Now that we have our host issues situated, we can get back to business! Christmas comes early this year as this is easily one of the largest release weeks of the year. There isn't one overall album I can recommend, but there are many that stand out for me. Rilo Kiley's Under the Blacklight and The New Pornographers' Challengers would be two high-profile albums that I would instantly pick up. I've heard mixed reviews on Rilo Kiley's major label debut, but i've listened to Challengers [...]

One might think Over The Rhine are from Germany or have a penchant for Wagnerian vocals. Neither are true. What are they then? A husband/wife duo from Ohio that make gorgeous music. I suppose if you had to apply a genre to their style, it would be folk-pop-rock-alt-country-Amer icana-soul or something like that. At times Karin Bergquist voice reminds me of Feist. But without the French sounding production. Their new album, which drops on August 21st, is called The Trumpet Child. Eleven tightly written songs that should help than grow their fan base. The music meanders from [...]

Certain sounds just warm your heart, no matter what the occasion. You know the CDs you reach for on Sunday mornings or while you cook dinner with the late day sun beaming through your windows? Well for me, one of those artists is Over the Rhine . This Midwestern act delivers quality roots music that is as warming as that first cup of coffee and just as eye opening. Their new LP - The Trumpet Child - is a somber journey, but one that sounds absolutely fantastic. The record opens with a simple brass [...]

The blogsphere might not think so, but there are other females out there who haven’t played with Broken Social Scene. I’m not hating on Feist; just trying to turn y’all onto to some other femmes that have released tracks this year. Every once awhile an album can conjure up a film in your mind's eye. Over The Rhine , a duo from Ohio have a new album called The Trumpet Child out in August and it's the soundtrack for movie the Coen Brothers should start shooting right now. Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler kick off with a thirties brass section, declaring that "I don't waste your time with music you don't need". Wonderfully arranged the songs are linked together like a songbook dreamed up by a songwriters team with F. Scott Fitzgerald and Randy Newman [...]

When the sun shouts and people abound One thinks there were the ages of stone and the age of bronze And the iron age; iron the unstable metal; Steel made of iron, unstable as his mother; the tow- ered-up cities Will be stains of rust on mounds of plaster. Roots will not pierce the heaps for a time, kind rains will cure them, Then nothing will remain of the iron age And all these people [...]

One of the most criminally underrated bands on the planet, Over the Rhine have announced a large fall tour and released a single that is rapidly burning up my most played list in iTunes. The song, Entertaining Thoughts , is a wonderful polished bit of folk-rock that is neither too to be polarizing nor too pop-produced to be unappealing. It will undoubtedly make an awesome to any summer mix, good for a drive. It's sort of like a Wallflowers track only it doesn't suck (Hey-oh!) I could listen to Karen sing all day. [...]

When it comes to Cincinnati musicians, no matter where you fall, you have to appreciate Over The Rhine . Karen and Linford Detweiller are the constants of the band and are preparing to release their 9th proper full length, The Trumpet Child , later this summer on August 21st on the bands own label, Great Speckled Dog. The band will also be previewing the entire new album on July 8th, this weekend for their fans, more information here..... Here is a new song from the album for you to [...]

Over The Rhine ( here , here , here ) is a core artist for Songs:Illinois. The band's Midwestern roots, consistent quality of their somber brand of roots music, and the close relationship between the married members of the band (a duo really) all combine to make them one of my favorite acts. They sound a bit like The Cowboy Junkies if they'd clung to their Trinity Session's roots. The band is back with a new record and while the song "Trouble" has been making the rounds on a [...]

THIS WEEK'S FINDS June 24-30 "Kidstuff" - Tenderhooks This song wallops me with its late-'70s new wave vibe but I can't put my finger exactly on why. Put early Elvis Costello, the 1977-79 Kinks, Television, and the Undertones in a blender and this song maybe pours out, with its ringing guitar line, observational wordplay, and solid pop melody. The production quality has a strong whiff of past glory about it thanks to those driving dual guitars and the enveloping rhythm section but again the sensation is vague rather than specific. The closest [...]

My internet has been kinda sketchy this entire week so I want to apologize for having the Daily Graboid up so late. It'd kinda odd because there are some points where the internet is fully functional as I can chat on instant messenger, but I can't view any websites. Very odd though, and it's pissing me off more than anything. I think one thing i'd like to to improve with this features is extending it to releases outside of the US. It kinda seems like overload though so i've alway decided to not try it. [...]

Six, or seven, weeks to go until the music starts at SXSW (March 14th), I won't be there, but I guarantee you that the buzz that'll build in the indie music community will be like a pot of strong coffee to me. Last year SXSW had a massive amount of music and the same will be true this year. You may already know that the festival for the past couple of years has hosted hundreds and hundreds of mp3s of bands that were showcaseds at Austin, although this year's showcase mp3s aren't online yet, last years are still [...]

I felt a little guilty about yesterday's acknowledgement of the Devil, so I decided to dedicate today's playlist to...angels! I love the thought of angels-how they get to fly around and protect us all day and sing beautiful songs and sprinkle magical lovedust in our hair. What could be better? So this one goes out to you, angels! Thanks for being awesome! What are your favorite angel songs? As Ever, Kate Kiefer President, PELA (Paste Employees who Love Angels) 1. Cowboy Junkies [...]
