Overman are four dudes from Illinois. Overman say that they "understand [Berkeley Place's] contributions to the collective music scene and thus the emotional state of the world." And I can't tell if they're being sarcastic or honest. Overman sound like southern rock with an acoustic, soft-ish side-like music you'd hear in a Dead show parking lot or a college dorm. Overman's music, however, is unmistakably honest. Overman should appeal to you if you like Dave Bromberg, Drive-By Truckers, John Prine, Ryan Adams, old fashioned rock and roll, or well-crafted [...]
Out of the Chicago area comes Overman, whose props-to-Darwin song "Evolution Rocks" has the endorsement of the National Science Teachers Association and has been used as a teaching supplement in classrooms. The song is somewhere near the They Might Be Giants ballpark, with a bit of an added-jam band feel. The band members share a five-bedroom farmhouse in Joliet, Illinois, and sound a bit zany,

Believing that good bands function as families, Overman's constituent members: Aaron Kelly (vocals, bass), Matthew Radowski (vocals, rhythm guitar), Russell Eggenberger (vocals, lead guitar) and Jason Burley (drums) share an address in Joliet, Illinois, a five-bedroom farmhouse that serves as an ideal cauldron for the simmering brew of the band's creative process and experimentation. Their common dwelling enables both an intimate connection between bandmates and around-the-clock collaboration, operating as ground zero as the band has grown, since its formation in 2003, from a local barroom favorite to a regular on Chicago's live music scene. Overman's latest [...]

Charles Darwin gets his due Overman is a four-piece from the Chicago area who blend 70s country and southern rock with the funky feel of Primus and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The lead track of their latest release, The Evolution EP , is bound to raise the ire of Pastafarians and certain fundamentalist Christians with its ode to Charles Darwin. Those raised in front of 1970s Saturday morning cartoons will dream that "Evolution Rocks" gets its own Schoolhouse Rocks -styled animation. The song has already [...]

I made a promise to myself that this year I would try to keep on top of my mailbox and post new music in a timelier manner. Well, you can see how that's going. I really need to dedicate one post a week to whatever's in my mailbox, that way it's out there and fresh, rather than gathering dust like a souvenir from a Grand Canyon trip three years ago. As usual, the mailbox dump yields a large variety of music. My pick of the litter is "Youth Against the Empire" from King of Conspiracy, a neo-punk [...]

When I first heard the Chicago area indie rock/pop band Overman, I thought about Phish and how they might have started out. Overman seem to have that eternal youthful exuberance and enthusiasm (and plain old fun), keeping a sense of humor while touching on more serious and sometimes dark issues. Like Phish, they seem to have an openness and an unmediated atmosphere about them, as though they weren't taking themselves too seriously. But checking their gig schedule (past, present and future) and browsing through their personal blogs made me feel they may be more serious about it than [...]

Overman is a local Chicagoish band who really deserves some airplay and some attention. I say Chicagoish since they live in Joliet, about 45 miles Southwest of my great city. They do play here, I just missed a series of gigs they had at the Elbo Room, dang it! And Matt, their spokesman, tells me: We have one Chicago show coming up though, we are helping St. John's Episcopal Church at 3857 N. Kostner Ave. celebrate 'Darwin Day', and have a small set including our hit 'Evolution Rocks' prepared. It is open to the public, but will [...]

I believe this is a first for us here at Bona Fide Darling: hosting a song endorsed by The National Science Teachers Association. I honestly never knew they were in the business of endorsing anything--who knew? Apparently the song is also used in classrooms to teach the little children all the wonders of evolution. I received this song in my inbox last week from a Chicago band called Overman. I gave it a spin and I dug the School House Rocks! vibe of the song. Their [...]
