singer whose gospel roots influenced his records. That's How Strong My Love Is was originally written by Roosevelt Jamison. There is a story of Mr. Jamison bringing a demo of the song sung by Wright being rejected by Stax. Otis's version of this song is epic, I love this version for how stripped down it is.

Journeyman and soul man, Rawls is back with another finely crafted collection.
Since the beginning of Bob Dylan's imprint on popular culture his material has had the rare ability to transcend race, space and time. While you may have a number of these covers scattered throughout your collection, there is no denying Ace Records did a commendable job last year gathering up and framing twenty Dylan tracks [...]
Before I even did a mix dedicated to delta blues , I was determined to do a mix of vintage soul. At the time I was obsessed with the Numero Group 's Eccentric Soul series (I still am), and it the first pass I took at doing a soul mix was too single-sourced to merit posting. My knowledge of soul is ever expanding from a number of sources - hip-hop samples , Mississippi Records' tape series , and good old self-motivated research - so it was just a matter of time [...]

I will admit that I saw this release on the stellar Ghost Capital blog (which is one you had better keep your eye on) due to the fact that Sun Araw "borrowed" from this cover. Anyways, O.V. Wright sounds like Otis Redding, but possibly even better. Check out this song, and good luck getting this record! Feel free to make a donation to his memorial fund here and check out some more tunes. O.V. Wright - The Bottom Line

Wild Weekend , take 12. Like some ancient Greek oracle, the ghost in the iPod has spoken again. And once more it prophesied a musical six pack with a little something for everyone. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Btw: despite his lousy musical examples, I kinda agree with this guy that iTunes and iPods have changed the way one listens to music, and that these new technologies have even diluted the act of listening in a way. And we´re off to a furious start with some early [...]

*Artwork by Rodrigo Izolag What's really good, soul babies? Peace and infinite blessings to all the good people in the place to be... 'Tis the season when most of you are tryin' to ho ho ho and pull your merry shit together, so it's probably not the best time to trouble you with an abundance of scholarly discourse... Recently, I've been contemplating whether or not all the writing I've done has ultimately been to my detriment anyway. I mean, let's be real~ the [...]

O.V. Wright : You´re Gonna Make Me Cry [ purchase ] "Love is something... it´s hard to figure out, but love is something the whole round world wanna know about..." Granted, not exactly lyrics to win a poetry prize with. But just do yourself a favour and check out the dynamite vocals on this ´65 gem. Overton Vertis could sing the [...]

O.V. Wright - I´d Rather Be Blind, Crippled And Crazy ( buy ) If you´re in the mood for some hot southern soul, look no further than Overton Vertis Wright. In tonight´s featured song - produced by the great Willie Mitchell - O.V. is telling himself he won´t fall for the same woman a second time. No sir. He´d "rather be blind, crippled and crazy, somewhere pushing up daisies", than to let her break his heart all over again... That´s what I call a statement.

O.V. Wright - "Ace of Spades" I forget when I lost perspective on the situation. I mean, you never really remember that, right? If you did, you would have known it was happening. It's like a magic trick, the trick of it is usually at the beginning and you spend the whole time waiting for the trick to happen, and then when all of a sudden it's happened you're surprised. That's the way I felt, I woke up and it was like I was living with a stranger. It was like a stranger was in my kitchen, [...]

Because playing these albums in flagrante delicto is the only romantic gesture lamer than offering a woman a fish sandwich. 10. Cornball Stevie Wonder Songs (I.E. "You are the Sunshine of My Life." "I Just Called to Say I Love You") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =uPyq4iqt6Go I'm not going to tell you that these songs don't serve a purpose-they do: father-daughter dances at Bat-Mitzvah's, weddings between accountants and interpreted with polyester flair by Marty and Elayne [...]

:: Fed Up with the Blues :: Here we have a song sung by deeply unappreciated soul artist, O.V. Wright. It’s the b-side to one of his biggest hit singles, “Eight Men, Four Women,†released on Don Robey’s Backbeat Records in 1967. Overton Vertis Wright had been singing gospel professionally since the age of six, and by his teens he’d made a couple of records with gospel group, The Sunset
