It comes as total coincidence that, on the same day the whole bladdy internet was getting its collective knickers in a twist over a band that redefine extreme fandom, we skipped the country to go and see a band definitely worth staying up all night for. A tipsy January eve's Ryan Air browsing brought to light that we could head to Eindhoven for a meagre price and catch not only The National , but Buke & Gass , Sharon Van Etten , Owen Pallett , Efterklang and more besides at Holland's travelling [...]

It's been over two months since I had the time to properly turn my attention to writing about music, or felt the need to. I've been busy, to put it bluntly. I have a job I like, at a great company, and one that allows for certain amazing things to happen from time to time, as I will describe here, soon enough. But anyway, enough of that, and less of that other stuff, and more talk of music. There are less songs here than in previous years, which I think means I wasn't all that impressed with 2010. [...]
Tweet We'll be offering our Noise Pop picks over the next several days. Then, as the festival proceeds, our writers and photographers will be reporting back from a whole bunch of Noise Pop events. Looking forward to something in particular? Let us know in the comments. Cafe Du Nord hosts a mostly Merge Records showcase on Wednesday night (8pm, $15), with resurgent indie pop pioneers Versus [...]
Owen Pallett will be on the stage of the Café de la Danse (Paris) tomorrow night and we're giving away 2 tickets to attend the showr! Talentuous arranger, he worked with Arcade Fire, Beirut or Grizzly Bear and distinguished himself with his minimalist and bombastic style. His incredible voice carries the hearer to a top of loops and samples of violin and keyboard. These 2 tickets are waiting for you, try your luck!

Ruth and I were back on Fresh Air Radio last night, but due to all sorts of massively annoying database problems with the site, I couldn't put up one of those live playlist updatey things like I usually do, which was really kind of frustrating. After spending last term more or less missing one another every single show I must confess I am looking forward to getting things right in 2011 and the chance to spend an hour and a half every week bickering with the old trout about music. So given you had [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Chromewaves Like Owen Pallett , Joel Plaskett and Jill Barber , songbird Basia Bulat has discovered the magic of performing with a philharmonic orchestra. But whatever you do, don't try to suggest to the Toronto singer-songwriter -- who, earlier this week, received her first Juno nomination in the Best New Artist category -- that she's part of a trend. So it's February, the Midwest just had a snowpocalypse, and I'm sure New York is due for another one sometime soon. I decided to throw together a quick mix of songs to get you through those long nights spent in a tauntaun or if you live on the west coast, I don't know, a mix for your morning sunblock application? Click here to download Citizen Mix Vol. III - Feb. 2011 Tracklist: 1. [...]

Filed under: News , Awards Holmes Creative Communications The Juno Awards were once something of an embarrassment to Canadians, a pale imitation of the glamorous Grammys that helped feed the northern nation's inferiority complex. Though its intentions to celebrate Canadian music were good, the records that were rewarded often weren't. But as the Junos prepare to stage their 40th award show, the 2011 nominees list proves how much times have changed. [...]
The Juno Awards are the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys, only Arcade Fire nominations are more an expectation than a surprise. This year, Win Butler and co. are up for four awards, including Album of the Year, Group of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year. Canada's other indie powerhouse, Broken Social Scene, scored nominations for Group of the Year, Alternative Album of the Year, and Music Video of the Year. Rapper Drake is also a big winner, as he netted nominations for Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the [...]

The Luyas popped up on my radar while I was trying to figure out what happened to Owen Pallett (aka Final Fantasy). The Canadian outfit formed back in 2006, and are set to release their second full-length, Too Beautiful to Work , on Dead Oceans on February 22nd. The album features guest spots from Pallett (hence the connection) as well as The Arcade Fire's Sarah Neufeld, and the album's title track does a great job of balancing light and airy with seriously complex. The major components-the repetitive keyboard melody and the staccato [...]

Editor's Note: The 2010 music scene was actually one of my favorites in a long time. While some saw a slow year with nothing eventful happening, I saw a hip-hop artist reveal himself as a human (K. West), an Icelandic superstar create something magical on his own (Jonsi), and a band that reached the highest of expectations (Arcade Fire), plus a plethora of Bay Area bands that expanded the scene's already blooming hype machine (Weekend, Judgement Day, Grand Lake, Morning Benders, Sean Hayes, Sonny & The Sunsets, Il Gato, Sleepy Sun, The Limousines, etc). [...]

jmonae.com Back in mid-December , I pointed out that the website for the 2011 edition of Canadian Musicfest had gone live with the first batch of showcasing artists for the festival. And while there was enough in that initial list to get my attention, in the last couple of weeks the information available has really ramped up and, methinks, another round-up of acts who will be filling Toronto clubs from March 9 to 13 is in order. Perhaps most exciting is the return of cyber-soul firecracker Janelle Monáe , though if [...]

The Luyas aren't as unknown as you would suspect. Although the band's name is unfamiliar, two out of the four Montreal members were/are affiliated with the Arcade Fire. They include: former multi-instrumentalist, Pietro Amato, and current violinist, Sarah Neufeld. On their second full-length album, Too Beautiful to Work (2.22.11), the group enlisted fellow Arcade Fire member, Owen Pallett, to create the string arrangements. Pallett has recently supplied his talents to multiple projects including Arcade Fire's The Suburbs , The Mountain Goat's The LIfe of the World to Come; as well as scoring Richard Kelly's film, [...]
