just a quick one...a few weeks ago i posted a little blurb about oweihops (michael metivier) from massachusetts. i noted that i wanted to offer a track for download but couldn't find the gentleman's email address. fortunately for you, he found mine and gave the go ahead. not fortunately for you, the oweihops project is on the shelf for the time being, but don't fret...michael is working on a few other things that i hope to hear more about in the near future... download // oweihops [...]

A couple of top mixtapes have surfaced in the last couple of days. Marcy over at Lost In Your Inbox has a Best-Of-2010-So- Far mixtape up and it's been a fantastic way to pass this gloomy grey afternoon. As she says, it's all about the flow. Best of all, I now have a swag of new stuff to go hunt down. Broken Social Scene, for instance, are a band I've not paid much attention to, despite the reverential treatment they get in the blog world, but 'All To All' grabbed my attention immediately. You'll [...]

(image via thecannon.ca ) Remember a couple of weeks ago when I posted the gorgeous 'Sailor', by Canada's The Gertrudes teaming up with PS I Love You? Go ahead and download it now , I'll wait. It's great, right? Well I've tracked down a few more tracks by The Gertrudes (they're a 12-piece, would you believe) and I'm particularly taken by 'Turn Out The Lights (The River Song)'. Lovely haunting harmonies, plenty of banjo – subtle banjo, not over-the-top Deliverance banjo – and some well placed trumpet action. After a few listens [...]

Hun album Beacons is [...]

Despite what you think, instead of this being a sparkling review of a great micro brew, it is in fact a stunning review of the best folk coming out of North East USA. I have been holding onto reviewing this album and as you can see by the post title, I must have been struggling with that part as well. The only reason the title works (for me at least) is knowing that Oweihops likes him some great micro brew. I know this because I (more or less) know Oweihops and consider him a friend of mine (hell, [...]

I'm oddly conflicted today. It's my last day at a job that treated me well, but one I'm quite ready to leave for a better opportunity. Amongst the slog of loose ends, superficial farewells and genuine goodbyes is a realization that the last three and half years have shown life change for me in ways that I could have never expected. Marriage. Kids. Our first home. Promotions. Getting older. Slowing down . These might not seem like the most romantic or exciting changes to undergo and more often than not they are lumped in with the [...]

From the title of this post you would think introductions are in order. Well my good readers, in fact they are! Introductions for both the writer as well as the main focus of this post – the fantastic talent that is Oweihops. What? Oweihops? ...but wait, let's not get ahead of ourselves; let's start at the beginning. Hello readers of You Crazy Dreamers! I am a newest resident of this great blog and I am starting my "YCD" life right now with this, my very first post. Some may know of me (no, seriously, who am I?) [...]

Well, it's the second of our Best-of lists. This one is for the top EPs of the year. Now before you get all in our mush about your favorite EPs not being here, we didn't claim to be the defacto experts. It's simply the ten EPs we liked the most this year. To add that personal touch, we got people to answer some simple questions about their year. Not everyone got back to us yet, so we will probably update this as more answers trickle in. 10.) hey congrats to all you bosox fans out there. i, like the rest of the country probably, didnt think they were going to make it out of the alcs, but what the hell do i know? i expected my sox to have won at least 2-3 world series by now. considering that they have the same freakin team as 05! anyway, those rookies really carried em, which bodes well for the future. could it be possible that arod might be a sock next summer now that he has opted out of his contract with the yanks? man, i would love [...]

Earlier in the year, I stumbled upon some great new artists courtesy of the Yerbird folk compilation . One of those artists was Oweihops – or to simplify the situation, the songwriting of Michael Metivier. I was blown away with his track, Sad Little Drunks , so when his 5-song EP Cinquefoil showed up in my mailbox, I was chomping at the bit to give it a listen. As Shane mentioned earlier, in today's highly consumable music environment, putting too many tracks into the mix is pointless. That's why Metivier's decision to [...]

i don't usually go for transparent post titles but since the latest issue from yerbird (home to next week's gig of choice in london) has such a great name, not to mention fantastic artwork too, well, why fight it. (head over to salvage to read the beautiful quote from the inlay.) pulling together the most interesting of the increasingly internet active new folk types, yerbird lynchpin, morgan has an ear for a storyteller in song. and what shouts loudly from this gently rousing intelligent collection of songs is [...]

Yerbird is the little label that could. They are about to release J Tillman's new record, and as a nice amuse bouche , they have compiled a collection of amazing folk artists called Folk Music for the End of the World . The record is a nice mix of big hitters and relatively unknown artists, but the talent is pretty consistent throughout. From the slow burning Alina Simone track - Gunshots - to the end of the world anthem by Hezekiah Jones - Mississippi Sea [...]
