For the last 20 years, the good folks of Noise Pop have turned a single show at Kennel Club (now known as The Independent) into a huge, weeklong festival that causes Bay Area music nerds to clear their calendar every year. In recent years, the fest has expanded beyond music- we have movies, craft fairs, [...]

Mixtape: Twenty Years of Noise Pop (Podcast #269) In February, the Noise Pop Music Festival turns twenty by gathering over one hundred local and touring bands from across the indie spectrum for a week of exciting concerts all over the City. I might just have a Jandek-ian mystery on my hands here. In the mail I received a CD-R -- FROM BRAZIL!!!! AWESOME!!!! -- with elaborate hand-made art and a cute little comic about a deserted island pasted-on. Next to the comic is writing in pen: "PD #001." Obviously this is a new record-label venture, but what do the "P" and the "D" stand for? On the back of the CD sleeve are two words. At first, I thought the two words were "Saturday Giant," and there is, indeed, a band called The Saturday Giant [...]

L to R: Charlie Watts, Mick the Taylor, Mick the Jagger, Keef, Bill Wyman Rolling Stones - Sway Released April 23, 1971 on Sticky Fingers [ purchase vintage LP ] My reimmersion into The Rolling Stones' back catalog has again ignited my obsession with "Sway," my favorite Stones song. It's nearly perfect, even without much input from Keith Richards. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways: Memorable riff. [...]

Power Pop : Not just an under-appreciated music genre, but the style that made up much of our college radio playlists. In the 1970s it was Big Star who pioneered the sound by combining the melody and harmony of the Beatles with the immediacy of The Who. Cheap Trick was perhaps its best proponent in the next decade, the 1980s. The below bands, most notably the Posies and Teenage Fanclub... "No. More. Room. On. The Bus. Bus left town, we’re rolling out! Don't need you!" -- Tom, closing the doors on the non-believers "Like The Black Lips enough to play something on Vice Records. That's a testament to how good The Black Lips are." -- Tom, supporting the band irregardless of their coke fiend employers "I appreciate you saying that, but it ain't no mystery why you’re an EMT, not a doctor." -- Tom on EMT Ryan blaming his severe pain on excessive rocking out "Go to [...]

For the first time in a long time, I watched a newly purchased dvd within six months of purchase! And I'm glad I did. Short Cuts is incredible, and as a big fan of Carver and Altman, I can't believe it took me so long to get to it. It felt even more expansive than Nashville, but also more focused; instead of so many intersecting lives, Short Cuts is truly so many intersecting stories, and it really moves. The extras on disc two look great, we'll see if I get to them in the [...]
