The sweaty brilliance of A. Tom Collins A commenter on my recent post Hey Kids, Grow a Pair: How Music Blogs Neutered Indie Rock asked me to share what's going on in the Denver music scene people should know about. So I have composed a small list. Keep in mind, this list is by no means comprehensive, it’s just a small sampling of the bands I think are doing something interesting right now. I’ve chosen only to include bands who are currently living and working in Denver and not bands from [...]
A chat with the metalcore four-stringer kicks off our new column on bassists.
Once upon a time in a land far, far away, there was some shit. All that the shit wanted in life was to be among the Shit That Comes Out Today. But this shit had very conservative parents with reservations about his dream. And after Mama Dookie and Papa Stink didn't budge, the shit plopped back [...]

I suppose you could call Don't Wait Animate (a.k.a. "DWA") a trip hop or dubstep band, but since I generally hate those genres-and I really enjoyed their latest EP, Overcast Up Concrete Down, I'm not going to classify them as anything other than Indie. The 5-member band from England sounds a little bit like Bloc Party used to (when BP was still good), but without the punky edge. Maybe if Bloc Party covered Unkle. Or were produced by Four Tet. The vocals and music combine with a sense of urgency and danger-desperate passion. These [...]

Shadows Fall's Paul Romanko: Still without a side project of his own. So two of the three current Shadows Fall-related side projects both released new music yesterday, and despite the fact that it is not particularly fair to either band, I am lumping these two projects into one post for the sake of my own [...]
"Somebody get me a goddman second band!!!" Paul Romanko is now the only member of Shadows Fall who doesn't have a side project - or, if he does, he's hasn't gone public with it yet. What's that about? I'm sure he has no recollection of this whatsoever, but back in my lowly fanboy days, before [...]
Back in 2008, legendary metalcore pioneers Overcast - who went on to be in a couple fo smaller bands you may have heard of, like Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage - got back together to re-record some old tunes for a collection called Reborn to Kill Again. When that album was released, I interviewed vocalist [...]
